fragmentedstarlight asked:

Hello! Sorry to bother but you mentioned pokemon soup? 👀 If you happen to find or have the recipe could I request you to share?

corollarytower answered:

(this is stolen wholesale from a post I saw last year. It’s trying to recreate the soup Brock serves at the start of the first Pokemon movie. My comments in parentheses)

Pokemon soup

¾ lb bacon, beef or chicken or a meat of your choice

1 medium onion, diced.

2-4 cloves Garlic minced (I use about a tablespoon of the pre-diced stuff)

¾ lb carrot, cleaned, peeled and diced.

3 sticks of celery, washed and diced.

2 lbs potatoes. Washed, peeled diced in quarters.

1 head of broccoli.

8 cups of stock of your preference. I recommend using the bones of the beef or chicken, but veggies stock works too for a vegetarian or vegan version.

3 tablespoons all purpose flour.

1 cup whole milk. (can substitute plant based milks)

½ cup heavy cream.

Salt and black pepper to taste.

½ teaspoon paprika, use the spicy one to get the warmth up a notch in winter.

1 tablespoon fresh chopped coriander. Optional. 1 cup diced gouda or manchego cheese. (Optional) Make sure you have all your ingredients ready and at hand for this one to make sure it comes out nice and tasty!!! In a pot put water and the bones to prepare your stock You can use premade or bouillon cubes, just make sure its 8 cups worth of broth. In a different pot boil the potatoes until soft. In a big pot put some butter or olive oil to fry the onion, when it turns a little transparent add the garlic, move constantly. Add the celery and diced carrots, moving constantly. (You can add some finely cut cilantro at this step. I think it adds a lot) The carrot will get a little brighter in color, add the diced meat. Salt and pepper to your taste. Meanwhile, blend the potatoes with enough stock so your blender wont have trouble blending. (If you don’t wanna, you can just mash the potatoes or use instant mashed potatoes to save some time) Add the remaining stock to your big pot with the veggies and meat, add the broccoli chopped in bite size pieces. Add the paprika and taste for salt and pepper. Let over a medium fire for 10 min. Separate 3 tbsp of the stock to mix with the flour, set aside. This will be a thickening agent. Pour the potato mix on the big pot, move to integrate and taste for salt and pepper. Add the milk and heavy cream. Move with a laddle. Have a final taste and let over low fire for 5 min. Serve hot and decorate with a pinch of coriander and some cubes of cheese. (This soup is excellent with some toasted French or Italian bread)

Ok I tried this and it was a HUGE hit!

Main recommendations: Season the dough AND season the filling. Also, make smaller loafs, about the size of a spatula head, for easy flipping!

Here’s how they look! Recipe below (doubled bc I have a big family).

image
image

Loaded Potato Loafs

  • Poke holes in and boil 6 large potatoes until soft
  • Peel potatoes (do this after boiling to retain nutrients and get the texture needed for the dough)
  • Mash into a smooth puree
  • Add 4 tablespoons of melted butter
  • Add 10 tablespoons of flour
  • Add a bit of pepper and a good amount of garlic salt
  • Mix until it forms a soft dough
  • Lay out plastic wrap and grease with a little oil
  • Place 1/8 of the dough into the plastic wrap and flatten it into a round shape
  • Add shredded cheese, shredded chicken, bacon bits, more garlic salt, chives, and Italian seasoning.
  • Grab the plastic wrap and use it to fold each edge of the dough over, starting with parallel ends. Make sure the dough is sealed all over and doesn’t break. It should be about the size of a spatula head for easy flipping.
  • Airfry two at a time. Fry one side at 450 degrees for 7 minutes
  • Flip with spatula and airfry other side for another 7 minutes
  • ALLOW TO COOL BEFORE EATING

Couple of notes:

  • Season the shit outta this thang
  • Like it’s actually fucking crazy that neither cook in the video mentions seasoning 🤨
  • Don’t overstuff with fillings if you’re frying in oil bc it might lose structural integrity and fall apart on the flip
  • I filled mine with just cheese and hot dog bits (it’s what was immediately available and I’m lazy) and topped it with some ketchup + mustard to go with the hot dog theme
  • It was bomb as fuck chef kiss 😚👌💋
  • I’ll definitely be making again and trying new fillings; this recipe is pretty much endlessly customizable

Okay so I made these without the cinnamon and nutmeg and lemme just tell you:

THESE MUFFINS TASTE EXACTLY LIKE DOUGHNUTS.

I DUNNO WHAT KIND OF VOODOO I PULLED IN THE KITCHEN BUT SLAP MY NIPPLES AND CALL ME BETSY BECAUSE THEY TASTE LIKE DOUGHNUTS HALLELUJAH IN THE HIGHEST.

i made these today! they’re DELIGHTFUL! (i made them with the cinnamon and nutmeg, but now i’m planning on trying them without and maybe filling the middle with some kind of jelly???? we shall see.)

