They didn’t bring up the painting because there wasn’t a way to address it without Mike realizing he’s in love with Will’s feelings for him. They dropped the Will being connected to Vecna and the hive mind plot line when it came to actually killing vecna because they knew Mike and Joyce would be the two that would be affected the most if anything happened to Will. They couldn’t have a proper rejection scene because they wrote themselves into a corner and know that there’s no world where Mike doesn’t love Will. They didn’t make Mike’s trauma flashback about Will because they didn’t want to make it seem like Mike cares about Will the most even though their relationship has been the foundation of the show since the very beginning. They basically ignored Mike and Will’s relationship as a whole this season because they just didn’t want byler to happen and couldn’t find a way around it.
