“Your government won’t last that long” - smiling Võ Thi Thang says to US-backed regime judge in response to 20 year prison sentence
For those like me who are curious:
- she only served 6 years before being released
- 2 years after that she saw the unification of Vietnam, the thing she was fighting for
- she served in elected office for 20 years and was the Director General of the Tourism Administration until she retired in 2007. She was also the Chairwoman of the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Association and was beloved in Cuba as well.
- This picture is quite famous in Vietnam as a symbol of women who fought in the resistance and young people’s courage and determination.
Here she is on (I think) the day she was released
Here she is in 2003
Some interesting articles I found about this:
A profile on her by a Vietnamese magazine
An obituary from when she passed in 2014
(Note: I am an American who fell down a research rabbit hole. I used sources I could find in English but I would love to know more/be corrected by someone who is Vietnamese and has more insight and can actually read more of the many sources available online)
(guy who is wearing all yellow voice) Boy i sure hope no one looks at me in a noticeable way
like can we be serious for a moment please. Use our brain
How’s Curious George doing btw
hey. That was devastating
here are pictures of the shawls I’ve knit for my mom for her birthday, because I never posted them here and I told @disgruntled-lifeform that I would share! I’m gonna link to my ravelry project page for each shawl if anyone is interested in yarn info and etc
2020: Syyslaulu
this was the first shawl so I don’t have better pictures
2021: Wild Swan
this shawl killed me. I died making it. it was great 10/10 experience
2022: Water
I think this is my least favorite one and I didn’t like working on it very much but I do like the lil waves
2023: Midlothian
I looooved making this one and I love this designer (Dee O’Keefe) and due to a miscalculation in my math, this shawl turned out huge and mom loved it
2024: Mayapple
I don’t have any good pictures of this one so here’s the blocking mat picture. also a Dee O’Keefe design! her patterns are just so nice. this one was interesting because it was a standard semi-circle that started at the center of the straight edge, but once I got to the section after the triangular slices, I had to turn the shawl sideways and work down the half-circle edge for the rest of it. funky!
hated working with this yarn btw. tencel blend yarn, my beloathed. it’s pretty, though
2025: Adelita
back at it again with another Dee O’Keefe shawl. this one was fairly straightforward but really nice and I love how light and airy the yarn looks!
aaaand now I have to hurry up and find another shawl pattern to make for this year. usually I’ve got it figured out by now, so I gotta hurry
Ooooh such shawl envy 🤩🤩🤩
How about this shawl I tried and failed to complete?
serial-unaliver-deactivated2024:
it’s kind of crazy climate change has occurred at such a remarkable pace that I and everyone else around my age can remember a completely different climate in our childhoods. I truly watched winter gradually disappear in my life.
“You’re too young to remember this, but there used to be so many insects outside that you would have to clean them off the windshield after a long car ride” is the kind of sentence that would have been in a cheesy scifi short story earlier in my life, perhaps submitted to a literary magazine and accepted to show support for its environmentalist message - now it’s something I’ve said in earnest.
Local man chooses to stand by principles, much to his chagrin.
Is one of my favorite character types. Yes, he is going to be idealistic, and righteous, and virtuous and it’s going to make things so much harder for him and he knows this dang well and he hates it.
hello, yes, this is my id speaking, do you have any recommendations along these lines
The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells
“Witch King” and “Queen Demon” by Martha Wells
The Tyrant Philosophers series by Adrian Tchaikovsky
“Digger”, by Ursula Vernon, if “good man” is broad enough to include “good wombat”
Carol Sturka and Manousos Oviedo of the TV show Pluribus.
I’m gonna use blaze to force people to look at my cat, because she is adorable.
Her name is Hestia.
men can go to the restroom while women must go to the shadows of contemplation
unfortunately very true. Doing Better does not always mean never being upset or never being triggered or never having trouble. often Doing Better means experiencing those things and being able to keep going/cope healthily/move on. if you’re in a bubble with no sensation, if you’re numbing yourself out, that’s not what recovering really is. it won’t help you have a happier life it’ll just make your world smaller and smaller until you can’t fit anywhere anymore. gotta learn to make peace with the hard stuff too, that’s the only way to keep going
spock’s room decor is actually fucking bonkers. The weapons??? the big red velvet curtain??? like ok phantom of the opera go crazy.
for reference jim’s room has some photos and a plant so we can surmise this is uniquely a spock being a dramatic weirdo thing
You are judging Spock’s room through human associations tastes. Remember, Vulcan blood is green and the planet Vulcan is red (Discovery even adds to this by showing red trees around Sarek’s property).
On Vulcan, red is the color of nature, so (assuming Vulcans even assign meaning to colors), red is likely a very calm and soothing color choice. Green is probably the Vulcan color of passion and/or danger.
From a Vulcan perspective, Spock’s room is a cozy cottage core with some historical knickknacks hung around.
Kirk’s green carpet, green plants, green lighting room is the Vulcan equivalent of a boudoir at best or blood-stained slaughterhouse at worst.
so what you’re saying is Vulcan children’s hospitals-
