  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Staalplaat proudly announces the reissue of Iran, a landmark release in the expansive Muslimgauze catalog. Originally released in the late 1980s, Iran holds a unique place in both Muslimgauze’s history and that of the label itself. Not only was it the first Muslimgauze album to appear on Staalplaat—beginning a long and prolific partnership with the Dutch imprint—but it was also Staalplaat’s very first CD release, marking the label’s transition from cassettes to the digital format. For Muslimgauze fans, Iran is especially significant as the project’s debut appearance on compact disc.

Although concise, with only three tracks, Iran is a striking statement. The album opens with a powerful extended remix of “Lion of Kandahar,” a track driven by relentless, pulsating beats layered with bells, drones, and synth strings. Its rhythmic intensity and inventive shifts exemplify Bryn Jones’ radical fusion of global sounds and electronic experimentation. “Qom” follows with a hypnotic, echoing clatter that builds gradually, while “Intifadah” closes the album in dramatic fashion, weaving together throbbing percussion, sudden tempo shifts, and unexpected textures of strings and sitar.

For this special reissue, the CD packaging has been completely redesigned, underscoring the enduring importance of Iranas both a pivotal moment in Muslimgauze’s artistic journey and a milestone in Staalplaat’s evolution as a label.

about

An important release, and not just musically - this is the first album by Muslimgauze for Staalplaat, proved to be Bryn Jones' staunchest supporter, releasing the lion's share of his massive discography over the course of the 1990s and beyond. Only three songs long, Iran still deserves attention if only for the killer opening track alone, an extended remix of "Lion of Kandahar." It's a slamming song with a pulsating beat that alternately takes over then subsides back into the mix, as other drums and percussion play around it. Bells, drones, and synth strings flesh out the overall piece, at times doing a radical revamp of the core beat as well. As an example of Muslimgauze's radical fusion of styles, it's near perfect. "Qom" has its points, with a strange, echoing clatter providing the main rhythm among many as the song slowly but surely builds. I still falls a touch flat, however, against the brilliant opening track. "Intifadah" brings it all to a fine conclusion; cymbal clashes herald yet more throbbing beats, occasionally dropping many of the rhythm tracks in various combinations. Some nicely unexpected shifts in tempo are provided, as string and sitar noises, among others, slide out of the speakers.
