She/her. Call me Latte. No it’s not after the drink. Yes I know it’s confusing.

I love… Murderbot… I love that Murderbot is sex-repulsed and romance-repulsed and the narrative respects that as a valid way to be. The other characters even respect that as a valid way to be! That almost never happens! Usually in media it’s portrayed as a lie to cover up the character’s real desires, or they get over their trauma/hangups and realize they really DO need 💕love💕… but in The Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot never does. It’s allowed to be a full person with many, complex, nuanced relationships that are crucially important to it without having to prove its personhood or prove the relationships’ importance by making it romantic. And I love it for that.

Murderbot, with a hacked governor module, about to leap into mortal danger to protect a group of people who didn't ask for its help and don't even like it that much: damn I can't believe I'm being forced to protect my clients :/

every time dukat shows up on this show he’s invented a new job for himself. first it was cardassian commander, then he dabbled as a space pirate for a bit, then he tried dominion lapdog. now he’s club president of a cult. by this time next week i expect he’ll be dropshipping 3D printed trinkets on etsy

Charles sending crystal a dick pic on Snapchat captioned - you like my 👀🍆💦❓- and Crystal responds with what dick? And he goes and sobs to Edwin about it thinking she's calling his dick small but no Crystal opened it and all that he sent her was a couch and empty space

and fuck if you think about it, the writers do to Julian the character exactly what Jules' parents did to their "disappointing" child. they didn't like the way he was unfolding — so they reached in and reconstructed him.

The writers took the naive, fantasy-enamored lover boy developed over several seasons and retroactively remade that character into a facade. A mask. A shell into which the new, "true" Julian takes root.

And like Jules' parents, who eradicated the child they couldn't see any potential in, the writers don't seem to have thought through all the repercussions of their meddling.

Julian was never actually the naive young dreamer that is the foundation of how other characters + we the audience understand him; he fabricated the starry-eyed doctor (insensitively) enamored with "Frontier Medicine" to conceal the Truth, which is lies and shame; he got as far from earth as possible not for the thrill of it, but out of the terror of being Found Out.

He doesn't enjoy conversing with the station's resident Exiled Spy because Garak's his foil, someone exciting because of how unalike they are; he loves Garak because here is someone who knows what it is to be built of lies. When Julian is with Garak, he's not the only one constantly deceiving everyone, not allowing anyone to get too close. In mutual acceptance that they will never know the full truth about one another, each paradoxically ends up knowing the other better than anybody else ever will.

Nor does Julian play secret agent in the Holosuites so he can fantasize himself completely different — he's tapping into what he sees as his true self, escaping to a reality where dealing in secret identities makes you a hero, not a liar. He gets to be who he is — a genius of deception — where that's a good thing. Where he doesn't have to be afraid that friends who find out will be disgusted, betrayed.

Both Julian's parents and Julian's writers doom him to ceaseless stress and stigma. Even when his deepest fears come true, even when Everyone Knows — and it is, miraculously, okay — they've opened him to exploitation by those who'd use his powers for further subterfuge.

Does Julian ever get to just Be Himself? Or has he been rewritten, reshaped by forces beyond his control, too many times?

I still desperately want a Star Trek episode where the A plot is a Borg attack and the B plot involves Tribbles and the crew ends up solving two problems at once by beaming the Tribbles onto the Borg cube, disabling that cube long enough for them to get away because the Tribbles reproduce faster than the Borg can assimilate them.

tuvok and his thing with neelix when he hates him but craves his presence whenever in altered states of conciousness (brain damage, you could argue tuvix) is so funny bc it's world's first case of a man fighting to supress his urges towards another man where the urges are fully platonic. tuvok tossing and turning at night not willing to face himself and admit neelix would make a delightful friend

Charles licks blood off his teeth.

He doesn’t mind when people call him Edwin’s guard dog. Rather likes it, actually. Not that he’d say that out loud. Sounds weird.

He’d always wished he could have a guard dog, a smart German Shepherd who listened to him and only him and would stand between him and - and, like, muggers, or Stranger Danger, on just a whispered word of command; or a tough street dog that he rescued and who loved him and only him and would throw their life in front of his just because they loved him, rip out the throat of - of anybody who wanted to hurt him.

But he’d always kinda wanted to be the guard dog, too. To stand in front of his mom or his sister and bare his teeth and growl so deep it hit primal fear instincts, made the hairs in the back of - of bad guys’ necks stand up. To be able and allowed to rip out - someone’s throat because they dared to try to hurt someone under his fucking guard.

It’s a noble and ancient profession, being a guard dog.

He doesn’t like being called Edwin’s “attack dog” quite as much, but -

He spits out the blood he’s licked off his teeth, someone else’s blood, the blood of someone who was fucking stupid enough to try to hurt Edwin, Edwin who was under his fucking guard, and grins wide and red. There’s a fine line between being a guard dog and being an attack dog, and maybe it’s okay if other people get confused sometimes.
