(grabs you by the shoulders) you have to make room for new experiences in your life. you have to go through the unpleasant work of leaving your comfort zone, even if just for a few minutes at a time. because if you don’t, your brain will trick you into stagnation. you will start to believe that the world can barely fit you in it. but that’s not true. it’s the opposite way around. you can fit the whole word inside of you. your task is only this: to welcome it with open arms
a thing that i particularly love about the hunger games prequels is how it shows that people have been fighting against the games since their inception
when i was younger and read the original trilogy for the first time i was so bothered how it was 74 years of games, i remember thinking how could it have gone on so long without anyone doing anything
these prequels highlight that people have been fighting from the get-go: lucy gray’s defiance, reaper ripping down panem’s flags to cover the fallen tributes, haymitch’s games and how many others shared his ideologies - the capitol just drowns them out, they rewrite their stories so their efforts are forgotten
liberation takes time and it’s built upon the actions of those in the past
Effie is actually not fanservice because she is important to the theme of propaganda in SOTR
Effie is 100% brainwashed AND YET she still hasn’t lost her humanity. She believes propaganda completely AND YET she doesn’t use it as an excuse to abuse people. Throughout the book, the tributes are constantly dehumanised. But Effie doesn’t treat Haymitch that way. She helps the team. She’s there for him in the launch room- which Drusilla and so many Capitol citizens would never do.
So there really is no excuse for abusing people, not even “I was lied to” or “i thought i was in the right” or “I was fed propaganda”
You still choose how you interact with people around you and how you treat them.
anyone else thinking about effie spending 24 years watching haymitch completely fall apart. effie, who met haymitch by accident, who knows exactly what kind of person he is, who sees him every year on his birthday for 24 years and each year he’s drunker, each year he’s angrier, each year he’s faster to give up. and then they get katniss and peeta. peeta, who is kind and open and understanding, who refuses to give up on haymitch. and katniss, who is so much like haymitch at 16 that it hurts. and over the few days they’re together, effie watches haymitch come back to life. watches him try. watches him have hope. and then they get to keep not one but both of those kids. they get to come home. and then, less then a year later, effie pulls haymitch’s name at the reaping.
I wish Maysilee Donner would’ve met President Snow. He wouldve said some corny shit like “Snow lands on top” and she would’ve eaten the words and chewed them right back up so nasty that he would’ve been so ashamed to say them ever again.
