Next time I’m treating my posts like Wikipedia¹ articles with cited sources² for everything I say and additional bibliography³ so that you all can properly digest the relevant information instead of throwing nonsense up like little white babies⁴
This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.
Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for âbeing difficultâ. They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because âyou have it so goodâ.
So much of the world’s “riches” came from Latin America that it really makes the mind dizzy. You see all those palaces in Austria and you would think they are as far from Bolivia as possible and then you remember that the Austrian Habsburgs ruled the Spanish Empire and partook of the loot of the silver and gold from the Americas. You see the cuisine of Europe, Asia and Africa completely changed by American crops to the point that many don’t even remember where they came from. Silver from Potosí found its way from China to Sweden. All the world was enriched, directly or not, while the Americas were plundered. When you really realize the scale of it, the entire line of history bends around it.
Every other queer discourse boils down to “I think your identity exists too close to the status quo, and if you hid your identity from everybody and pretended to be a part of this status quo AND nobody looked too closely, you might be able to appear like One Of Them. and since we all hate everybody who has a status quo identity (even though their “status quo” identity is just as personal and valid as anyone else’s and don’t deserve to be hated on) that means we hate you too. And if you disagree, clearly you are just trying to attack people who aren’t a part of the status quo.”
It’s what the biphobia discourse was about, it’s what the aphobia discourse was about, it’s what the transandrophobia discourse is about, it’s what the AFAB trans fem/AMAB trans masc discourse is about. Some of y’all heard “nobody should be excluded because of their queerness” and turned it into “Some people should be excluded if they aren’t queer enough” and that’s a big problem. You shouldn’t be trying to get people to prove they’re queer enough. You shouldn’t be forced to out yourself in order to participate in community. “Well what if the cis straight guy gets in-“ well as long as he’s not doing anything wrong, then who gives a shit. You can’t tell who is going to do evil based on their identity. You can’t. It’s only through their actions that you can determine that. That should be the foundation of your belief structure.
(Edited to include trans intersex people because y’all are awesome and valid <3)
sometimes I talk about disliking copyright/IP on here, and I always try to stress that the reason these conversations matter is because copyright law is used in real life to hurt real people. I want to highlight a current example of this happening which I havenât seen talked about on my dash yet.
Solar Being is a small business run by two natural hair sculpting artists. their art has gone viral online a few times, and one of their most recognizable creations are their shaped hair puffs:
on Solar Beingâs legal defense page they say they âbelieve [geometric hairstyle] designs should remain free for others to use, reinterpret, and express through their creative and commercial endeavorsâ. and if these copyright infringement complaints are held up, it will likely affect the rights of other natural hair sculpting artists to create designs like this.
if youâd like to support Solar Beingâs legal fund theyâre accepting donations now, and Iâd recommend supporting them through social media as well. Iâm not personally associated with Solar Being and am just repeating what theyâve already said through their website and social media.
lots of people around copyright/IP discussions like to talk about supporting artists, and if you want direct that supportive energy somewhere productive I feel this situation is one that deserves your attention.
you know its so hard writing white people. ive never been white. i have been attempting to unlearn my bias in order to portray them accurately. i know its totally insensitive to call them all dirty incest hicks or yuppies or karens, but its just really hard to navigate that sort of delicate space. and people jump down your throat if you dont dont get every detail right so ive been really scared to include white people in my stories until now. i dont have any white friends so i cant really speak on the white experience. i watched a lot of modern family and icarly growing up so i feela strong connection to white culture i think its so beautiful. I mean i didnt know the difference between france and poland until two weeks ago, the american education system failed me. i just want my stories to be more diverse. if anyone has any tips on how to write white people they should reach out to me and say something. i dont know what white people eat or what hobbies they have or what clothes they wear. i can take criticism really well, i just dont want anyone to be mad at me
Can’t be sincerely dark without being called edgy, can’t be sincerely emotional without being called melodramatic, can’t be sincerely silly without being called stupid. They’re gonna hate every emotion you put in your art no matter what so make it anyway and be as sincere as you can be
it would kill half of this site to understand that kids start jerking off and looking at porn the moment they hit puberty and get any kind of sex drive.
