I have to imagine that Luther also disappeared during the six months Ethan was on the run in Rogue Nation and was hacking the CIA to feed him information. But also like... Luther going back to his old hacking ways just for the fun of it. The whole hacker community was in an uproar about the return of Phineas Freak, the Net Ranger himself. People message him asking where he's been and Luther is like "met this idiot that dragged me all over the world and I couldn't say no to him, but he's gone now" and everyone thinks Luther has gone through some crazy relationship drama that ended in death or divorce. Six months later, there is another message on a forum that just says, "bye everyone, my idiot resurfaced in Morocco, guess I can't be a criminal anymore" and the website crashes with all the theory posts.
