See like it's so easy to overlook how good fran is bc she's a very small girl who's not usually very expressive and doesn't use a lot of words, which is like. A character type that never has any agency and always seems like they're being dragged along by the plot or the main character. But fran has so much more characterisation than that. She's just not very well spoken since she's been a slave for Forever until now. Even before getting free she was determined to become strong and prove that she and her parents and her people are just as good as anyone else and have just as much potential, and she held onto that determination through years of abuse.
And then she gets power from the sword, but right from the start she's doing more than just leaning on it. She's combining skills and standing up for herself and she knows when she should take advice and when she has to ignore it. She doesn't want to be protected, she wants to use her borrowed strength to gain *real* strength that belongs to her. And whenever she's told not to push herself, she defends her decisions. She needs to get stronger, she needs to protect the people she cares about, she needs to defend her people's honour with her own hands instead of letting someone else do her dirty work. She's constantly moving forward and testing her limits and never letting herself be satisfied with anything less than her best efforts and she is such a good girl! And when she loses the sword, yeah she's less powerful, but she refuses to give in and just let herself die without a fight. She's a good character!!
Plus she's a catgirl with a sword.
