"At 7pm, it grew dark, it was then he said, 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya...'"
On November 10th, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, overwhelmed by a violent November storm. About a month afterwards, Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about it, which would explode in popularity, causing the story to be heard by those far outside the region affected by the tragedy. 36 years later, that song was played in my elementary school music class, introducing me to both its artist, and the story behind its existence. 12 years after that, I would use that song and that story to create this series of pieces for a university assignment.
It's been 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. Almost 50 since its song was written. And almost a year since I originally drew these pieces.
Today, I want to share them, and the story behind them, the legacy of this bulk carrier, with you.