w-what do you mean kids arent sexless and pure beings??? i-i thought sexual thoughts only appear when you’re 18…. or, no, 21……
i saw smth along the lines of “minors shouldn’t see porn, their brains are developing!!!”
this argument only makes sense if you
1. dont understand how any of human biology works
2. think of porn, depiction of the sexual act, as containing the primordial fucking sin, something that corrupts the minds of anyone looking at it
deeply fascist shit
i need people to understand the fact that the stigma surrounding being a child looking at porn was the very first step into terrifying me into being unable to speak about the sexual violence i endured, which in turn allowed for it to continue happening.
Official graveyard post
”official graveyard post” so i want to remind y’all this was posted like a month and half ago, i was magicalgirlbait. ive had 8 blogs since then. tumblr really really doesn’t like it when victims talk about their experiences
Itâs January 1st 2026, Public Domain Day! it is the day, once a year, in the US where copyright expires! why yes! today every book, movie, art work and musical composition published in 1930 enters the public domain, 95 long long years after it first appeared. Sound recordings are governed by a different law so every sound recording made in 1925, 100 years ago! are also entering the public domain
So whats public today? so glad you asked!
Betty Boop
Thatâs right iconic cartoon sweet heart Betty Boop is joining us out in the public domain. HOWEVER as always, itâs important to remember only stories and images of Betty (or any character) published in 1930 are free and she was a little different back then. She was a dog⊠no I mean the character was originally a human-poodle mix
the owners of Betty Boop, Fleischer Studios, have been very aggressive about letting it be known they feel like the original Betty is totally different and people better not touch their cash cow, so itâll be interesting to see what happens there.
Pluto
Mickey Mouse got a huge amount of attention entering the public domain a few years ago, well now Mickeyâs dog and the first of his friends, Pluto is joining him in the public domain. But like I said only what same out in 1930 is public. Pluto appeared in two Mickey shorts that year, and in neither was called Pluto. In The Chain Gang he had no name, and in The Picnic heâs âRoverâ (and Minnieâs dog)
Nancy Drew
Oh yes! a few years ago the Hardy Boys came into the public domain and now the girl whoâs very name, like Sherlock Holmes gets used as short hand for a detective, is entering the public domain. The first 4 Nancy Drew books, The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase, The Bungalow Mystery, and The Mystery at Lilac Inn are now public. Now! the original Nancy Drew books were all rewritten in the late 1950s and early 1960s, to make Nancy generally nicer and more 1950s suitable (though also to cut some of the 1930s racism out) those versions of the books remain copyrighted so be careful about what details you give Nancy Drew if you add her to a story.
The Three Stooges (but not Curly)
The 1930 film, Soup to Nuts would be the first film appearance by what was at the time knowns as âTed Healy and His Stoogesâ They would shortly ditch Healy who kinda becomes the Pete Best of the Stooges. You might think you know The Three Stooges, Larry, Moe and Curly, but thats not the line up thats entering the public domain this year. Now, if you didnât know, Moe and Curly were real life brothers, Moe and Jerome Howard (changed from the âtoo Jewishâ Horwitz, Larry was Larry Fine, also changed to sound less Jewish from Louis Feinberg). At first the Stooges included Moe and Curlyâs older brother Samuel, known as Shemp. Shemp left the group in 1932 and was replaced by his kid brother Curly. Fans likely know Shemp from his later work with the Stoogles. Curly suffered a major stroke in 1946 and Shemp stepped in and replaced him before his own death in 1955. So Larry, Shemp and Moe are now public domain, but Curly is not.
Miss Marple
Why yes, Agatha Christieâs The Murder at the Vicarage the very first appearance of Christieâs iconic old maid detective Miss Marple is now public domain. So if youâve always dreamed of writing a murder mystery team up book of Nancy Drew and Miss Marple, now is your moment! Though as always remember only what is in The Murder at the Vicarage is public domain. In this first outing Marple is sharper tongued and less kind than later versions of the beloved character.
