Herm who had no male figures in his life to look up to, suddenly having a found family of amazing men who worked so hard to overcome their past and turned into hero’s the world could be proud of.
Robert who praises him and makes him feel like he belongs. Encourages and pushes him past his limits. Making him not just a better hero, but a better man.
Chad who pokes fun and roughs him up. All out of affection, not that he would ever admit it. Hyping him up on calls and in bars. Getting him to break out of his shell and stop fearing the space he may take up.
Victor who shares financial tips and actually helps get him on the right path to finally have some savings in his account. Paying back grandma’s medical debt and finally ahead of the credit card bills.
Colm whoes soft spoken and listens to him before imparting wisdom in the form of soft poetry. Words that linger in his mind. That he can draw from whenever he feels lost.
Katon-ur who is sweet and kind and blunt. Someone who he never has to guess true ntentions with. Who smiles brightly at his presence and listens to him ramble about stupid things.
Bruno who acts like a brother. Plays with him, teases him, annoys him. In the best way possible. Getting him use to losing and sharing. Someone who doesn’t need to talk sometimes, just happy to sit in silence together.
When grandma’s asleep and the house is quiet, he sits in front of the fireplace and talks to his grandfathers urn. Wishing he was there but thanking him for sending so many good men in his place to help lead him through life.
Herm who can always read the teams bodies better than they can.
Robert finds a steaming cup of lemon and ginger tea on his desk when he walks in with a slightly sore throat that he was going to write off as sleeping funny. (Herm heard how horse it sounded on the last call of the day yesterday)
Flambae finding ibuprofen in his locker at the end of a shift because his shoulder has been acting up all day with the heavy lifting calls. (Herm saw him stretching it with a wince at the start of the day)
Chase finding a warm heat pack on his chair when he gets in on an uncharacteristically chilly morning. (Herm knows his knee always acts up in the cold)
Mal and Prism finding chocolates and pads in their lockers because against their will, they’ve managed to sync up. (Herm doesn’t exactly keep track, but their moods were off yesterday, so he took a guess)
Visi running out of her inhaler in the middle of a shift, about to pack it in and call Robert to get sonar to pick her up so she can get her refill but finding it in her back pocket, completely unaware of ever putting it there. (Herm counts her puffs and knows her locker combination)
Herm who just notices things and acts on them because he can. And because he loves them.
Based on this post I made. Robert has a depressive episode and everyone tries to help, but only Herm succeeds. He might not be a hero just yet, but he’s damn good at taking care of someone.
Robert going into a deep depressive episode and the team doesn’t know how to help. They keep offering food and water and company but he just stares straight ahead, not moving. Occasionally they get a little grunt or sigh. But he’s completely shut off. Hasn’t showered or eaten for days. Clothes soiled and sweaty. He sleeps without actually sleeping. No rest, just eyes closed.
Chase says he just needs space and to give it to him. He’ll be ok.
But Herm tries one last time. Picking him up and taking him to the bathroom. Flossing and brushing his teeth for him. Sitting in the bath with the shower pelting down on them as he soaps him up and wraps him in a towel. Brushes his hair and shaves his face. Gets him new clothes and dresses him. Sits with him on the floor and spoon feeds him some soup. Cleaning up any he dribbles down his chin.
And then Robert breaks. Holding him tight and sobbing into his shoulder until he’s fast asleep on the wet man’s lap.
Herm may be working on the hero stuff. But he has always been a carer. And a damn good one at that.
