WRONG. talk about it. shout about it. yell about it. scream about it. so what if it’s a fanfic? it’s done with love and passion. it’s art created by a fellow human being who, despite life and lord knows what battle they may or may not be going through, probably stayed up all night writing it before they shared it with the world for free. they’d probably spent months or years writing it. it’s as much a piece of art and literature as any other art and literature that aren’t fanfics. and unlike artists who make profit off their works, fanfic writers truly write for free, because they are that passionate about their stories. the least we can do is show them our love and appreciation.
One of my favorite things about Project Hail Mary is how it portrays alien life. Usually in sci-fi, intelligent alien races are always astronomically more advanced than humans to the point of absurdity. Instead, in phm, eridians and humans are portrayed on basically the same level of advancement with humans maybe being a little more advanced. and they want to learn from each other instead of one trying to conquer the other. very cool and very refreshing
There is no way they’re going to be able to hit all the story beats in Project Hail Mary, which I’m assuming will be the length of an average Marvel film, but even then I don’t think 2 hours is enough. Even if they go Endgame on us, I really don’t know how they’re going to fit in all the story beats. Hopefully they manage to keep in the most important though and do a good job at portraying Ryland’s relationship with Rocky, ‘cause that’s where a lot of the charm of this comes from IMO.
Okay, all this to say: I finished PHM, obviously 😂 I’m surprised that I like it as much as I do because I don’t typically read sci-fi. It’s just not something I normally reach for and I was kinda hesitant because of that, but sooo many people talk about it and recommend it + you recommended it to me personally too. I’m really glad I bit the bullet and read it. It was definitely worth the read and now I get all the hype.
My favourite part of the whole thing is probably Ryland’s relationship with Rocky tbh. Their relationship is so heartwarming and I just really like Rocky as a character. His mannerisms and speech are so cute. Also, I like the reveal where Ryland comes to the realization about himself and how ‘late’ it came in the story, so they better keep it that late in the movie too. That’s one of the flashbacks/memory recalls I think needed to be placed where it was.
I don’t know if it’s unpopular opinion or not, but I really like the ending. I think I heard a couple people complain that there isn’t enough explanation about what happened on Earth, but I think that’s fine. I don’t think we need exact details about how this or that happened. It’s fine if it’s a little open ended, so I hope they also don’t mess that up and change it in the movie. Just keep it as it is. It ended in a good place.
I’ll go into the movie with cautious optimism because I watched the trailers and it looks good, but looking good and being good are two different things.
Okay, that’s all I can think of to say right now. Thanks for the rec! I might not have actually bit the bullet to picked it up if you didn’t personally put it on my radar, so I'm glad you did because it was worth it.

