Unpopular opinion: the fandom is not just now toxic.
Hudson has been getting hated on since day one from non-fans and casual viewers, and anyone defending him were dunked on by fans who quickly pivoted to being Connor stans because they took personal issue with the Letterboxd situation, and decided Hudson was bringing negative press that would ruin Connor’s career. Yet now, because a white man is in the press for acting like he’s being strung up in town square over par the course rpf discourse (not excusable, but certainly not the only act of aggression that has happened within the fandom), people are saying the toxicity is out of hand.
Why wasn’t it out of hand when Hudson was being shitted on for breathing? Being called racial slurs, gay4pay, a misogynist, and p*dophile. Why wasn’t it out of hand when people were calling Hudson money hungry, and playing “devil’s advocate” as they sided with white actors who tried to belittle him for not being out, if it applies to him? Why wasn’t it out of hand when fans who “despise rpf” were calling Hudcon as a ship, all types of shitty and stupid and fake?
Why is it only out of hand now, when a 40 year old white man is upset that he isn’t being lovingly shipped with a 25 year old, by the entire fandom? And why isn’t that white man commenting on how awful people also were about Hudcon, if it’s rpf as a whole he takes issue with?
I keep harping on it, but y’all want so badly to “not like other girls” yourselves away from “toxic fans/shippers” that you’re completely missing the fact that racism has been flowing through these Heated Rivalry street since the first day the show aired, and not a single person who is standing behind the “wronged” white man, gives a fuck. This fandom has been toxic, but white people tears is the only thing y’all care to notice.
Also, Hudson is doing exactly what most people of color would do in this situation, since racism is part of our daily routine. He’s saying nothing, because he knows he’ll get backlash, and is instead focusing on building his career. It’s the only thing he can control, and it’s crazy that at 24, he knows this. Yet at 40… never mind.
