A fun thing about fiction with large casts of characters is that sometimes you'll have a Spicy Bananas moment where every single character has an identical yet wildly atypical experience of some very mundane thing, and slowly you realise that the author isn't Making A Point, they just think that's normal.
Another super easy and fulfilling way to give back imo is to make yourself available to elderly people in your community for cleaning, yard work, and grocery/medication deliveries. I told a friend of my grandparents’ who has cancer to please tell me if she needed help with anything. And she’s been giving out my number to more of her friends. Today I’m going to clean the condo of a woman who is recovering from surgery and can’t leave the house. These people often have no one they feel like they can ask for help. Make it known that they can ask you! <3
it does still make me insane specifically how many queer people lovingly embrace astrology. I went to a poetry workshop yesterday that was genuinely quite good but also included an option to disclose astrology designations during introductions and so many people broke out some variation of "I'm a [x] sum but I have a [y] placement and it SHOWS" girl no it doesn't. that's meaningless correlation you completely invented the causation
I'd say that rejecting biological determinism in favor of space gas determinism isn't the slay the astrology queers think it is but if I'm being completely honest I fear that many members of our community haven't even really rejected biological determinism so much as sprinkled a layer of glitter on it
yes that's how confirmation bias works
People get their panties up in a twist about astrology because they think it’s people shoving themselves into boxes that are not pre-existing.
Most people who like astrology like it because it reflects things about themselves that they relate to that they have difficulty vocalizing themselves. And things like doing a chart reading can allow you to gaze deeply into yourself
yes that's how confirmation bias works
#wait wasn't that also OP?#is this the third such post now?#we shouldn't be pissing on the poor at all#“ok so we should only piss on the poor a little when there's no toilets free”

bonus close-up bc Peri crown has ensared me body and soul and I need to draw more of it:

Why do artists refuse to use references why why why.
It’s not a contest to see who can get by without them. It’s not cheating to look at a thing in order to know what the thing looks like.
You don’t get stronger or better by pretending. Nobody is impressed by the awkward whatever-it-is you just drew. Use references.
I don’t think a lot of people know that it’s not cheating. I recall seeing so many piece of art called out because they referenced a pose, someone recognized it, and then proceeded to shame them for it. There’s this belief, both by creators and the audience, that artists should just be able to translate the ideas from their head to paper, and if they don’t, it’s plagiarism, or not true originality (spoiler alert: there’s no such thing).
I myself didn’t start using references until very recently, because even I was under the impression that it was frowned upon. And that belief has seriously crippled and stalled my ability to improve as an artist.

As a restarting artist, I can confirm. I just never knew. I thought you were just supposed to know how to draw the body correctly and if you didn’t you had no talent.
(( I am going to say this again, loud and clear for everyone:
USING REFERENCES FOR ART IS NOT ‘CHEATING’!!!
If you can draw/paint without references, great! But if you need to use them, and feel that your art can be bettered by using references, please, use them! This is one of the biggest tips I can give to artists, is USE REFERENCES!
Anyone who would dare to attack someone for using references after ‘recognizing a pose’ is a dipshit, who doesn’t know a thing about art.
Do you know who else used references for their art?
Norman Rockwell
Alphonse Mucha
Gustav Klimt
Toulouse Lautrec
Vincent Van Gogh
Paul Gauguin
Edgar Degas
Gil Elvgren
Frida Kahlo
Pablo Picasso
Disney Studios
And thousands of others! So, artists! Go forth, and use references!!! ))
What do you think artists do when they ask someone to stand infron of them for 6 hours and then they draw this person. Do they cheat? Or when they place a still life and then paint it, cheating again? LOL

