Middle aged anime enjoyer. Married with kids. I like nearly any genre as long as it is done well.
Tired of watching the same cliched tropes being used to death.
Most anime is derivative, trash, and/or boring, so I usually only watch a handful of anime each season.
I tend to review something if I feel strongly about the series and/or my rating is different than the consensus.
9s and 10s are for an excellent series that sticks with me long after viewing it. Good/interesting enough for me to consider worthwhile to reread/rewatch any time.
7s and 8s are for a series that was good to very good, but one that I will only occasionally consider rereading/rewatching.
5s and 6s are for a series that was average or a little above average. Almost no shot I revisit it.
3s and 4s are for a series that was bad to really bad. Maybe I stuck with it because it had potential, was highly regarded, or I watched it when I was young and barely cared about the quality of the show, but it has too many flaws for me to rate the series higher.
1s and 2s are for a series that I ask myself why I even wasted my time on it.
I have a tendency to rate earlier seasons of long running series higher because issues with the plot/writing generally don't appear until later on.
I also tend to weigh the production values of a series less than other aspects such as characters, writing, etc. because animation will always improve over time as technology continues to improve alongside it and because a series with all sizzle and no steak isn't going to be worth diddly squat to return to as future works surpass the production quality of their predecessors. You can just watch the relevant sakuga highlights on Youtube.

If you want to argue with me my anime "hot take/hill I will die on" is that Oregairu is overrated trash and Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki-kun is what Oregairu fans imagine their series to be.*
Oregairu is a self-insert male fantasy about a loner/loser that sucks at "reading the room"/communicating with people magically being a better communicator than more socially adept people around him through the power of wish-fulfillment since we never see any development to the contrary. Oh yeah, he also gets multiple love interests despite the lack of social skill development too. Sound familiar? If that reads like every generic seasonal anime starring a loser/loner protagonist it's because it is. Dressing it up with some pithy/pretentious sounding monologues/dialogues and subversion of certain tropes doesn't change the core formula being used. It also doesn't help that the comedy sucks or that so much of it is boring and/or stupid either.
Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki-kun is a story about a loner/loser gamer with zero social skills that the audience gets to see develop through a combination of effort and guidance. As he progresses down the path to self-actualization, including making major changes in how he dresses, talks, etc. he draws a corresponding increase in female attention. It doesn't hurt that the creator actually understands comedy either.
Am I being overly harsh/praiseworthy in my descriptions? Maybe. Are my points wrong? HELL NO!
If you disagree with me, go read my reviews for my full thoughts on both series and then politely message me why you believe I am wrong
*Specifically referring to the anime but after reading free previews of the LN I'm fairly confident I would feel the same with the source material. I refuse to spend money to confirm it is just as shitty as the anime.