Popular childrenâs book The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, illustrated by Lois Lenski and William H. Elsonâs Basic Reader, the book that taught generations of Americans to read with Dick and Jane are now in the public domain. For more grown up literature, The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett parts of the book became public domain last year but now the complete book is in the public domain. William Faulknerâs As I Lay Dying, Evelyn Waughâs Vile Bodies, and Agatha Christieâs The Mysterious Mr Quin and Giantâs Bread were all published in 1930 so are free and clear. T.S. Eliotâs long form poem Ash Wednesday is entering the public domain. For non-fiction you have Sigmund Freudâs Civilization and Its Discontents (in its original German) and the philosopher Bertrand Russellâs The Conquest of Happiness. NoĂ«l Cowardâs play Private Lives was also published in 1930. To return to childrenâs books, The Cat Who Went to Heaven by Elizabeth Coatsworth and illustrated by Lynd Ward, as well as Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome.
Movies
Two Academy Award for Best Picture winners, All Quiet on the Western Front directed by Lewis Milestone and Cimarron directed by Wesley Ruggles. Cimarron was released in 1931 but copyright was filed in 1930 so is now Public Domain. Hellâs Angels directed by Howard Hughes the first film to star the original blonde bombshell, Jean Harlow is now Public Domain. Greta Garbo and Buster Keatonâs first talkie films, Anna Christie and Free and Easy respectively, were in 1930. John Wayneâs first leading role, The Big Trail, as well as Bing Crosbyâs first appearance in a film King of Jazz are public domain. Two Marlene Dietrich pictures both directed by Josef von Sternberg, The Blue Angel in German and Morocco in English where she co-stared with Gary Cooper are now free of copyright. the Marx Brothersâ film Animal Crackers is also now public domain. Alfred Hitchcockâs Murder! and the film L'Age d'Or directed by Luis Buñuel and co-written by the artist Salvador DalĂ are also coming into public ownership.
Songs, Written
Songs composed and published in 1930, but NOT recordings of said songs, are entering the public domain, so you are free to record your versions of the following famous toons. The Jazz standard Body and Soul, I Got Rhythm, Iâve Got a Crush on You, But Not for Me, and Embraceable You by Ira and George Gershwin, Georgia on My Mind, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Livinâ in the Sunlight, Lovinâ in the Moonlight, On the Sunny Side of the Street, and Youâre Driving Me Crazy will all be free for artists to record this year.
TV? TV!
This will likely shock you but the first work of television to enter public domain would happen this year, since it would be almost 20 years before the technology would come into its own. Now this one is really theoretical. In 1930 the BBC made an experimental 30 minute broadcast of a play called The Man With the Flower in His Mouth. Since the broadcast was live and at the time there was no way to record television, thereâs no copy of it so itâs really just in theory that its public domain, but still interesting.
Art
its always difficult to judge when a piece of art was âpublishedâ so when its copyright runs out can be tricky however here are some we know for sure
Piet Mondrianâs Composition No.II
Theo Van Doesburgâs Simultaneous Counter-Composition
Sophie Taeuber-Arpâs Composition of Circles and Overlapping Angles
Martin MunkĂĄcsiâs Three Boys at Lake Tanganyika
Edward Westonâs Pepper No. 30Â
also the legendary Ansel Adamsâ photo book Taos Pueblo enters the public domain
undoubtedly the most famous piece of art from 1930, American Gothic by Grant Wood
If you grew up reading Sunday cartoons in the paper like I did you might be happy to hear, the original comic strip version of Blondie and Dagwood from the Blondie comic strip will be entering public domain. Fans of the strip might be shocked to find that when they started Blondie and Dagwood werenât married parents but dating young people, very different from what theyâd become over the 95 year life the strip.
Songs, Recorded.
unlike everything else on this list recorded song is governed by a totally different law, so songs recorded in 1925 not 1930 are what is coming into the public domain today. Hereâs a sampling of the greatest hits of 100 years ago
So happy Public Domain Day! if you have a favorite work entering the public domain I didnât mention feel free to reblog with additions
and remember, Copyright and Trademark are not the same thing, and its works published in the 1930, unless its a sound recording then its 1925 and all of this is US law.
