New Intro Post

I’ve been around consistently since April, and I think It’s about time I updated my intro post!

I’m Nightmaricwriter, though I usually use Nightwriter to refer to myself. Others have called my Nightmare and Night, and I don’t mind being called such. Sometimes I try to play into my Nightmare name, but that’s rare. I’m twenty years old and I attend a university, where I’m working to get a Creative Writing Major. You can find me on AO3!

My previous intro post claimed that my writing journey began with original fiction, which… I think is a half truth. I began writing around third grade and it started original but eventually became Warrior Cat fanfiction. Don’t ask how that happened. However, I didn’t truly love writing until a sixth grade assignment in which I had to write a story on a single notebook paper… which turned into a thirty-three notebook paper long story complete with a brief intermission talking about the characters in the middle, I believe. I don’t think I have that story anymore. I’ve been reading obsessively since third grade as well, and you can guess the book series that got me hooked.

I’m a writer. That’s what I am and will always be. With that statement, I have to introduce my writing, don’t I?

Writing

I write fantasy stories. I like the escape that fantasy can bring, and so that is what I write. However, to practice writing, I write fanfiction. I explore character ideas, magic system ideas, even backstory ideas, within fanfiction if I don’t create a character specifically for fanfiction.

Stars of the Sky

My original story, which is my current focus! It is my spin of the idea of names holding power, fantasy, with a magic system my older brother claims is backwards, and a female protagonist who may or may not be a bit too strong at the moment. Hades leaves her Clan to learn more ways to fight as a way to better protect her Clan, which takes her all over Reaki either on missions or to thwart a reversal of an ancient event.

Tags I use for Stars of the Sky

-sots: stars of the sky, which is my tag for official Stars of the Sky posts that are relatively canon.

-sots: world building, which is my tag for posts regarding the general world in Stars of the Sky, such as the naming conventions.

-sots: character information, which is the tag for character information and what I use for ask/tag game responses that have canon or canon compliant information.

-sots: lore, which is the tag for the lore and history of the world in Stars of the Sky.

-sots: setting, which will be used in posts regarding locations in Stars of the Sky.

-sots: shenanigans, which is for when I write something random within the real of Stars of the Sky and wish to share it.

-stars of the sky, which I use for every post regarding Stars of the Sky. My general use tag. The oldest posts of Stars of the Sky have this tag, while the previously mentioned tags are newer implementations.

I have a side blog specifically for Stars of the Sky information! @stars-of-the-sky-nightwriter

I have a Naming Conventions series for this going out!

There’s a collection of Soft Moments in the lives of SotS characters!

A Court of Death and Ruination

This is ACOTAR fanfiction in which I threw Hades, the protagonist of Stars of the Sky into ACOTAR. I explore her abilities, actually writing her, the magic system that is present in Stars of the Sky, and a few other things. Updates every Monday! The master list for this is here!

The main tag for this is

nightwriter: a court of death and ruination, though I also use

nightwriter a court of death and ruination for this. These tags appear on every chapter release as well as posts with information more specific to this, though older posts of this category belong to the tag below.

nightwriter fanfiction is also used for this, but this is my general use tag for fanfiction.

Random Writing Thing

This is me writing a story, but not in the way I normally do it. Each post I put in this is not a full part. It’s just a scene that feels important to the story, but lacks connective tissue between other parts, unless I write the next scene immediately. The posts are, so far, written chronologically, but that may change.

This story is very much a dystopia. It is set vaguely in the midwest, the world has collapsed, there are these monsters that feed on human emotions, and warriors who use their lack of emotions to fight. Each post adds to the worldbuilding, lore, aspects, and such all while following Reave. This story is ever growing and ever expanding.

Honored Mutuals

@bardic-tales has cool world building posts for their (I would use her, but it seems there’s multiple people in that system and I don’t want to offend) Fantasy Worlds Collide work, and they often reblog cool images and posts regarding self shipping and writing, I believe. There’s a lot to be found with them and they are quite the cool mutual to have.

