So wait are livestock guardian dogs to their flocks like… Clark Kent among the residents of Smallville? He’s been here since he was a baby, we all know him, and he’s… generally one-of-us shaped, uh, approximately. And then when something goes wrong he suddenly leaps into action and does some terrifying impossible shit none of us could do. And then comes back home and settles in like nothing happened and he’s one of us again.

Actual answer: the sheep know the dogs are not sheep, and they also know the dog is protecting them and take their cues from the dog about whether they need to run for the barn or can just ignore anything scary that approaches.

However, a friend once had an extremely premature orphan lamb born in December who had to live in the house for a couple of months with leg braces and all that, who due to spending her lambhood with dogs instead of sheep came out of the whole experience convinced she was a livestock guardian dog! She would patrol the perimeter of the fields every evening with the actual dog, stand watch in the barn door at night like the dog, and was more than willing to throw down if she saw something scary coming towards the flock the way the guard dog did. Tragically orphaned lamb did a convincing job at being a guard dog without actually having any of the biological advantages a dog has over a sheep.

Which I suppose made her Sheep Batman.

Piping hot take: I don't give a shit if straight actors play queer characters as long as they do so with empathy and authenticity. When you say shit like "only queer actors should play queer characters" what you're actually saying is only OUT queer actors should play queer characters. If you're assuming an actor (or anyone else, for that matter) who hasn't declared their sexuality is straight, you are participating in heteronormativity.

saltedweather

you're also saying that you, as an audience member, are entitled to private and intimate details of actors' personal lives, fwiw.

if you ever read any interview with Tim Curry, he's always very clear about finding this absurd. we all pretty much assume Tim Curry is queer, but we'll never know, because he has absolutely point-blank refused to discuss his dating life with the public or the media, because it's nobody's business but his (and anyone he's dating ofc).

it's also like--

some of you younger folk really need to go watch the documentary on Paul Reubens. "Peewee as Himself." Like, the context might help a little? for why so many of us who grew up before Obergefell et al really, really, really fucking hate this narrative where the public has a right to every single facet and detail of an actor's life? especially a queer actor?

actors, musicians, comedians, entertainers, etc., don't owe their audiences jack fucking shit about their personal lives. we can all get over that absurd entitlement any time.

doberbutts

I was just talking with my partner about this a few weeks ago.

Lee Pace is similarly an incredibly private man. For a long time we the public knew absolutely nothing about his dating life or anything about his family outside of little bits and pieces he shared, and even that was deliberately as vague as possible.

He played a trans woman in Soldier's Girl. It's based on a true story, and he actually met with the trans woman his character is based on. During the interview, he said something to the effect of having several stark realizations about himself after working with her and learning her story and her journey and her life.

I make the joke that anyone transgender heard the distinct sound of an egg cracking during that interview. And yet, Pace did not come out. Not until he was forced to, years later.

As, simply, "queer".

We now know he is married to a man. We know he identifies as queer, mostly because he was forced to by an interviewer who has a reputation for forcing very private celebrities to come out or risk losing status. We know he has dated men and women. By his own admission that playing Calpernia gave him very strong gender feelings and he saw a lot of himself both in the fictionalized character he played and in the real woman whose presence he was wow'd by.

Lee Pace might be a trans woman who has found it better to boymode for the sake of an acting career. Lee Pace might be a trans woman who avidly does not want to invite a spotlight into that part of his life- and who could blame him? Lee Pace might be an egg who has just barely started to crack, peeked out from beyond the shell and is not yet comfortable leaving the closet. Or Pace might be nonbinary, genderqueer, gay-as-gender, or... simply a cis gay man who feels it is nunya and enjoys being a little fruity and feminine in his spare time.

I don't claim to know the inner workings of Pace's mind, sexuality, or gender. But I do think that it would be wrong to force Pace to share what he clearly is not comfortable sharing for the entire world to see.

When it comes to celebrities who are respectful and also private, I don't think it is a bad thing if what we as fans know about them doesn't quite match up with the demographic they're playing. Sometimes, there's a reason they found a piece of themselves in the role. And especially when it has the blessing of the real life person that role is based on (such as in the case of Calpernia) or of the real life LGBT people working with that celeb every day - maybe the people directly involved with this know more about this person than we do watching from the other side of the screen.