YAY! You finished it and liked it! Another win for me! And for you since you liked it!
You're exactly right. I don't see how they're going to shove it all in there, so unfortunately I fear things will be cut which sucks.
This is another one of those instances where a TV show where every chapter is an episode would be awesome! Like that really would be pretty epic. But hey, I'll take what I can get.
And yes! Their friendship is my favorite thing about this book, and I love it so much. They're just two intergalactic besties saving their worlds together, and I love it.
I didn't know there were people who didn't like the lack of Earth info at the end. I mean I personally loved the ending and thought it was so well done. It was so good that I immediately started listening to it again after I finished it LOL. I don't need all the details. What I was given was enough for me.
You're welcome for the rec! I'm very glad you enjoyed it! If I think of more, I'll shout into the void for you! And if you ever think of any for me (no pressure, of course) my inbox is always open.
"How do you write such realistic dialogue-" I TALK TO MYSELF. I TALK TO MYSELF AND I PRETEND I AM THE ONE SAYING THE LINE. LIKE SANITY IS SLOWLY SLIPPING FROM BETWEEN MY FINGERS WITH EVERY MEASLY WORD THEY TYPE OUT. THAT IS HOW.
Ataru form, or whatever.
tbh I can't differentiate between the forms except for the basic idea of it, like makashi = dueling; ataru = acrobatic and probably a lot of spinning.
thank you @droidkisser for the image :3
A Crosshair x Tay'kaa Western AU One Shot
Summary: Crosshair, once a feared and respected sheriff, finds himself on the other side of the law after killing a corrupt superior in what he believed to be an act of justice.
Now on the run, Crosshair finds himself tangled up with the West's most infamous outlaw: El Toro de Hierro. The Iron Bull.
A bandito whose real name was 'Tayen del Mar' and who had a tendency to live life on the edge and flirt with Death. He was a dangerous man, not one to be messed with, however, the most dangerous thing about the man was how much Crosshair needed him.
Word Count: 7k
Across the jagged tops of the devil’s backbone, a grinning moon accompanied by thousands of shining stars looked down on the blue sands of the desert that mimicked the ocean waves it so loved. That moon illuminated the barren wasteland with a soft glow that was so very different from the harsh light in the day that beat down on anyone or anything that dared to step into the light.
The animals were out, safe from the intense heat. They had no qualms about slithering, prowling, hopping, hovering, or stalking across the dirt and rocks. Their own little symphony away from Man as night took over and the cool breeze settled in. The crickets cried in melodic chirps while owls hooted from above and hares thumped underground. A soft little tune so very different from the cacophony of chatter and metal, of steam and pick ax, and of gunpowder and dynamite that occupied the day.
The sound of Man went silent at night, especially out in the depths of the desert where Man rarely made it out in one piece and never made it out alive when alone.
But tonight, the song of the night was accompanied with the canter of hooves, first in the distance before they steadily got louder and louder, forcing the animals to quiet down and listen as the hooves pounded against the sand and echoed across the walls of the canyon.
The sound of hooves once were a part of the song of the night, but now they were a part of Man’s melody. Followed by the clinking of spurs, the churning of wheels, and the snap of a whip–they cried a new song. Sure enough, as the horses approached, two men sat perched atop them, guiding them down a road traveled by rabbits and lizards.
One was dressed in a white hat and dark chaps, shining like the stars above, while the other was in a dark hat and poncho, nearly blending in with the dark purple canyon walls. One a disgraced sheriff running from his past, haunted by his image plastered on posters in every town he visited; the other an infamous outlaw, who loved to flirt with Death. Two very different souls, traveling down the same road.
Far off in the distance, a coyote wailed to the sky, making the two men slow their horses down to a stop as they took a moment to look back and listen, breaths held.
The one in white grinned at the sound, while the one in the dark frowned, eyes narrowed in the direction of the howling. They stopped and waited until the night went silent again, the sound far off enough for them not to worry.
“They’re calling you home, Toro,” the man in black, deemed and only known to the other as ‘Crosshair’ drawled, glancing over to the other. He had no name, or at least no name he was willing to give the outlaw, so the other called him as he saw him; a lonely cowboy with sharp brown eyes, heavy with baggage the man didn’t seem to want to surrender, and a tongue and trigger finger that was quick, accurate, and calculated.
"Crosshair." The finest marksman of the West. Once a feared sheriff upholding the law, now on the run when he murdered a corrupt superior who had ties that went further up than what Crosshair had been counting on–resulting on him becoming a Wanted Man for his crimes.
The other in white? Tayen Del Mar - also known as the "Toro de Hierro"–the "Iron Bull"–from both admirers and enemies, for his bullish build and stubborn attitude, paired with his talents with his fists and his irons. An infamous bandito that Crosshair had found himself stuck with for the journey ahead.
Tay knew the other side of the law that Crosshair didn't - he knew how to survive out in the Wild West and had saved his ass a few times since, from bounty hunters coming to collect - so begrudgingly Crosshair let the man tag along.
"An adventure" was what Tay claimed to have wanted out of Crosshair when they first crossed paths. But Crosshair had always been a paranoid individual, so he couldn't be too sure of the man's intentions. Either way, Tay was the first person he had come across that didn't pull an iron on him upon first interaction, the first person who could keep up with him, and the first person who seemed willing to stick around after his older brothers all skipped town and left him behind to rot with his hat and badge.
As the coyote continued to howl in the distance, Tay shook his head, chuckling softly as he turned away from the sound to face Crosshair.
“Don't got no home,” he replied, a smile on his lips despite the far-off look in his eyes. More cries of the coyote pierced the night and the men turned their heads towards the sound, shivering atop their saddles as the sound sounded closer than it was before.
“C’mon…” Crosshair muttered, more so to his horse than to Tay, as he tugged the reins and started off again; hooves trotting against the sand.
Tay didn’t budge right away, his sharp amber eyes narrowed in the direction of the coyote’s howls, a small smile tugging at his chapped lips at the haunting cry before he followed after Crosshair, tugging at the reins as well and turning away from the sound.
Some ramblings under the cut about this particular one shot!

Dang. The skill needed to know how to use all of those machines, the vision, the planning. Wowzers.

fun fact one of the world champions in pepper-eating contests is a trans woman and she actually faced significant backlash because people somehow thought she had a biological advantage. to eating spicy pepper

update bc i went back and checked: her name is brianna “the chilli queen” skinner and she set a record in 2017 by slamming back 23 carolina reapers consecutively. she only stopped when told to by the referees, and the next year she stepped down out of boredom. queen
Here's a picture of her, by the way
And her super supportive wife
The championship, it should be noted, is unisex. Apparently being a trans woman gives you an innate biological advantage over both cis men and cis women.