@shepardstales has fun ideas for what she might write, even if she gets writer’s block, and her diamond painting progress is cool to see. Also fun to interact with!

@kingragnarok-writes has a series, The Heralds of Blood (which he posts chapters of weekly (on Sundays)), which I might not look at but it is cool to learn about the background of! He also reblogs writing related posts, cool images for inspiration, and positive posts!

@ominous-faechild is a chaotic gremlin, but also writes things! Most of my interaction with them was them being an art anon. They write a series? Story? called Faerie’s Dawn! Heck if I know when they update.

@keeping-writing-frosty writes interesting things and is fun to interact with! I might not always read his stuff, but that doesn’t mean he writes poorly so check him out.

@of-potions-and-blades-official has a blog dedicated to their wip, Of Potions and Blades. I haven’t poked around at their wip itself, but they reblog things related to writing and I think that’s cool!

@corinneglass is my favorite ghost mutual and I’m always excited to see her around. She’s a ghost only because of Tumblr, but she’s a fun ghost!

Mutuals have their own tagging system now! More for organization than anything else.

Mutuals can request to be added to the shout outs here!

Mutuals are free to dump information (about stories or anything) in my messages!

Those are just a few mutuals and more will be added later.

Hobbies

I write as a hobby, sometimes, but writing is slowly becoming more of just what I do. I read for fun, listen to music for fun, sometimes watch a movie, and I watch anime for fun! A few of the anime I have watched are MHA, Demon Slayer, Haikyuu, Black Butler, Jujutsu Kaisen, a bit of Attack on Titan, Ouran High School Host Club, Nanbaka, and a few others. I also draw sometimes!

Fun Facts

-I am biromantic asexual. Screw the sexual parts of relationships, but I’ll go for both genders :> Due to this, many of my characters are on the queer spectrum since I write what I want and no one can stop me. I might have a poor romantic history but that means nothing.

-I have a terrible sleep schedule. It gets absurd.

-I am slightly autistic. It’s there enough to affect me–screw the sound electricity makes when it is trying and failing to turn something on–but not there enough for me to recognize how it affects me fully.

-There was a Gaza scam. Here are my thoughts from when it was around.

Sleepless has officially crested 40,000 words.

Still hasn't reached the main content of MHA.

Still have a bit more to get through before I even want to dare a time skip.

I'm on Chapter thirteen. So it isn't an easy 2,000 word per chapter thing. I'm kinda enjoying it.

nightmaricwriter

@bardic-tales Chapters I’m excited for your reaction to:

What Ao3 designates as chapter nine but I call chapter eight.

Chapter Ten. Not the Ao3 designated chapter ten but the chapter ten I label as such.

Chapter Eleven.

Chapter twelve is shorter but :>

Thirteen is looking to be so beefy and long but all of it is relaxing stuff if we ignore Endeavor.

All Might is weird to emulate.

Anyway new fanfiction. Has much more than just a prologue. This is the one where my out of context lines came from.

Hope you like Sleepless (and Sleeper/Ayumu)

And we have my least favorite hero--and the only hero I really hate--Endeavor.

I am here! Bombarding you with fanfiction! @bardic-tales

Eraserhead makes a minor appearance woo Dadzawa.

Did I need to post this today? No. Did I? Yes.

Chaos reigns supreme @bardic-tales! I bet you expected only one update today, but alas! I've updated twice!

https://archiveofourown.org/works/77328041/chapters/203046171

A Touya perspective AND Ayumu's hero costume is finally described. All is right in the world.

Okay slight lie about not wanting to post today @bardic-tales I need to keep the streak up because the streak will be forced to fail soon.

Anyway @bardic-tales I continue being chaos and post again today.

Ayumu and Touya move! At least he doesn't have to store collected blood in the fridge.

