I mean, seducing the leader of your enemies is a rather rescource efficient way to win a war.

Part 7

Here is a list of who had the position (in order) in the aligned continuity:
1. Shockwave (Megatron’s first choice on Cybertron)
2. Starscream (The Decepticons left Cybertron and Shockwave stayed behind)
3. Knockout (Under Starscream’s brief command as leader)
4. Starscream (Somehow, despite his betrayal)
5. Airachnid (After Starscream left the Decepticons)
6. Dreadwing (After Airachnid betrayed Megatron and she left the Decepticons)
7. Starscream (Megatron picked him over Dreadwing)
8. Starscream and Shockwave (re-united with Shockwave, Megatron chooses to restore his position. Surprisingly, he allows Starscream to remain his lieutenant over military matters)
(Soundwave always remained the communications chief)
Megatron got along best with Shockwave. He was also able to enjoy Airachnid’s company, and had she not betrayed him, he would have kept her over Dreadwing. The choice of Starscream over Dreadwing is the most shocking, but Starscream weaving in and out of the list demonstrates that despite Megatron’s hatred of him, he is still attached to and used to him.
elementary my dear Watson, all of this is based on Starscream’s undeniable and even absurd ability to adapt to his circumstances and survive despite everything the universe throws at him.