[image description: an excerpt of text that says:

“It’s funny,” I told Flewin. “We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She’s weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem.”

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

“Oh, my!”

justahumblememefarmer

TL;DR on the article

The husband was writing an article on classic video game records, was surprised to find out that holding the Tetris record is a bit of a big deal, and mentions how good his wife is at it.

The guy he’s talking to mentions that the record is 327, way lower than his wifes usual scores of 500-600.

They travel to a tournament, and she goes to do her attempt. Just after she beats 327, and is climbing higher, a judge brings up to the husband that the specific version she’s playing actually has a different record of 545.

She overhears that she needs to beat 500-something, and keeps going, setting the record at 841.

which, they later find out, is her second-best record

There was a decent but ultimately forgettable fantasy novel I read a long time ago that had a single moment that stuck with me.

The protagonist has just won the world famous sword fighting competition in the big, rich capital and is talking to his mentor, and says something about being the best swordsman in the world. The mentor frowns and tells him that no, he isn't. He is the best swordsman out of the people that could afford to show up to this tournament. There could be a mercenary way out in the mountains, patrolling a snow encrusted fort's walls that could kick his ass and there was no way to know until he was already losing to the guy.

I think about that a lot, and how for every apparently dominant competitor, there might be a fucking ronin out there somewhere capable of destroying them.

It's not just to have a "do over" that doesn't involve the original cast, it's to cut them out of the royalties. Literally the entire point is to make sure all the money made by Harry Potter goes to transphobes or people willing to work with transphobes.

If you watch it, you are supporting bigotry, hate, and oppression. That's just objective reality. All for a story that you probably have already seen in movie and book form.

went to my best friend’s house last night and saw a little plushie dog and plushie cat that had been sewn together down the middle into a two-headed chimera. I said, “did you do that?” she said, “yes, I saved them.”

turns out at her old job when the last two plushies hadn’t sold and became deadstock, her boss told her to cut them up and throw them out. so she cut them each in half, preserved their heads, and then rebuilt them together.

cannot stop thinking about the way these little plushies were approached with the instinct of a Vampire or some sort of ancient god. “Let me save you [turn you into a monster].”

The fact that the beheading was at the order of a superior, and the solution was to create some sort of monster of disobediance to the letter of the law instead of just lying and saving them adds a certain mythological resonance.

Get in the house. (For women, confinement is always waiting to envelope you.) Some pranksters put up a poster announcing another remedy, that all men be excluded from campus after dark. It was an equally logical solution, but men were shocked at being asked to disappear, to lose their freedom to move and participate, all because of the violence of one man.”

"Why would this character be jealous of their friend's romantic relationships? Clearly they're in love with them" I don't know if you guys have ever Had Friends but it's actually pretty common for people to feel jealous if their best friend suddenly has less time for them and is prioritising someone they just met over them. That's not inherently romantic, that's the general human desire to be valued by the people you value.

real quick if anyone is confused: professional athletes are paid a lot of money because they generate a lot of money. if you believe that professional athletes should not be paid a proportional share of the revenue they generate, you are anti worker's rights and also fundamentally do not understand how labor works

somejoyinmudville

like hey. im a communist. i am not arguing for rich people. i am arguing for workers to get paid what they are worth for the labor they perform. athletes being paid a lot of money is not a hill you have to die on. it is not a consideration you should be incorporating into your political and economic policy. athletes are not special, they are workers, and if you say "this worker does not deserve to be paid what they are owed" you are anti labor and you should not be trusted under any circumstances.

somejoyinmudville

also like. arguing that white male athletes should not be adequately compensated for their labor is really not the leftist win you think it is when wnba players get 9% of the leagues revenue and pwhl players are forced to work second jobs. if you think the recognizable names of major men's sports shouldn't be compensated, what do you think about workers rights for bench players and 4th liners in women's sports who are paid astronomically less?

I think a lot of people on tumblr probably need to hear the pizza metaphor given to me by a fellow queerio.

She said, “I think sexuality is an appetite. Like, I love cheese pizza. I could eat cheese pizza for the rest of my life. But if I’m starving and there’s pepperoni right there- well, I might have some pepperoni.”

