heres my challenge to everyone for next month, for black history month. any time you want to draw inspiration from art, like poetry, music etc, pick a black artist. web weave with langston hughes and james baldwin and jamaica kinkaid and hanif abdurraqib and derek walcott and set your edits to meghan thee stallion and beyoncé and eartha kitt and coltrane and invoke basquiat in your art and it can be fanworks or original stuff and importantly, it doesnt have to be about race. obviously be cognizant of the context of the art youre using because a lot of the artists i mention specifically create art about racism but like. take your white doomed yaoi ship and make a webweave to poem by langston hughes. set an edit to body by meghan thee stallion. engage with black art in all contexts.

I hate politics, why are they allowed to write bills for people to vote on that are like “save the puppies from the wood chipper and also allow eight year olds to work in coal mines” like why are those two grouped together like that

which is why single-subject rules are so important in constitutional law
bills that cover multiple topics (omnibus for example) or bills that contain riders unrelated to the subject of the legislation are inherently un-democratic because the vast majority of people will not comb through any law no matter how complex, but lawmakers have a duty to understand what they’re voting on and riders and their ilk impede that responsibility
when riders are allowed it becomes very easy to pass unfavorable legislation if the main subject is widely supports (payments to disabled veterans 👍+ cutting food stamps for needy families 👎) so if a lawmaker doesn’t like the rider and votes no they can be perceived as also disliking the unrelated matter in the bill (I vote no to not cut food stamps ≠ I hate disabled vets)
In the United States 43/50 state constitutions require single-subject legislation (with some exceptions for appropriation bills), but the federal government has no such rule
I’m no legal expert but I image the only way to establish such a rule would be via a constitutional amendment (stupidly difficult by design) and even if it was simpler, such as via the normal bill legislation process, in a municipality that has no such rule you can imagine any number of unfavorable riders would be added in order to prevent such a rule from becoming law
which is why political literacy and media literacy go hand in hand because the media will unintentionally (or intentionally) report on the bill with its primary topic and not include whatever unrelated legislation was attached to it simply to keep the news story palatable to the average consumer
so yeah the long and short of it is politics dumb and also evil