YOOOOO… the recipe has spread. I’m conflicted about this, because I keep my copy semi-secret, because I use these to make friends. And then people can’t stop being friends with me if they ever want to eat them again (which is, I assure you, a compelling argument–they are delicious). Honestly, I bake a *lot*, and people always tell me these are their favorite thing that I’ve made.

But yes: if you’ve ever eaten my doughnut muffins, this is the recipe I use! PERSONALLY I like to double the amount of nutmeg/cinnamon in them, throw in a shake or two of ground cloves, and about ½-1tsp vanilla extract.

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.

Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?

What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?

Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

mossbear-minese

I don't remember where I saw this piece of advice so I can't credit it, unfortunately

But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"

Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character

in conversations about sex education for children many people fall back on teaching children to recognize and, hopefully, report predatory behavior as the primary reason why this education is good, and obviously I don't disagree with that! when I educate my 4th-6th students, we spend a significant amount of time talking about boundaries and consent and drilling in to the kids' brains that they do NOT need to tolerate inappropriate touching or other behavior from anyone, not even adults who might try to pressure them into thinking otherwise.

BUT! but but but! I think it's also really important to remember that preparing for the worst case scenario isn't the only reason to educate kids about sexuality and their bodies! kids deserve to enter puberty understanding all of the changes they'll experience, and not just the growing and sweating. it's good for kids to understand the new desires they might start experiencing! it's good to know about intense new crushes and erections and wet dreams and sexual fantasies and masturbation! those things can be really, really scary and confusing for young people who don't have any framework to understand them, and it's really easy to feel like you're doing something dirty and inappropriate if no one has told you that sexual pleasure and curiosity is normal, healthy, and good.

good sex ed should help students feel comfortable and safe expressing their sexuality! that's crucial!

batmanisagatewaydrug

deleted a reply that was like "yes for teens, but not for CHILDREN!!!" and I need to be so clear

biology doesn't give about what arbitrary age you've decided is appropriate for people to have this information. biology doesn't give a shit.

most kids are experiencing puberty by the time they're 13. trust me, they've noticed. they're sweating more, getting acne, growing breasts and body hair, getting their periods and bonded and wet dreams. one of my favorite students I've ever had was a very brave fifth grader who shared his experience about being confused and startled by his first ejaculations with the class, despite being visibly nervous and embarrassed to do so, because he was so relieved to learn that it was a normal thing he had experienced.

a lot of those kids already know they aren't cis and/or straight, well before they're teenagers. some of them aren't lucky enough to have support at home, at school, or with their friends. some of them are getting bullied. some of them already know that puberty is extra uncomfortable for them because it's giving them a body that feels hostile and wrong.

lots of those kids are masturbating! it's extremely developmentally normal for children, and even toddlers, to touch their genitals because it feels nice. they already know about sexual pleasure, even if they're lacking a wider understanding than "it feels good when I do this."

I know it's makes lot of people uncomfortable to think about, but human being don't become sexual creatures on our thirteenth birthday or when we turn eighteen or at any other constructed milestone. children have sexual thoughts and feelings and behavior because a lot of humans have those things and children are humans. they deserve education that acts like it.

If you're a parent looking to have this conversation with your kids early, and waaaay before hormones start making it awkward, there's an excellent author that wrote an age-appropriate sex ed book for AGE 4. My kindergartener has put this in his normal bedtime book rotation, because even at that age they're curious about "why doesn't Mom pee standing up like I do" and "why are our quail hatched from eggs at home but you had to go to the hospital to get my sister".

Look up "It's not the stork!" by Robie H Harris. They also make books for 8 and older, and if your library has them on Libby you can check them out first. Highly recommend getting the hard copies for your kids so they can flip through whenever the fancy strikes them, though. They will do so with no more or less frequency than their other books, because body things haven't yet been made weird for them.

(The only issue I have with this book is that they do the usual "making a fetus look like a tiny human" at a size when they're actually a clump of tissue. But that's a conversation you can have with your kids, too! Especially if you have your ultrasounds around, they LOVE seeing the Ultimate Baby Pictures.)

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.

danidarkarts

Yee yee!!! You got it right on the nose!

Bounce light is something I didn't cover but I adore it!

James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!

I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.

technecat-scratchings

Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.

While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.

An overview of the basic blend modes and how they work from Genevieve's Design Studio: Accessible with minimal color knowledge; practical and illustration focused. https://youtu.be/kMc87hQrJd0?si=TWCB365pKSfWS8p0. (16 minutes) This creator also has a ton of free resources you can download, including a Blend Modes cheatsheet, but fair warning: you have to create an account to get them!

Want to learn even more about the math-y stuff? It has great film visuals! A video from FilmmakerIQ: You need some basic knowledge of RGB color models, understanding of values/luma, and at least a tenuous understanding of Algebraic formulas.
