who is beryl, and why do i care?

The short answer is that Beryl is a character with powers that tell her how best to communicate with other people, and she uses them for things like this:

Beryl: Reckon your dad would be proud? There’s people watching. Bloody stand up.

(It was what he needed to hear! I’m serious.)

But, uh. Beryl is part of the extended Batfam cast, a member of Batman Inc. who, over twenty years of irregular appearances, has accumulated a backstory I think is really, really interesting. She is a (British) Robin who saves her (British) Batman from the fog of grief and self-destructive ruin, only to later watch him die in front of her. She’s a teenage girl who takes on her mentor’s mantle at what has to be a terrifyingly young age, and becomes a mentor and leader of other vigilantes in turn. She’s a fixer, a deeply compassionate person who cares about other people, but also isn’t afraid to tell you off when she thinks you deserve it. She is magnificent and I love her dearly.
