Media notes
A bird carrying food came closer and closer and then dipped into a nearby nest hole--a natural cavity at the end of a dead oak branch about 5 feet above ground. The sonagram seems to correspond to what Nathan Pieplow classifies as the "fast song", which is thought to be given only by males. The clear early morning (49F low at dawn) has become warm (75F) and cloudy (90% with thin, high clouds), and gusty winds are picking up.
Observation details
One bird was calling (recorded) while carrying food to a nest hole ca. 5' up in a natural cavity of a partially dead oak. It entered and presumably fed young and left. Another appeared at very close range at one of the campsites in Cypress Campground, lured in by playback of N. Pygmy-Owl.
