MC’S BL WATCHLIST

(in order of most excited for bc honestly there are so many bl’s coming out and i’m losing track) (also, all most links lead to legal streaming sites for all dramas so pls support these dramas legally every which way u can…)

~CURRENTLY WATCHING/OBSESSING OVER

  • THE SIGN – this was a show i didn’t really want to start until it finished its run, but then i started seeing gifs from the first two eps and was intrigued and literally couldn’t wait until february when the show finished…idk, i do love the pain of keeping up with ongoing shows sometimes.

  • BIG DRAGON THE SERIES – i…i dunno?? i heard it’s vaguely kinnporsche-esque, but i’m not seeing it. a thai bl about two decidedly asshole-ish people trying to blackmail one another and having dubious sex bc of the drugging and attempted blackmail.

  • SHE LOVES TO COOK, AND SHE LOVES TO EAT – a sweet, short sapphic jdrama about two women who are neighbors. one of them likes to cook a lot, but she only cooks small portions for herself, and the other woman loves to eat, so the woman who likes to cook invites the other woman to dinner one night and a beautiful friendship (and more?) forms…

  • BAD BUDDY – thai bl about rival families a la Romeo/Juliet but Romeo/Romeo, i guess?? heard rave reviews about it. BINGED THREE EPS WHEN I SHOULD’VE BEEN SLEEPING???? no regrets tho (well…some regrets.)

  • THE TUXEDO – thai BL about a tailor and super stuck up rich dude. the quality is…bad. it’s nonsensical; there’s absolutely no plot, and translations are horrible too, unfortunately. i don’t have any expectations about this series and i’m only tuning in because the two main leads are attractive af. (the production and technical aspects are very reminiscent of vietnam BLs; sigh. i was hoping this would give me history 3: trapped vibes what with the suits and dapper men, but unfortunately that is the only good thing about this series: the men in suits.) i can see the potential for this series to be great, but they keep disappointing me. I also keep imagining a BL series like bad buddy but where they’re both *rivals* in the tailoring business. like, i’d eat that sh*t up. having the damnedest time even finishing ep 1 bc, well, see above.

~ OTHERS IM INTERESTED IN CHECKING OUT

  • IN YOUR HEART – a chinese bl?? which is unheard of now if u’re familiar with chinese censorship on all things gay and el gee bee tee queue plus.

  • FIRST LOVE, AGAIN – aka, First Love For Three Times, a six ep korean bl featuring reincarnation\

  • OH! BOARDING HOUSE – k-bl about a dude whose mother owns a boarding house but suddenly leaves him in charge of said boarding house and some people in the boarding house develop crushes on him?? idk, landlords must not be evil over there in korea.

oh, btw, do we all agree that one of the truest victims of this movie was samson? dude was so nice he got inside the coffin without context. he even got jud to commit a crime for him! so his faith wouldn’t be shaken! what a guy

I love the symbolism of the jewel becoming part of the new cross after the events of Wake up dead man. I am literally chewing dry wall over how perfect this ending is for Jud Duplenticy, specifically.

Throughout the movie Jud keeps repeating that religion should not centralise the ego, hatred and violence. It should centralise community, love and acceptance in line with the teachings of Jesus. And then Jud takes this jewel that has caused so much pointless violence within the community. That has caused so much pointless violence against him. And what does he do? He gives it to Jesus.

He doesn’t keep it for himself, he doesn’t throw it away or give it to the church. No, he gives it to Jesus. Jesus who internalised all sin to give the world a clean slate after his death. Jesus who forgave humanity.

Jud forgives and lets go of the grief the community and church brought him. He acknowledges the sins his community and his church have committed and counters the hatred and violence with love. Because that’s what Jesus believed in. That’s what he fundamentally believes in. He is not here to “fight the wicked or bring them to justice”, but “to serve them and bring them back to Christ”

By “displaying” the stone as the heart of Christ Jud also buckles down on his belief that we need to openly acknowledge our shame and not hide it away. We should not let it fester until it consumes everything good in us, but acknowledge and accept it as a part of us. Because God acknowledges and accepts it as a part of us.

