Raging X (あばれてみた, Abarete Mita) is a series of videos featuring dancing animated characters accompanied by the Touhou Project remix track "Night of Nights" by COOL&CREATE artist BEATMARIO. Along with the Tamifluriver Sisters series, the videos are often named using the phrasal template “X on Drugs” on the video sharing websites Nico Nico Douga (NND) as well as on YouTube.

Origin

On January 24th, 2009, NND^[1] user Zeno (是乃) uploaded the first instance which featured Reimu Hakurei, the main character from the Touhou Project series, performing an energetic dance to the track “Night of Nights.”Its complete version^[2] uploaded on March 17, 2009 received over 330,000 views and a YouTube version accumulated over 155,000 views in less than three years.

Spread

On February 1st, 2009, a video titled "Marisa brawler" (あばれまりさ) was uploaded to NND^[3] with a black-and-white animation of Marisa Kirisama, a boss in the second Touhou game, dancing to "Night of Nights". On February 9th, a video titled "feeling Reborn Vongola raging chaos" (【手書きリボーン】あばれぼんごれ【カオス気味】), with several dancing Vongola bosses from the Japanese manga series Reborn!, was uploaded to NND which may have inspired the phrasal template "Raging X" (あばれ〇〇).

Among those instances, the most popular subject for mimicking among NND users is "Marisa on Drugs" (よせあばれまりさ), the complete version of "Marisa brawler" which borrowed many movements from other dance memes such as Geddan, Caramelldansen, Danjo, smooooch ・∀・, etc… This video was uploaded to NND on July 5th, 2009.^[4] NND users has been practicing the style of this video not only in hand-drawn animations but also in Miku Miku Dance (MMD) CGI characters.

And because this video above was reprinted to YouTube on the same day, the series made its way to that video sharing service. As of February 2012, there are over 100 versions of the series on NND.^[5]
