Every time someone talks about how it’s ’realistic’ to have homophobia in their fantasy world, I think about Yuri on Ice.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s an ice skating anime that blew everyone’s minds in 2016 by NOT queerbaiting. The main queer couple had kissed on the mouth, on international TV. It was legit. But after that happened, delighted as I was, I was afraid of the backlash against them in the next episode.

The whole series had an attention to realism. A lot of the characters were references to real life figure skaters. The real life architecture of one of the skating rinks was a consideration at a certain plot point. So obviously, I assumed, there would be controversy about these two well known athletes kissing on live TV, especially with the next competition they were going to being in Russia. I was bracing for it.

And then they got to Russia, and nothing happened. There was no fallout, no backlash. The main couple was fully in their honeymoon phase with zero concern. No one was angry or disgusted about the kiss! No one seemed to think that much about it at all!

And then I realized that this world doesn’t have homophobia. They had an absurd amount of detail and real life references to things, but we’re just not going to do homophobia! We’re also totally cool with men being feminine and experimenting with gender expression, because both of the main characters do it and no one bats an eye, including the edgy little teenager who loooves to talk shit about them. If he doesn’t have an issue with Victor exploring his femininity or Yuuri playing the part of a woman in the story he’s telling on the ice, then no one does!

It’s your story! Even if it’s grounded in realism, you can choose if you want to engage with that stuff or not! That’s not to say it’s bad if you want to do so, but the idea that your story is unrealistic or missing something if you don’t feature people being treated like shit for being who they are is, frankly, bullshit! Your queer story doesn’t have to be about homophobia!
