King's Guide to Referencing

Quick start guide

For smaller projects with only a handful of citations, you can use this quick start guide.

In-text citations

  1. Use the URL, ISBN, DOI, PMID or arXiv ID of the resource you're citing and ZoteroBib finds the information for you.
  2. Select the style you need (see Which style should I use?)
  3. Click on the icon to create an in-text citation.

If you have any questions about using ZoteroBib check their FAQs page.

Bibliographies and reference lists

  1. Use the URL, ISBN, DOI, PMID or arXiv ID of the resource you're citing and ZoteroBib finds the information for you.
  2. Select the style you need (see Which style should I use?)
  3. Click on the icon to copy the item information for a bibliography or reference list. Or, add all items then click the Copy to Clipboard button to copy the entire list.

Which style should I use?

Check with your tutors and departments if you aren't sure which referencing style you're expected to use.

There are four main styles in use at King's:

  • Our Author-Date style is APA 7th
  • Our Footnotes style is Chicago 17th
  • Our Numbered style is Vancouver

We also have a Footnotes style specifically for Law:

  • Our Footnotes style for Law is OSCOLA 4th

AI and Referencing

King's has produced new student guidance on the use of generative AI tools. Students are not expected to reference generative AI but are expected to acknowledge its use through a statement. Please see the central Student Guidance for details.
