The standoff with agents happened on Jan. 8, one day after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in south Minneapolis. Wooten’s refusal to comply with ICE was captured on video and posted to Facebook.
The agents tried everything to intimidate the guard.
“You can’t come back here, bro,” Wooten can be heard in the video saying to an agent wearing a mask and sunglasses. “I’m talking to your manager,” the agent said. Wooten responded: “No, you’re talking to security, I’m in charge.”
ICE left empty-handed. Wooten said he just stood his ground, “10 toes down.”
“I was doing my job like I’m supposed to,’’ Wooten said. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I just want to make my family safe because I’ve been here three years.”
The new autistic Barbie is making a bunch of level 1/low support autistic people just come out of the woodwork to just openly talk about how they just hate the idea of level 2 or 3/high support needs autistic girls just having any scrap of positive attention. They have such weird internalized issues with even being seen as in the same community with people who need more support than them.
It’s not a neutral thing that every ‘redesign’ or ‘fixed’ version of the doll from level 1/low support autistic people gets rid of her disability aids, specifically her AAC device.
This is a doll specifically meant for level 2 or 3/high support autistic girls, a doll to make them feel seen because the rest of society is so hostile to them. The fact some people saw these girls getting one scrap of positive representation and then got mad because it wasn’t about them really says a lot about how people don’t even consider these girls as humans worthy of respect and kindness.
You can complain about the lack of good representation for level 1/low support needs autistic people - hell I’ve complained about it a lot before. But acting like level 2 or 3/high support needs autistic people getting positive representation is somehow taking away from or harming other autistic people is not helpful and is actually harmful to autistic people in the long run.
Instead of complaining about one group of autistic people getting positive representation , go and encourage people to see the full spectrum of autistic people. Encourage them to make all types of autistic characters that portray autistic people accurately and as people deserving of respect and kindness.