It’s a poignant callback to the exchange between him and Benoit Blanc where the detective accuses him of only joining the church, because it gave him a place to hide from his mistakes and to get a clear way to absolution. And Jud, who has openly talked about the mistakes that lead to him joining the church from the very beginning of the movie, counters that he didn’t find his way to god, because he wanted to find absolution.

He says he made these mistakes with open eyes, but that his faith helped him acknowledge those mistakes. He believes that his mistakes don’t condemn him for eternity in the eyes of God. He believes that God does not hide or fix people who have made mistakes. He believes that God loves people when they are guilty.

So he takes this jewel that has been tainted by violence and hatred. That represents the sins of the community. And makes it the heart of Jesus. Symbolically the community is not only forgiven, but also told they are loved even though they are guilty. Because that is the heart of Jesus’ teachings in Jud‘s eyes.

Thematically it fits so beautifully into Jud’s character arc. Honestly one of the most satisfying endings I have seen in a while

something that really intrigues me with the relation between Blanc and Jud is how it is used as a tool for character development for Blanc specifically. Out of all of his Watsons, this is the one that clearly needs his help the most, but wants it the least.

Marta wasn’t even a suspect until Blanc came along, and during their investigation she is trying actively to keep him from solving the case. Blanc himself is a piece of the game in trying to frame her, and in the end she needs him mostly to reaffirm what she should have known the entire time, she is a good nurse.

Helen seeks Blanc out and asks him for help, but by the time they get to the island it is clear that she can handle herself, even getting most of the information Blanc needs to piece it all together. In the end, he doesn’t tell her what to do or how, just inspires her to take the matter into her own hands.

Following this, it’s easy to see why he hauls Jud into being his Watson so quickly. He sees him as an obviously innocent man, but one that needs all the help he can get to not get thrown in jail. It is perfect, a Watson in distress for Blanc to dazzle with his skills and save at the last moment. However, Jud fights this every step of the way. He cannot look at the body, he avoids the full truth in his retelling of events, he stalls opportunities for progression, he tells Blanc to leave him alone, and he tries to confess to murders he didn’t commit. He actively makes it harder for Blanc, not only to do his job, but to do it the way he wants to. It isn’t malice or evil intent, it is just the person Jud is, and it goes against so much of Blanc’s character that he is forced to change, and the audience is changed with him.

With three movies to compare between, I really appreciate how each Knives Out movie explores justice from a different thematic angle, not based on the murder that was committed but based on the cruelty that led to that murder.

In Knives Out, a compassionate, ethical young woman treats everyone around her with generosity, and the people around her repeatedly try to take advantage of her kindness to force her into losing the fortune that was gifted to her by a dear friend. There, justice means that she keeps the fortune and decides that actually, she doesn’t have to be kind and giving to people who’ve proven themselves assholes.

In Glass Onion, a woman loses her sister to a gang of wealthy, successful people who’ve sacrificed their principles for the sake of ambition and ego. There, justice means that everyone involved will be made notorious: whatever their other accomplishments, they will forever be known for being complicit in the burning of the most famous painting in history.

In Wake Up Dead Man, the church takes advantage of a young girl’s loyalty and faith to place her under a lifelong burden and fill her with guilt, shame, and hatred. Justice means helping her understand what was done to her and the women around her, and giving her compassion so she can find peace.

This is cool because it means the movies contradict each other! The compassionate justice of Wake Up Dead Man would be totally misplaced in Knives Out, and so would the toppling-monuments justice of Glass Onion. And because each movie has something different to say, they all stand on their own and feel fresh.

This is also why Benoit Blanc is the uniting figure but never the protagonist of these movies. He’s an agent of legal justice in that he’s the detective and it’s his job to figure out whodunnit, but the protagonist – Marta, Helen, and now Jud – is always the character who delivers thematic justice.
