Snail Eating a Cucumber refers to an image of a mollusk ingesting a cucumber that has inspired myriad photoshops as well as a series of remixes in which the image is shown while "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 plays in the background.

Origin

On October 2nd, 2016, Redditor Phasechange^[1] submitted the photo (shown below) in /r/photoshopbattles, gaining over 18,000 points and inspiring dozens of photoshops of the image.

Spread

In the ensuing thread, multiple users posted photoshops of the snail. Popular examples include a post by criticalg^[2] that gained over 5,400 points (shown below, left) and a post by Elelegante^[3] that gained over 1,100 points (shown below, right).

On January 2nd, 2018, iFunny user Culs posted a video showing the original image of a snail eating a cucumber slowly panning to the left while I Want You Back by the Jackson 5 plays in the background. The post received over 23,200 smiles on the platform in two years (shown below).^[4] On November 19th, 2018, YouTuber Locarpus reposted the video to the platform, where it gained over 10,000 views.

Throughout 2018 and 2019, remixes of the video and posts referencing the original meme grew popular on iFunny. For example, a November 16th, 2018, post by iFunny^[6] user slymeboy received over 9,800 smiles in one year (shown below). A January 9th, 2019, post by iFunny^[7] user ZacTheFirst received over 2,300 smiles in one year (shown below, right).

In early July 2019, the meme spread to on Instagram, later also reaching YouTube. On July 9th, Instagram user watashii.if posted a remix video that gained over 1,600 views in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). On July 10th, Jaycoda jr. posted a video variation that gained over 670 views in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