#literally one of the biggest fears I have #is for some douchefuck to dig out my reference #and point at it and say that I’m not a real artist #I don’t want you to dig out my references to prove that I didn’t make up a realistic picture out of fucking thin air #that’s not how art works #but especially on this site it happens CONSTANTLY #it’s so fucking scary #when people who’ve never touched a pen in their lives think they’re qualified to judge you #and ‘reveal’ how you’ve ‘scammed’ people
Soooo. I made this post originally on my personal blog (I’m eliciaforever), and it was nothing more than a little rant about a specific incident that I deleted after five minutes. But before I could delete it, it took the hell off on me, and now it has all these notes. And LOTS OF AMAZING INPUT.
And I just wanted to add in response to the above tags in particular, that shaming people for using references is something that happens to so many of us SO OFTEN. It doesn’t matter how skilled you are. People think art is supposed to be magical or whatever, and anything else is a crime. The reality of course is that art is a thousand times more deliberate than a lot of people think it is.
So yeah. Good info to pass along. Use references, kids. <3
Reblogging because I think it’s important especially for young artists to gain the confidence to use references.
Seriously, references are esssential! Use them!
This is so relevant to my struggle.
IM HER E TO ASK ABOUT SHERMIE IN DRAFTED AU!!!!
Giving our boy the depth and character arc he's doomed to never have in canon 🔥🔥🔥 !!!!
Just how unwell is he doing???? Doing fine after learning that his baby bro fled from the war to not end up like him, aye???
Also, also,,, do the first 2 lines of Atlantic City's chorus echo Shermie's thoughts about Stanley???
"Well baby, everything dies, that's a fact But maybe everything that dies someday comes back"
Annnd what is his relationship like with Ford, and the one with his parents (esp Filbrick)???
Lemme tell you a little story about Sherman Pines.
That man is an Older Brother. He's seven years older than his twin brothers, so he's been in charge of taking care of them pretty much since the beginning. He's part of the reason why Stan and Ford ended up having different names instead of both being called Stan. He loves his brothers so much.
Shermie is also a man that was born in the late 40s, and was raised by a man who idolized the army and their Great Nation. Shermie learned real fast that the easiest way to get his father's approval was to either bring home a lot of money or get into the military. And well... the last one was just quicker.
Shermie started his service at 17. He trained in the workweek and helped in the shop on the weekends. And, whenever he could, he'd join his siblings at the beach and marvel at their determination on fixing a completely wrecked ship.
Shermie was soon drafted to Vietnam, and you bet he was damn proud of that! He was gonna fight for his country, to protect it! What else could a young man want?
(To see his newborn baby. To wake up next to his wife. To have lunch with his parents. To watch his brothers graduate.)
Shermie left, and fought, and lost. The battle, the war, his colleagues. And, above everything, he lost faith. Faith in the cause he was willing to die for.
Faith's got nothing on the things he's seen. Or heard. Or done.
Shermie returned home a changed man— like all of them, really. But while others came home with missing limbs or mentally unstable, Shermie came back... alright. Some physical damage and whatnot, but overall alright.
Sometimes he wishes he didn't. It's much easier to explain how you lost a leg than your conviction in the Great Mission.
He wasn't welcomed back home. People don't take well to their son returning home after losing a war and criticizing their belief in the army. In short, Shermie came back to New Jersey and quickly cut ties with his dad, who was even quicker to let him now he was a disappointment not only to the Pines name, but the entire country. To say it hurt would be an understatement, but Shermie was too blind with rage to let himself feel the pain. Instead, he packed the few belongings he had left in his childhood home and drove all the way to Atlantic City to his wife and newborn child, ready to leave everything behind.
It's hard to start again. After all, no matter how much or how fast you run, there's something you can't ever truly leave behind. The one thing you can never get rid of. The one you have to learn to live with.
And that is yourself.
About the Atlantic City chorus: that song is about Shermie and how he views himself. "Everything dies" meaning his youth (which everyone has to leave behind), the way he used to be, that's what he's mourning. "But maybe everything that dies someday comes back" meaning he's aware he's not the same, that nothing will be the same, but maybe some good parts of it (of himself) can come back. If he tries really, really hard.
[ Drafted AU ]
More fics of Ford not wanting to upset Stanley and giving him false hope during his teens. He's going off to college but you can do it too Stan! You could visit and find job there? We could live together as roommates!
Roommates? Oh stan- im staying in dorms but you can..uh.. you can find one of your own! And if not, there's always home to go back to! You befriend people easily right?
so on... Stan, of course, falls for it everytime and Ford thinks he's protecting his brother without knowing hes hurting him even more.
@dark-lord-of-awesomeness hiding angst in the tags again I see. Can’t keep getting away with this 😔
it's a bot parade
it's been 12 hours ;__;
*stands on side of road clapping as bot parade goes by*
Don't talk to me or my (*checks notes*) 2,478 bot followers ever again
*waves goodbye to the bot parade* 👋
shout out to that one week 2500 bots followed me all at once and I've never been able to take follower counts seriously since
just posted this to instagram and facebook. let’s see which auntie gets pissed off at me lmao
I always get a kick out of androids with penises being described as "fully functional" because there are so many unexamined teleological assumptions in play re: exactly which functions qualify. Some day I'm going to write a story where a bepenised android is described in passing as "fully functional", then twenty chapters later some looming disaster is narrowly averted by the fact that the android can piss.
the bicentennial man movie (1999), where the robot gets himself converted into a more and more realistic android over the course of the film
has a scene somewhere in the middle where the roboticist awkwardly informs robin williams that he thinks he has come up with a design to make him 'a...complete...man,' which baffled the ever-loving heck out of me as a child.
i eventually figured out this was a euphemism for 'a working penis,' but i was dubious about how difficult that would really be to accomplish. it was like...basic hydraulics, right? a dick wasn't weight-bearing or prehensile, or anything especially complicated to engineer.
there was no way that was going to give a fancypants android designer trouble, right? was i missing something???
Please help me. One of my brothers asked for my help doing an art and when I said “okay first off let’s get some reference images” he said “oh I don’t do those.”
my brother in Mom what the fuck do you mean you don’t do that
