From Immersive VR to a Safer OR
Every year, approximately 4,000 preventable surgical errors put patients in the U.S at risk. A startup company affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is using immersive virtual reality (VR) training simulations of operating rooms and other high-stakes settings to improve teamwork, curb physician and nurse burnout, and keep patients safer.

Dr. Francesca Tripodi, associate professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) and principal investigator with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP), is co-leading a $225,000 (£171,000) UK-US project alongside Dr. Patrick Gildersleeve and Dr. Brett Zehner at the University of Exeter.
