Alternatively, if you like what I do and you’d just like to support me, here’s my ko-fi!
I absolutely love the genre of images that’s like. A picture of a duck with the caption “he’s never had to respond to an email”. Because it just makes me think of higher beings sharing pictures of humans with each other with captions like “he’s never had to absorb a host of malignant entities to uphold balance 😔😔” or “he’s never had to answer the endless call of the Dark Eye”
A commission of Fae Nightmare, for a lovely commissioner who wishes to remain anonymoose. Something of a sequel/prequel to this previous piece. Time shenanigans, how exciting!
(On a side note, thank you to everyone who sent me kind messages during my …….. lengthy hiatus. Consider this my unofficial return to posting!!)

Nightmare stared into the fire.
The room around him was warm. Given the size of his bedroom’s ornate fireplace, it was perhaps one of the warmest rooms in the entire Winter castle. Every now and then a log would crackle and snap, a tongue of flame would rise higher than the rest - for a moment, firelight would glance back and forth off the glassy angles of the carved obsidian walls, orange and yellow light ricocheting around the room in a magnificent lightshow.
Nightmare paid it absolutely no mind. He was accustomed to it. His mind was elsewhere.
A book laid open, abandoned, in his lap. There were only two sounds in that room - the crackling of the fire, and just underneath, the howling blizzard winds beating against the castle walls outside.
…
He closed the book. He couldn’t bring himself to pretend to read it anymore. It wasn’t as if he’d been paying attention to it, anyway. He couldn’t even recall its title.
All he could think about was the person who had last read it.
Nightmare’s good eye twitched. The memory was fresh, and raw, and he couldn’t stand it. He stood swiftly out of his chair, crossing the room to the dark oak bookcase standing against the far wall. His dark cloak, as dark as the inky volcanic glass his castle was made of - and the bottoms of his grand wings - dragged along the carpeted stone floor.
He returned the book to the shelf, silver rings glinting in the firelight. His eye roamed over the other spines. Colours and embossed lettering he had long memorised and grown bored of… he didn’t need a good book, he didn’t even need a mediocre book. He just needed anything that would fill the silence.
The horrible, horrible silence.
imagine waiting eight months on a waitlist to see a specialist doc only for the ‘appointment’ to be them giving you 1 phone call to say “haha sorry dude we have no idea whats wrong with you ✌️ anyway take painkilers i guess? byeee”. incredible. this is the future. i truly love living in the 21st century
Holdon is that me

i think the reason "fiction affects reality" trips so many people up is because they think it means "engaging with media that depicts uncomfortable subjects will taint your soul" when really all it means is that "fiction is meant to reflect certain ideas of the world intentionally or not, and it's going affect your perception of it, if you don't go in with a healthy bit of skepticism"
like playing a first person shooter isn't going to turn you into a school shooter, but that doesn't mean that Call of Duty isn't like. explicitly military propaganda.
or (for a more specific but also weirdly common example) enjoying horror movies isn't going to turn you into a serial killer, but if you watch a lot of horror where the killer is "a gender confused man who kills women whilel dressed in drag, because his repressed female split personality hates his attraction to women because it gives her gender dysphoria" than you should like. be a bit criticial of what you're enjoying. or something like that.
But at the end of it, the point shouldn't be "certain kinds of stories should not be enjoyed by anyone bc they will warp you" and more like "please use your brain sometimes when watching/reading/playing things because every single story has messages in it about important ideas"
Even if sometimes the message is "the author/artist etc put zero thought into this idea bc it's something people make blind assumptions about"
I don't even think you Must Perform Criticism Of Thing Or It's Bad And You're Bad
Just like, have thoughts idk, be curious about what things mean, have that be something that matters to you sometimes
The other thing which I think is a crucial foundation to all of this is "We don't all have to agree on everything."
I think a lot of people get all het up about "problematic media" because they think that it is trying to get them to agree with something, and they only know how to Blindly Go Along With It or Wholly Reject It. Sitting in the middle, then (e.g. having thought experiments or hearing someone out even if you don't agree with them) is not only uncomfortable but suspect -- because in their minds, that's a slippery slope to Accepting the thing!! Why are you doing that! Hearing someone out is dangerous! You might get trapped into being Persuaded! Aaaaaaaa!!!!!!
In actuality, the first part of being able to do critical thinking is to be able to have the following conversation:
Person A: Here are some of my thoughts. [presents thoughts]
Person B: [listens] ok, thanks for sharing. is that it?
Person A: that's it
Person B: cool [goes back to what they were doing]
Why is that important? Because then it shows you are confident in your ability to listen without having your identity destroyed by everything you hear. Once you have a firm grasp of what your convictions are, and you trust yourself to behave in accordance with those convictions, then the world is your oyster.
We don't all have to agree. We don't all have to have the same thoughts about all the same things. We are not a hive mind or a cult. Stop trying to do cult thinking. We don't all have to agree. Not all media is trying brainwash you or force you to agree to its a worldview. Most of it is just inviting you into a conversation and offering to present some thoughts to you.
You don't have to agree; you are an equal participant in the conversation it's trying to have with you.
Thank you so much for all the lovely Happy Birthday messages, everyone. I know it might seem like I’ve died but I’m just having a rough year, I’m very much still alive & alarmingly obsessed with handsome fictional monsters. Thank you for the well wishes - and hopefully you’ll all see me Behaving Foolishly On My Blog again very soon!!!
