interesting how all of the spells that the knight usues are somewhat tied to anger and revenge. vengeful spirit, howling wraiths -> abyss shriek. this pattern is somewhat broken by desolate dive but that one is about lonlines and desperation and the visuals still convey agression pretty well. interesting how all the base spells belonged to snail shamans, who were outcasts, lots of implications here. the spells were taken by the one being that cannot convey emotions in any way. the knight twisted howling wraiths into a shriek which could symbolize its own anger. much to think about

I too think about this often , but to elaborate on the Knight's spells:

It is, in a way, inheriting an almost lost culture, and later on adding its own essence to transform it into something new all their own.

This transformation is also fueled by death wish (could even say regret) (vengeance, freedom, being heard)

Now, you know what else is white and related with soul, a past heritage, that is transformed by strong emotions into something new entirely its own, that is black and related to void?

Hollow Knight's message is that all things must accept an end, but the other side of that coin is that the world continues to exist through the new generations transforming the old into something new and better.

Now to go even deeper on the analysis:

Vengeful spirit (haunting specter that returns from the dead to right the wrongs)(ghost getting out of the abyss and returning to hallownest)-> shade soul (that's what shades are essentially aren't they? Both in the traditional meaning of soul and in that void is the essence that animates vessels in place of soul (life force))

Desolate dive (lonely fall)(end of the birthplace)-> descending dark (all the shades return to the abyss)(embrace the void also kinda but not counting)

Howling wraiths (also restless spirits but this time wailing, maybe calling out? complaining? all the shades in the abyss)-> abyss shriek (more openly about the shades and the abyss itself calling out, allowing itself to have a voice)

Kingsoul (at this point the knight is the new king, and kind of implied almost equal to the pale king (who could not stop the radiance); kingsoul represents all vessels, with soul of root and wyrm, perhaps you are now as good as a vessel (was expected to) be, perhaps you're as ready as the chosen vessel was)-> voidheart (your true nature surfaces, unconstrained, shedding the constraints of the expectation of your parents, of being a vessel, transformed, evolved beyond the old king, above wyrm, transcending the chosen vessel, unifying and directing all your lost siblings, all these restless spirits now under your command)

I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

I had seen the first picture of the church, but not the second.

I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.

This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.

They were all children, injured, abused, and killed in my country’s attempt to erase them. I want the world to see this and hold the state accountable to *active* reconciliation> I mean we could at least truly adopt UNDRIP in action instead of words for god’s sake.
