Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara

In the detective business, everyone knows the name Keiichirou Nagumo. Back in high school, he was called a genius for cracking tough cases that even the police could not solve. But those days are long gone—or so the rumors say. However, one day, an unexpected visitor barges into his office: Mashiro, an energetic high school student who demands to be hired as his new assistant.

Although Keiichirou tries to brush her off, Mashiro is persistent. She is determined to become a detective, and to prove her worth, she begins by teaching him about the latest technology and offers a fresh perspective on his business. Thus, Keiichirou takes Mashiro on as his assistant and embarks on a brand new chapter in his career—one where he finds himself constantly surprised by the modern generation of detectives.

This is an enjoyable but sometimes boring parody of the detective genre.


§ Overview

1. Nagumo Keiichirou is a renowned detective but well past his prime. Nowadays, he is just a mediocre detective.

Enter Mashiro. She arrives at his office, demanding to be his assistant. She proves to be a capable detective....in her own way.

1. Let's talk a bit about the studio and staff.

⚫ This is from LIDENFILMS, which also gave us both seasons of Call of the Night, the second season of Goblin Slayer, and the currently airing Fall 2025 seasonal, 'May I ask one final thing?'

It seems not to be their primary IP during the summer season, but it's still worth watching.


⚫ I haven't seen director Kujou Rion's other works, but he is not new. He has over two decades of experience to draw from, working mainly as either an assistant director or a storyboarder.


2. Let's talk about everything else.

It's not a serious anime. It's not even up to the mix of seriousness and humour of Detective Conan.

It is mostly parody and therefore cannot be realistic. One cannot take seriously how strong, like a gorilla, Mashiro is, which the visuals even represent her as such, unless you buy into its premise of parodying commonly known detective tropes. This anime mocks such tropes for humour.

An example would be a case involving a ghost captured on camera. You'd expect that it has a natural cause. Indeed, that has been the case. But unexpectedly, Mashiro did indeed capture a ghost.

In other words, it's about solving the case with unexpected and funny resolutions. Sometimes, Mashiro solves more than the original problem.


3. It is also how young people deal with cases using new technology, making proven methods of detective work outmoded. Nagumo-sensei, as a detective, is useless, except for grounding Mashiro into the realities of the adult world.


4. It is structured mostly as having two separate parts per episode, the titles of which can be seen in the ED of the previous episode.


5. It features exaggerated faces similar to Grand Blue. But unlike Grand Blue, it's not as successful in being over-the-top funny.


6. I do not count the OP and ED in my final score, but if they are good, they add more to the experience.

⚫ "Suffer" by Taiiku Okazaki is a standard rock song that sounds great. It's about the struggles of Nagumo-sensei as an old man.

⚫ "GORI☆GORI Feez e-Girl!!" by Hanazawa Kana is just as catchy as her opening song for 'A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof.'


§ Conclusion

I still recommend this anime as it is funny enough to pass the time. It's just that it's not something you would like to watch in one go. One episode per day or at most per sitting would do.


NOTA BENE: A rating of 5 out of 10 means that 1) I find this anime to be average, 2) I enjoyed it to some extent, but it has some flaws. 3) Or simply, I rank it below my 6's but above my 4's.

A 5 means a passing score. If you're the kind of viewer who treats anything below a 7 as irredeemable, I'd encourage a broader, more nuanced approach to rating.

My enjoyment spectrum lies from 4 to 10. If I have scored an anime below 4, I actively dislike it.

Mixed Feelings

Detective's These Days is not exactly an innovative or interesting work. It's a referential comedy that deals in referencing detective media (and often many other things, a la Bobobo or Gintama), and that comedy is fine. It receives inconsequential little guttural laughs every episode, some episodes moreso than others, but the big issue is that this is the epitome of seasonal anime, in that I could not imagine watching this beyond a seasonal setting, nor could I imagine reading the manga for this.

That's not a bad thing, it's just that now that it is over, I can't heartily recommend the work. It's fine, it's occasionally ... funny, the art is good, character are endearing, but this isn't actually Bobobo or Gintama. It's not some hilarious comedy I could sit and watch for hours, it's one I could watch for 24 minutes a week with minimal effort on my part to think about it or seek it out beyond the obligatory search on those sites.

Thematic depth is not a concern of this work. Deep characters is not a concern. Mashiro starts as a loudmouth idiot and ends that way, and the same is true of every character. The opening and ending essentially tell you everything you need to know about the anime. Nagumo is shown dealing with the horrors of being incredibly old (mid-30s) in the opening song, his body is in pain, his looks are fading, he needs glasses, and the lyrics pair well with that. In the ED, Mashiro dances to a song explicitly about herself as wacky random things happen and there's glimpses of a tomorrow (the next episode preview), one that Nagumo lacks.

That is Detective's These Days. That's it. That's the show. It's not deep, it's not special, it's not particularly funny, but I will look back on it fondly, and I'll listen to the OP and ED whenever I need a dose of 2020s nostalgia when I become a decrepit 35 year-old man who can't understand the kids these days.

I think you can get from the title of the show that this will not be a very serious anime. This is a slapstick/parody anime where the the girl detective Mashiro seems to follow cartoon laws. For example she can hide and bring out tons of stuff that she hides under her clothes. She can run super fast and jump high.

Part of the humor is the contrast of the two personalities, one middle aged man and the other a high school girl, and the interaction between them.

Personally I like it when a detective show takes itself seriously and where there is tension .

I like the ... OP/Intro and ED/Outro songs.
