Onmyou Kaiten Re:Birth

Teenage delinquent Takeru Narihira has been having a recurring dream where he is chased by monsters, only for a mysterious girl to always rescue him. Having fallen in love with her, he promises her on their 1,999th meeting that he will be the one to save her the next time. But a motorcycle accident sends Takeru to Denji Heian-kyo—an alternate version of Japan's ancient capital with futuristic technology and the home of the girl from his dreams, Tsukiyima, who does not recognize him.

However, a black mist soon descends upon the city, petrifying citizens and unleashing monsters called oni. Only the so-called onmyouji—sorcerers who wield mystical powers and pilot magical "shikigami" suits—can fight them. When the mist returns, Takeru discovers that he has strange transformation powers and can resist the oni. But he and Tsukimiya are ultimately killed, and Takeru awakens in Denji Heian-kyo once again, this time two weeks before the appearance of the mist. Swearing to protect Tsukimiya at all costs, Takeru vows to become an onmyouji and change the future.

Well, that was an anime...
I really liked the direction of the scenes, especially combat, though CGI was bit on the eyes, scenario left me bit disappointed, but had some really good twists that didn't feel like taken from the butt.

Would I reccomend it?
If you have nothing else to watch and liked shows like Tengen Toppa or Re:Zero (weird mix, I know, but both fit) - you MIGHT like that anime. Start might feel bit confusing if you don't try to decipher the story, but it all comes together eventually.

Supporting characters felt flat, main cast was really good. Character abilities felt like typical shounen ... troupe - which isn't exactly something I liked....

Mixed Feelings

Now that the anime is completed I'm glad we have a resolution.
If you're looking for a completed story, an easy to complete watch, a dash of surprising twists and some fighting scenes set in a world where the historical and sci-fi meet, this might be for you.

Onmyou Kaiten has a striking and unique visual design, and the world of Denji Heian-kyou has a distinct atmosphere. The anime also offers a refreshing, non-harem-focused protagonist and the fanservice is minimal.

Though I feel this anime could've been more, it's far from the worst.

ARTSTYLE
Unique and modern.

... CHARACTER DESIGN
Apart from the main character and his love interests, a lot of characters have a generic feel about them.

ANIMATION
Blends 2D and 3D moderately well. I liked the fighting scenes but they don't compete with scenes from bigger names

PLOT
All I can say is that nothing is what it seems without spoiling. In my opinion it has one too many twists in an attempt at being more interesting and that energy could've gone to exploring the implications of other twists.
The pacing in the beginning feels slow and towards the end a little too fast.
I'm irritated at the shallow romance sub plot and it never truly deconstructs its shallowness.

WORLDBUILDING
A lot of time is spent on worldbuilding and that pays off as you slowly start to see reality for what it really is.

SETTING
One of its stronger points, Denji Heian-Kyou is unique and not all there is to the series.

CHARACTERS
The MC got on my nerves one too many times with his random shouting of family values. Beyond having a motivation, the characters don't feel fleshed out.

OVERALL
This certainly isn't an anime of the year but stands above most generic isekai still. Understand that I'm only harsh because I try to be objective, my overall enjoyment could be expressed as 6.5-7/10

'Onmyo Kaiten Re: Birth Verse' is quite a surprise among the entries for the Summer 2025 season....for better or worse. If you're planning to watch the first three episodes to see what it's like, it's going to give you the full picture. You will be left with the wrong impression. All I can say is that this anime is something that you either like or hate.


§ Overview

The delinquent Narihira Takeru is directionless and prone to fighting people. One day, he gets involved in a motor accident that sends him to Denji Heian-kyo, which is just Kyouto in the past but features futuristic technology. He meets ... the girls of his dreams, whom he had fallen in love with earlier.


§ Notes

1. Let's talk about the studio and staff.

⚫This is from David Production, a studio that's almost two decades old. It features some recognisable shows such as the Urusei Yatsura remake, as well as Planetarian and Captain Tsubasa.

⚫ Looking at the director, Takahashi Hideya — the person who also directed two seasons of the Urusei Yatsura remake — not only directed this, but he is also the original concept creator.

I say that he is creative, so I'll give him some credit.

⚫ Credit must also be given to character designer, Morita Kazuaki. The protagonist, Narihira Takeru, reminds me of Kuwabara from Yuuyuu Hakusho. The other characters also don't look generick.

He also worked as a character designer for Blue Orchestra. Even if the characters there remind you of some other character, they are distinct enough.

The same could be said about the old series, My Bride is a Mermaid, where he also worked as character designer.


2. If you've given this the three-episode rule, you would think that this is an isekai. By Episode 3, you would think that this also involves time travel.


This is not entirely true. Prepare to be mildly mind fucked. It's going to take you 3/4 of the way before you can even define its genre. This uncertainty often makes it feel as if the plot resets every now and then. That's how unpredictable this is.

Having said that, whether you will like it or not depends on liking or disliking a certain character development. I certainly didn't like it, but your mileage may vary. Hint: It's about betrayal.


3. You don't know who the real enemy is. You can't really invest your emotions if who your comrades are changes too frequently. Perhaps this would have worked better with more episodes because the worldbuilding is better than the average anime.


4. I have no problems with the CGI. It reminds me of the special scenes in Battletech where they see reality differently.

In this case, in the anime, it's how it functions as a quasi-mecha anime. Takeru rides a 'robot', so to speak, but this is just part of it. It's not what makes this story click for those who like it.


5. The action scenes are great. The animation is a bit above average.


§ Conclusion

I commend the effort for creating this anime. It's unpredictable and doesn't bore you.

My biggest problem, though, is how it tries to have one's cake and eat it too. It has chosen an outcome that's too undesirable and attempting an aftermath that bridges it, a fanservice that doesn't negate the earlier outcome.


NOTA BENE: A grade of 2 out of 10 means either of two things: the anime is extremely boring, or it may have fun elements, but it's ultimately illogickal and doesn't make sense. Or just possibly, I rank it above my 1's but below my 3's.

My enjoyment spectrum lies from 4 to 10. If I have scored an anime below 4, I actively dislike it.
