Continuing the trend of lists, here's one for users' races and ages. Post in this thread with your races/ethnicities (you can be included in more than one) and/or age group and I'll add you to the list.

Races/Ethnicities:

  • Asian
  • Black
  • Latino
  • Middle Eastern
  • Native American
  • Pacific Islander
  • White

Ages:

  • 14 and younger
  • 15-17
  • 18-20
  • 21 and older

Here's the list.

Credit for this list partially goes to TripleA9000, who wanted me to make a list based around race and/or ethnicity. I added age on just because I'm a curious person.

A few times concerns were brought up over the multiple things I've done involving gathering information from KYM and its users. So, here are my guarantees.

What It Says On The Box: What I say is what will be done. The information provided for the birthday list goes on the birthday list, and I won't put it anywhere else. Of course, I can't guarantee that everyone else will do the same. Remember, you are making the information public.

Others Above Myself: I will never use any data I collect to benefit myself at the expense of others. For example, I will not use the data to shame, dox, embarrass, or otherwise hurt others in such a manner.

Individual Privacy Is Important: In some cases, it's obvious that the information you provide will be made public (e.g. the Birthday List). In other cases, however, I will strive to make sure that the information is anonymous. Should you make it clear who you are regardless, public releases will have it censored slightly.

Note: I am not good with describing or naming races and ethnicities. I sought the help of others, and spent a lot of time trying to get things alright, so please forgive me if I used the wrong name somewhere, or it's not clear what each one is, or I didn't include X category.

I have a bit of a question before I post on this thread. I still am a bit of a private person, but does it still count if I can just post hints on what race and age I am? Like if I want to say i'm a polar bear, it could basically mean I could be white.

If I'm able to figure out what it means, so can anyone else. And they wouldn't have to – it'd be in the publicly viewable list.

So, either post your race(s) and/or age, or don't. You'll get the same result beating around the bush as if you just said it.

For such surveys, how you categorize your responses to items could be based on how you want to present/use the data, on previous surveys that are highly regarded (e.g., US Census or other large surveys), or both.

Generally, it's more useful if you can get ratio-level data (i.e., numbers with a true zero, for example, me being 28-years old is ratio-level), because you can always make that into interval (where there is no "zero" such as age groups, but the intervals in between responses are equivalent,) or ordinal (where there are just groups that have a defined order from least to greatest but don't necessarily have a meaning beyond that (such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, xth).

You can always let people define their ethnicity/race how they see fit, and then find themes in the qualitative data to create groups based on what patterns you see (or, again, use previously used surveys and questionnaires and take cues from their items.) But sometimes, people like to be deconstructionist and give you a practical "N/A" answer.

All things you've considered, I'm sure. But what can I say: I like survey methodology.

The U.S. Census was the base for the categories in this. Past that, it was primarily attempting to strike a balance between more detail than just the 3 or 4 races, and not being so diverse that it's confusing for people to pick which category they go into (still had that issue – bit of discussion about if Filipinos are Pacific Islanders).

If I was going for something useful or in-depth, I would've gone with what you said in the second two paragraphs – user picks ethnicity/race and no "groups" of ages. However, I'm currently working on something else (hopefully will be done in a month) so I wasn't looking for that. This was more just a simple and easy thing for fun. It also helps us form mental images of other users – I've found a number of my assumptions about other users were wrong already.

I can tell you do like it, and I appreciate the tips. If you don't mind, maybe I can ask you for some tips next time I have something more sophisticated planned. Might help me, since despite liking these, I am by no means an expert.

bit of discussion about if Filipinos are Pacific Islanders

For the record, Filipinos are Politically Asians, but from an Anthropological perspective, can be debated as Pacific Islanders. I think the same can be said about Indonesian users here.

I withheld answering because I was unsure between Asian and Pacific Islander. But now that it's brought up:
Filipino (with white blood)
20

Also if this is about forming images of users outside their AVs, I found JFF's Camwhore threads to be quite informative. It's daunting though, as not a lot of users would feel safe posting an irl pic of themselves online. A survey like this would have more users participating.
