the horrible, horrible desynch between their words and the movements of the hand
lack of any clear place the hand is looking

Hello Charlie! Happy new year! I saw something interesting at my local aquarium, and I was curious if you could give me some insight? There was a large tank that housed both pincurchin and pyukumuku, and it looked like pyukumuku was patting/touching pincurchin with its projection of innards? Is that safe? What does a pincurchin even feel like?

okay that’s kind of funny.
while pyukumuku primarily use their innards for hunting or fighting, they can also use them to communicate and generally check out their environment! their innards have tons of nerve endings, and pyukumuku actually have really fine control of how they move. provided the pincurchin doesn’t mind- which it doesn’t seem to, given that it didn’t zap the pyukumuku- it’s totally fine. if the pincurchin felt endangered at all, it would send a stronger electric charge. pyukumuku and pincurchin tend to get along well together in tanks, so aquariums will often put them in the same tank.
pincurchin always give off a very slight electric current from their spines. it kind of tingles. the pyukumuku may well just find the feeling enriching!