And it struck a deep cord with me. We both identified as lesbian but had slept with dudes while accepting this. For me, I was a horny teenager in a small pseudo-rural town. My options were slim but I had a sex drive. I had a lot of bad sex with dudes. I had some okay sex with dudes.

I dated a dude for three years with both of us knowing full well that I wasn’t really sexually attracted to men when we got into a relationship. I fell in love and thought maybe the sex might follow and it didn’t. I tried different labels and some fit better than others. It’s still a coin toss whether I feel like queer or lesbian describes me best on a given day.

But much like eating a slice of pizza with toppings you don’t care for there was still aspects I could enjoy. Gender is like this. Sexuality is like this. It’s okay not to know, and it’s okay if you try things and it’s okay if you think you like pineapples but later your tastes change. It’s okay if you COULD eat some variety of pizza but it’s just not what you really want. It’s okay if you don’t like the pizza but you like the company that comes with it.

It’s all okay.

foldingfittedsheets

@earthtothedaydreamer

image

Okay. I’m going to assume that this is a good faith argument and engage with it as such, but also what you’re saying has been parroted at me by TERFs as well. You have just said that I don’t get to determine what my sexuality is because you don’t agree with the circumstances under which I slept with someone.

Let’s look at this from a different angle. If an ace person who does not experience ANY sexual attraction chooses to have sex with their allosexual partner- that’s not self harm. That’s them loving their partner and choosing to engage in an activity willingly. You don’t get to tell someone who’s ace that they’re not ace for sleeping with their partner. My sexuality refers to what sparks sexual attraction, but it does not mean I need to be disgusted by anyone who doesn’t fit that criteria.

Maybe there’s an ace person who is sex repulsed, who will not get any benefits from that experience. That is what you’re describing here. I am not advising with this metaphor that someone who is gluten intolerant eat pizza. If you HATE dudes, then this metaphor might not be for you.

Maybe this metaphor is for a trans person who does not experience dysphoria with their assigned gender, but experiences euphoria with their actual gender. Or a trans person who doesn’t like most aspects of their assigned gender but did like some parts of it. They don’t need to feel guilty or fully reject aspects that they did like, and I find it really shitty that so much of the queer community feels this intense rejection of things that don’t fit into their idea of a label.

I had sex with a dude I loved because he was my partner and I chose to be with him because I didn’t think sex was the end all be all of a relationship. His companionship was precious to me.

If YOU are sex repulsed by men, that’s okay. But you do not need a gold star to be a lesbian, you do not need to have hated every moment of sex you had with a dude. It’s literally okay to be like, that wasn’t great, but some parts of it didn’t disgust me? It’s even okay to be like, that was fine but I don’t want it again because I’d prefer this other topping. That’s it.

dykepuffs

This is something where I wonder if the reason that we don't have words for the different ways of interacting with sexuality, because many of them are still so taboo in some ways.

As in, the difference between;

"If the only option to have [the kind of sex I want] is with someone I am not attracted to, I would rather not have it." and "I will have sex with someone I am not attracted to in order to have the type of sex I want."

Where "type" can be anything from "the kink I enjoy" (eg "I want to fist someone", "I want someone to flog", "I want someone in latex") to "at the time and place that I want it" (eg "I want to go to the bathhouse tonight", "I want to go home with someone after the party", "I want to join the mile high club") to "in the emotional sphere that I want" (eg "I want a friend that I have regular sex with" "I want just a one night thing" "I want sex with someone I love and share domestic life with")

I know it's a joke, but at the same time... There are straight men who will have gay sex in the bathhouse because they want truly anonymous sex, and it's more valuable to them to have that, than to need to have it with women. I feel like it's more well-known in kink circles that there are plenty of people who will pick partners for kinks who are known to be experts in that kink, even if they aren't "their orientation", because they're more concerned with seeking out the best caning top, needle player, double-fister etc. And even cishets know the experience of going home at the end of the night with someone you don't fancy, because you just wanted to end the night of dancing with sex.

And I feel like there is still a lot of judgement towards people who experience their sexuality like that- Either outright calling them sluts, or desperate, or leaning into pop-psychology and calling it self-harm or dopamine-addiction or whatever, when it's just another way of being.

doberbutts

I know the answer is probably "corporate interests" which are the bane of my media-heavy hobbies but I wish things like this were more common and could be actively sold in a general market.

