there’s something melancholic about how much time caster cu just spent waiting. odin approached him in fuyuki like “shit’s fucked I know I don’t really go here but I need your help specifically” and he became a caster and then he waited in the burning ruins for however long it took for chaldea to arrive so he could help them on their way. after that he went to the british lostbelt, long before lostbelts were even on the menu, and waited in the ruined snowed-over belltower of orkney for however long it took for chaldea to arrive. years of just preparing and waiting when normally he was always the one who stepped in and handled it. first obtaining knowledge of the disaster odin foresaw and then of the previous life odin lived as tonelico’s ally, becoming something that has strayed just far enough from being cu chulainn that he prefers to go by grimr instead now and only uses the name cu chulainn to identify himself to chaldea as the same person who helped them before.

cu chulainn is only ever himself but that self was not meant for a life of patiently waiting, he’s still himself but also a self that he never became, an old man who died before he grew old patiently waiting in a land that lived for 14000 years after it died. this too a passing fantasy anchored by a promise made to a fellow teenager knee deep in corpses with the world on their shoulders. i like that in fuyuki it was cu chulainn who was chaldea’s first ally because once long ago when he was their age he also awoke to find his peers dead and himself the only one left who could do something and that in avalon le fae he is grimr instead because the lost children have become battle hardened heroes and there is no need for cu chulainn to take to the field. like the nameless warrior who did not come with when he avenged the boy troops. i like that caster cu chulainn wishes he were his heroic lancer self but grimr is fine with how he is now, not someone his younger self wanted to be but still someone he can be proud to be.

arknights has more successfully captured what "a playable servant" would feel like than any official type-moon game so far, is the thing

servants have quantifiable stats but while those do play Some role in servant vs servant combat they're basically irrelevant once the noble phantasms come into play, because servants by definition all have at least one super special trick that breaks the established rules for what is possible to happen. battles in fate are not about running the numbers they are about strategic use of your special bullshit trick and exploiting loopholes in the opponent's special bullshit trick. it's alllll about finding and creating the conditions under which your special trick can break the rules the most.

fgo does not do this. the vast majority of fgo servants don't have a special trick at all, they have buffs and debuffs and damage. very rarely they make something that manipulates the mechanics directly a little like BB summer card lock but categorically they make each kit by simply checking some boxes on the list of things that can happen in the game. the extella games gave every servant's noble phantasm and abilities the exact same effect of "damage" with only the animations being different. the extra games did put a lot of emphasis on information over raw numbers so they got closest to capturing the nature of servant vs servant combat imo but they still didn't really dabble into manipulating what is game-mechanically possible to happen. they stick to the rules. they preserve "balance'.

but servants are not balanced. servants are completely defined by the fact that they each have their own unique gamebreaking trick. just like 6* operators.

6* operators have quantifiable stats. they do this or that type of damage. they have this or that amount of offensive and defensive numbers. but more importantly, they also all do some bullshit that redefines what is or is not allowed to happen on the field. and the bosses all have their own special bullshit tricks that control what happens on the field, and you win by exploiting the loopholes in those tricks with your own tricks. and sometimes that trick is in fact just overwhelming firepower. THAT'S servant on servant combat.

I’m sorry Orpheus i was too harsh on you…

i was in the physics lab today and we were working with lasers, so the Lab Freaks (legal name) were being very careful to stress that we Do Not Turn Around or Look Behind Us because we’ll get extremely blinded by the power of high strength lasers

and i’m not gonna lie it was actually extremely hard to resist turning around. i misjudged orpheus it turns out this isnt extremely easy actually

purpleisdebeste

okay i’ll be honest i 100% looked back at the lasers. actually multiple separate lasers multiple different times. they were pretty

and i didnt get blinded. so clearly lab safety isnt real and you should always risk it cus taking risks is awesome #gambling

but uh. my ass is NOT making it out of the underworld 🔥🔥🔥

there was this "best written mobile game" poll on twitter recently and while the results are obviously just a matter of present-day popularity rather than actual literary merit so idc about the outcome, it really cannot be overstated how much every single one of those games owe their inclusion in such a poll to fate/grand order. a poll like this wouldn't even exist without fate/grand order. fate/grand order is the reason mobile games developed confidence as a storytelling medium in the first place. I personally wouldn't even vote fate/grand order as the best written mobile game anymore because I think it overstayed its welcome but it cannot be overstated how much fate/grand order's success shaped the mobile game market into one where the game's writing is being considered at all.

i love normal cu alter moments like nero bride telling him he's overdoing it with his spiky look and him replying "I know, but give me a break, I'm holding back as much as I can" or when you fight him at the end of the chapter and break bars hadn't been invented yet so you just have to fight him four arrows in a row as he keeps switching to later ascensions and finally summons demon god halphas into his body because he's not done fighting yet or his fgo mats offhandedly mentioning that he throws gae bolg with all his power and no hesitation so hard that it destroys his body in the process but he immediately heals himself with runes which though resulting in net zero damage does come with excruciating pain and he does this every extra attack or when he got possessed by one of draco's incarnadines but it failed to fully possess him before he sealed it within his body with a method that requires scathach to continuously kill him until a better solution is found and he's fully conscious the whole time and like, having a conversation with her while she's repeatedly painting the white house with his guts. why did the demon thing happen twice i love it here
