places to read the railway series (and some other ttte related works)... FOR FREE!

so, I'm not sure if everyone on TTTE tumblr has gotten a chance to read the RWS, so I thought I'd post some links! Note that for some of these you'll need an Internet Archive account to check out the books as it's a virtual library. It's worth it, though! They have a LOT of books!

Internet archive 60th anniversary story collection - Only goes up to "The Twin Engines" but I do like that it contains the forewords. However, I believe those can be found on the TTTE wiki, so you may not find them necessary.

Internet archive Thomas the Tank Engine - the complete collection - All W. Awdry books in one!

All Christopher Awdry railway series books - This one's a pdf.

Internet archive The Island of Sodor, Its People, History and Railways - A non-picture book lore source that's rare to find physically. Also a pdf!

And, as a bonus...

Ongoing archive of Marvel Thomas magazines - This one's being run by @/KingoftheTWR on Twitter. I like reading these, they have quite a few original stories and I am especially fond of the "Write to: The Fat Controller" section! I suggest sorting them by name that way you can start at issue one and not have to run around the archive whenever some of them were uploaded out of order.

[Sprites by Cj-the-Creator, Princess-Muffins, and Myself] James brought his final coal delivery into Vicarstown Station for the staff to use before bringing the rest into the yard for the town proper. As he waited, the stationmaster informed him that he wouldn't be able to return to Tidmouth before the next morning. James was distraught at the idea of spending Christmas night alone in Vicarstown's Shed. Once the stationmaster left, Rebecca set about attempting to lift James's spirits by reminding him that he'd managed to bring a coal train in despite the bad weather, and how much good that'd do for Vicarstown's residents - especially with worse weather on the way. Though that helped a little, James was still miserable about being alone on Christmas night. That was, until Rebecca revealed that he wouldn't be - Rebecca was spending the night there as well. As it turned out, her last stop had been Vicarstown. As it turned out, neither one would have to be alone on Christmas.ALT

Ever the Optimist

[1976]

James huffed into the big station with his last delivery of coal. To say he was relieved would be a tremendous understatement. Though he was doing better with coal trains, that didn’t mean he enjoyed taking them.

“Oh, god, thank you, James.” Sighed the stationmaster. “Had me worried there for a while.”

“Mm.” The red engine grunted. “We only just made it through the cutting near Ballahoo Junction. Ghh, the snow there was somethin’ else.”

“I’ll have the lads bring the barrows up shortly, so we can put this coal to use. In the meantime, you can have the sheds in the yard.”

James paused.

“I’m actually staying the night in Tidmouth. Y’know, with the rest of us main-liners?”

The stationmaster shuffled awkwardly.

“Right… about that.” He adjusted his scarf. “That won’t be happening. The snow’s only gotten worse since you left. Apparently we’re expecting another blizzard, and with how much snow’s already fallen…” He trailed off.

“Oh, don’t be ridiculous!” James snapped. “I made it here, didn’t I?”

“Yes, but can you make it home through snow twice as bad as what you fought on the way here?”

“…I’ll be running light engine…?”

The stationmaster eyed him skeptically.

“Sir Topham Hatt ordered that all non-essential services be postponed until the weather clears, and given that your train here was the last one…”

James growled.

“Not only do I have to run stupid coal trains all day, now I have to sit in a shed alone on Christmas night?!”

“Sorry, James,” the stationmaster shrugged, “there’s nothing more for it, I’m afraid.”

He walked away, down the station stairs.

“It’s amazing that you were able to bring all those trucks in with the weather as bad as it is.” Rebecca smiled.

James gave a tired sigh. A few months ago, he’d have seethed at Rebecca’s relentless optimism. Now, however, he couldn’t help but be impressed by it.

“Even in conditions like this, you’re still impossibly cheerful.” He mused.

Rebecca chuckled softly.

“You got the supplies the town here needs, and just in time before another snowstorm hits. With luck, the lorries will be able to deliver it to the houses in time once you get it to the yards.”

James’s smile fell.

“And I’ll have to spend the night alone in a cold, dilapidated shed.”

“You won’t be alone.”

James looked up, surprised.

“What?”

“Yeah, this was my last stop.” She motioned to the coaches behind her, which James could see were empty. “I was given the same warning half an hour ago that you just got.”

“You were okay with being alone on Christmas night?”

Rebecca gave a warm smile.

“Well, my passengers won’t be alone tonight. They all got home safely. My crew said they’d share a hotel room, so that’s everyone accounted for.”

James blinked.

“What about you, though?”

“Oh, I could survive one night alone in a shed. But hey! Now I don’t have to.”

She smiled warmly at him again.

“Because you’re here.”

James blinked.

Ever the optimist.

“Y’know…” he said, his voice cracking just a little, “I think I’m finally starting to understand you.”

I was in the mood for something cutesy… I think Sir SDW would love to experience what it’s like to be able to go fast… saying as he can’t fly nor drive or anything 😭 he probably would look at how others would race each other or try to see how high they can fly or how deep they can dive… and think about what it would feel like, but alas… he’ll have to settle with just running around