I just dug up and sold several electronic devices from yesteryear that I no longer use and am kind of frustrated at the amount of devices I still have. What stops me from building a PC that can play all of those games plus PC exclusives? Why are videogames the only media allowed to do this- imagine needing a special branded 500ish dollar device to read a book, watch a movie, or listen to a song, except you actually need 4 different 500ish dollar devices (and tbh for PC somewhere in the thousands range at times) if you want to be able to finish the TV or book series, or listen to everything on the album, or even just watch the next movie made by the same director. What's stopping people from just trashing all of that and making something that can handle it all?

And I know. I know. The answer is "Nintendo will put snipers on your roof". But I think that's the world's stupidest system and I've thought that since I was handed my first gameboy at 5 years old.

Anyway a friend of mine did this with the GameCube, Xbox, and ps2 back in the day since his brother was a computer engineer and I know people have been doing similar for ages but. I wish it was more common, more viable, and could actually be sold. I'm so done with this.

nerdsorrow

sorry to like, say too much on your post OP, because this isn't a real answer to the real problem, but everything up to the PS1 era can be emulated on a modern computer (and depending on the amount of 3d jraphics, many PS2 titles can be as well)

Here's the all in one that people use to do it: https://www.retroarch.com/

the game files are generally called "roms" and are technically illegal to pirate, (experiment with downloading at your own risk) but it's not illegal to have a rom file backup of any games you already own. It's widely winked at by the retro games community, and especially those who are passionate about archiving - for games that are out of print, downloading a rom is the only way to access the game any more, and there's no more money for nintendo to squeeze out of them.

You can automatically download the "cores" (programs that allow you to emulate different systems) directly through retroarch.

doberbutts

Oh, I know how to emulate, that's really not the problem I'm having and not really the point.

I'm just being annoyed that we can't have the technology utopia of just being able to have A Device that plays games rather than having to buy a ps5, Xbox series x, switch 2, *and* a PC to play everything. I've sailed enough of the high seas to know I can emulate pretty much anything prior to 2005 quite easily, and anything from 2005-2015ish is somewhat doable with enough patience and effort on a powerful enough PC. The issue is that there's 10 years of media since then that's not currently possible for unless I'm willing to either hunt for deals (which I did) or drop fat stacks of cash and be willing to own several devices when technically the only thing keeping them from being playable on a single device is proprietary nonsense.

Tdlr I hate what corporate interests have done to technology.

I don’t care if you make fun of Catholicism as long as it’s accurate! The best humour has its roots in the truth.

“You can be mean to me but there are RULES about it” is the most Catholic thing I’ve ever seen.

I know everything is shit fucked sixteen ways before lunch time, but it remains a fact that you should not trust anyone who wants you to feel like the whole world hates you all the time. That's a person trying to sell you something, swallow you whole, or bleed you dry. Especially those times when it feels like they're right.

No one wants anything good from you who wants you always feeling scared and hated. They will wear you out and leave you in the bin the second fashions change. Things are extremely high levels of fucked, but you are not hated like that. It's scary and isolating but you are not alone like that. Worst case, come and shiver like a wet dog with me, I won't say anything and we can dry out.

I think this is being taken as a generic positivity post, but it is very much meant to be cautionary. Now more than ever we are easily manipulated by our own justified anger, which is reason enough to always force yourself to pause a minute, five minutes, to consider if something is worth your anger, if it's even true or just upsetting.

I enjoy when people give me a hard time about using the term "sequential art" because they think it's just a pretentious way of saying "comics", because when I point out that "comics" and "sequential art" are overlapping but non-identical mediums, they invariably demand an example of sequential art that isn't comics, and I get to hit them with "PowerPoint presentations".

