Juniper marks the beginning of a new era of Merz releases. The first since 2019.
As with most of Conrad Lambert’s previous records, this new single represents another geographical relocation. This time a return to England after 7 years living in California’s Mojave Desert.
Juniperus Communis is a plant native to the British Isles. Historically used in purification ceremonies and rituals.
The song speaks to a summoning of moral clarity, resolve and action.
“I find hope in the revitalizing, restorative power of nature and the transformative agency and joy of collective action, and a loathing of apathy. That’s why I’m singing this song. That’s why I wrote Juniper,” said Lambert.
“It’s a song that came together as I was rediscovering the country I was born and raised in. I’ve returned frequently to England from the Mojave Desert over the last few years to visit my Dad, who has Alzheimer’s disease. It is often called the long goodbye. This reality is bringing me back to my roots and ancestry; what I know intrinsically and instinctively. At the same time, I’ve grown as a person. Married an Irish-American. Travelled and lived abroad. My concerns and outlook are global.”
With Juniper, Merz joins the current vanguard of musicians forefronting the natural world amid the biodiversity crisis.
“Living in the Mojave Desert, surrounded by a largely intact ecosystem, I had an awakening of how potent nature can be in its true form. Britain, though it’s hard to hear, is one of the most nature-depleted lands in Europe and is in the bottom 10% globally for biodiversity. You realize we’ve got a lot of work to do here to bring the balance back. If we achieve that, it’ll go a long way to re-igniting the spiritual heart of these lands.”
Guesting on Juniper is London musician Idris Rahman playing tenor and baritone saxophone.
It was mixed by Conrad Lambert at Matthew Herbert’s Human Jerky Studio in Kent and mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Gordon.
