Had a guy call in because he was pissed his ex wife is on foodstamps. He wasn't angry that she needed them, he just had this dumb idea that she should magically not need them after a while for unknowable reasons and was trying to prove she was committing fraud because she needed them for longer than he imagined anyone should.

I had to politely explain that if she didn't qualify under our incredibly thorough regulations and rules and screening process, that she wouldn't be receiving them and if she qualifies it means she needs them.

I'm so tired of people being pissed off that other people need help and that somehow using that help is taking from other people. Its not! The whole point of these government institutiona is to provide help for people who need it! And its my departments job to find the people abusing that system and stop them, but generally the people truly abusing the systems like this tend to be people who are heavily organized crime groups or individuals either omitting something by accident because policy changes all the time, or individuals with actual schemes that do get caught pretty quickly. And guess what those people, barring something in the way, have to pay back the money.l they stole. The amount of people actually deliberately committing FS fraud is infinitesimal compared to the amount of people genuinely benefitting from the organization.

Does it not occur to people that if someone is on foodatamps for a long time it's because the system itself is the broken piece here and not the person? Do they not see that the price of food is horrendous and only getting worse and not recognize that more and more people need foodstamp services because of that?

People are too busy being jealous and angry and don't stop to think that maybe their anger shouldn't be directed at the people closest to them and instead be directed towards widespread policy change to benefit people and thereby eliminating the problem of needing help in the first place.

I saw the penguin parade. It was a very slow parade, because the pingüinos take their sweet time and aren’t very fast walkers to begin with.

I feel like the world needs to know the context of the edinburgh zoo penguin parade, becausr I’ve been going there my entire life and I only found out about this the other year.

So a while back (I can’t remember exactly when but I think it was some time around the 40s/50s), a bunch of penguins escaped. A keeper left the gate open so a bunch of penguins just… followed them. And the people loved it. Look at these adorable birds outside their cage just following that guy around! So they get all the penguins back inside and realise that none of them really ran off, they just followed the keeper and went back inside and crowd thought it was amazing, so why not make it a regular thing? Get enough people there that if one of them goes to make a run for it (which at least one has in the past), they can’t get past the people, and let the ones who want outside have a little wander. So every day, they get a crowd, they open the gate, and whatever penguins want to get out can go, waddle about, squawk at people, and then hop back inside.

Also, one of those penguins is Brigadier Sir Nils Olaf III, Colonel-in-cheif of the Norwegian King’s Guard. This isn’t really related to the parade at all, I just love the fact that there’s a penguin in the Norwegian army

A GOOD POST

A lovely older friend of mine lived in Edinburgh when she was a small child, and regularly attended the penguin parade – as a penguin. That is, she was a small toddler and thus about the right height and speed, and she just waddled along with everyone else who was about 2’ high.

So the answer to ‘can I volunteer to be a penguin’ is at least occasionally ‘yes.’

I've now had a hoodie for them for about a year and can confirm, it is GREAT. Review as an able-bodied person here for usage context. I think of it as my kangaroo hoodie because I'm pretty sure I could fit a whole joey in there (and still have a special inner pocket to keep the joey separate from my phone) (and still have the non-zippered portion for my hands).

Fabric is a VERY sturdy/thick cotton--nice smooth/soft feel. All seams and zippers holding up well, and if you're nursing the top zippers actually work for easy access for that as well. ALSO: if you are a person who hates pulling tight hoodie head holes over your gigantic head, JUST ZIP THAT SUCKER DOWN FIRST, it's awesome.

In conclusion: these are significantly cheaper than my college's hoodies, Imma go check if they have any new styles.