@urlocallesbiab replied:

i like how you said "overlapping" instead of "one being a wider category than the other" do you have any examples of comics that don't count as sequential art? (this isn't a gotcha question, this is me engaging in good-natured, sportsmanlike pedantry, along with expressing my curiosity)

A scan of the infamous "cow tools" comic from Gary Larson's "The Far Side". It displays a single panel depicting a cow standing on its hind legs, staring at the viewer. In front of the cow is a low wooden table on which four lumpy implements of unclear function or purpose are displayed. The rightmost implements vaguely resembles a carpenter's saw, apparently carved from wood or stone; the second-to-right is a long wooden stick with three short, asymmetrical prongs projecting from it at various angles; and the last two are indecipherable blobs of some unknown substance. The panel's caption reads "cow tools".ALT

Quick and absolutely non-comprehensive field guide of Christian breeds:

Roman Catholic: Oldest version and the one pretty much everyone else split off from. Ornate churches, elaborate vestments, formalized and ritualistic service. Very hierarchal and patriarchal; Pope is head of the church and all clergy are male and celibate. Most, but not all Christian monastic orders are Roman Catholic. Primary ranges: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, and places with strong colonialist/immigration ties to the above (especially Latin and South America).

Eastern Orthodox: Split from the Roman Catholics during the 12th century. Churches tend to be more dome based, icons are everywhere. Less centralized than Catholic church. Male priests, may be married or unmarried but usually depicted with thick beards and either very fancy robes and crowns or black robes with a black hat and veil. Primary ranges: Russia, Greece, eastern Europe.

Anglican/Episcopal: Split from the Roman Catholics when Henry VIII wanted a divorce. Sometimes called "Catholic Lite" because "high church" vibes are very Catholic at first glance (notable differences: less emphasis on saints/Virgin Mary, lots of references to people in Oxford and Canturbury, priests who may be married, female, and/or openly queer). Monarch of England is nominal head of church (except for Episcopals, who are what American Anglicans became when they didn't like the whole king business), but like most things with the monarchy it's an empty title and the Bishop of Canterbury is generally regarded as the official head honcho. Primary ranges: United Kingdom, US, Canada, former British Empire areas.

Lutheran: Split from the Roman Catholics when Martin Luther didn't like forgiveness of sins being a pay-to-play deal. Generally more minimalist in look than Catholic or Anglican. Wide range of subgroups including Evangelical (generally moderate to progressive), Missouri Synod (conservative) and Wisconsin Synod (extremely conservative). American Lutherans have a reputation for extreme stoicism and throwing lots of potlucks. Primary ranges: Germany, Scandinavia, Midwestern US.

African-American: Churches of various denominations that minister primarily to Black Americans, because segregation was A Big Thing for much of the country's history. Usually depicted as having passionate, enthusiastic preaching with call-and-response ("Can I get an 'Amen'?" "AMEN!"), gospel choirs, and ladies in really fancy hats. Primary ranges: Black communities throughout the US.

Latter-Day Saint/Mormon: Splinter group formed when a guy named Joseph Smith claimed to find a whole new part of the Bible. Famous for polygamy but nowadays this is limited to smaller fundamentalist sects. Aggressive missionary work; being approached by young men in black pants and white button up shirts calling themselves "Elder (Name)" is inevitable anywhere around a Mormon ward. Very conservative; EXTREMELY white. Primary ranges: Utah and Idaho, with a smaller but still distinct presence in other western US states.

Evangelical American: Loose organization of non-denominational churches with strong social and political presence. Primarily responsible for 98% of the "faith-based" media made in the last thirty or so years. Typically found in large mega-churches, converted anchor stores in strip malls, and high school auditoriums. Very conservative and making that absolutely EVERYONE'S problem. Primary ranges: anywhere in the US where they're worried someone is learning evolution, feminism, or socialism.

an-aura-about-you

Also, just to swing back around to Catholics since that's who I know, there are other tells.

Family with a lot of children? Either Catholic or quiverfull. Quiverfull is not any specific denomination, and there are similar movements outside of Christianity, but the term comes from Psalm 127:3–5. Here it is from the King James Version of the Bible care of Wikipedia:

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

Besides that, Catholic families are not just big but tend to have no qualms about drinking. Heck, they put out a whole 'nother set of mysteries for the Rosary since I left the Church and they make sure to include Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana.

Speaking of that, you can gauge when a person left the Church or even if they're still in it based on how they respond when you say, "Peace be with you." The response when I was a kid was, "And also with you." The response now is, "And with your spirit." And then there's the third possibility: they left before the Church made the switch from saying the Mass in Latin to saying the Mass in the spoken language of the area.