Aww look @bardic-tales my baby is so sweet and Touya so sweet and Izuku is destined to be a menace

https://archiveofourown.org/works/77328041/chapters/203324801

Trust me Izuku will pick up on the backbends of Saya. And actually train to be strong quirkless since he's surrounded by people who grew up training to be heroes at a quirk disadvantage. And he is a menace with analytical things that I don't want to think about.

nightmaricwriter

@bardic-tales things are picking up :>

Not in this chapter, but next chapter. Tomorrow if I am really determined to keep this streak going. Might be harder for me because I have four classes in a row.

@bardic-tales I know I posted this chapter yesterday but I am counting it for today.

Today's Randomness

@bardic-tales my brain just randomly asked who would win between Ayumu and Sephiroth. I wasn't even doing anything related to Ayumu.

I think it would depend on quirk combinations on Ayumu's part. Only his quirk to work with? He's toast (unless he uses an aspect yet to be seen in the parts on Ao3). I doubt he could even reach Seph's hand considering the massive sword Seph uses. Ayumu is quite durable and fast, and he might be able to take a few blows if they don't hit any vital organs, but that wouldn't guarantee his win. He's strong, but I doubt he can muscle away Seph's sword.

I don't know if his ultimate combination of quirks would give him a chance. He can only use ten at most without pushing Quirk Singularity, as he notes many times in his narration, and six of those would be taken up by All Might's quirk at the very least. If he had Edgeshot's (Foldabody, fold his own body to small, flat sheets) he'd use that. Hawks' wings for speed. So that's eight. Some sort of defensive quirk or healing quirk would be the ninth. He doesn't ever reach ten to avoid the risk of Quirk Singularity. If he doesn't have Edgeshot's, he'd use a regeneration quirk and a defensive quirk.

I don't know enough about Seph's abilities for this to be honest.

(I have no idea what quirks his ultimate combination holds beyond certain specific quirks. He doesn't have Edgeshot's even where I'm at in writing.)

bardic-tales

Most of my own analysis here is based on Sephiroth after his “death”, when he’s operating through the lifestream, his remnants, or metaphysical influence. I think you’re actually approaching this the right way by framing it around conditions rather than raw power, because Ayumu is clearly built with intentional limits and tradeoffs.

If we’re talking about Ayumu operating within his usual constraints—staying under the ten-quirk threshold to avoid Singularity—then Sephiroth likely has the advantage in most scenarios. That isn’t a knock against Ayumu at all. It’s more about the kind of threat Sephiroth represents. He doesn’t just fight as a physically powerful opponent. He operates on a much broader scale, mixing direct combat with battlefield control, psychological pressure, and metaphysical interference. Against someone as disciplined and self-regulated as Ayumu, that kind of multi-layered pressure matters.

Even with a very strong optimized setup—All Might’s quirk, high mobility like Hawks’, Foldabody for evasion, plus regeneration or defense—Ayumu still has to actively manage what he’s prioritizing at any given moment. That’s part of what makes him compelling as a character when I read your fics.

Sephiroth, by contrast, doesn’t really have to make those tradeoffs in the same way, which is where the imbalance comes in. It’s less about Ayumu lacking strength and more about Sephiroth attacking on too many fronts at once.

Where it really shifts, though—and I think you’re completely right about this—is if Ayumu ever crosses his own red line and breaks the ten-quirk limit. At that point, the fight changes dramatically. Ayumu stops having to choose between options and can stack power, survivability, speed, and control in a way that even Sephiroth would have to take seriously. He might not outclass Sephiroth in technique or experience, but he could absolutely overwhelm him through sheer scale and adaptability. It wouldn’t be clean or easy, but it would be possible.

So I’d summarize it like this:

Sephiroth tends to win when the fight is about control and inevitability. Ayumu has a real shot when he allows himself excess and escalation.

As long as Ayumu is playing by his own rules, Sephiroth is a brutal matchup. The moment those rules come off, though, Ayumu becomes the kind of opponent even Sephiroth can’t simply dominate and that’s honestly where the most interesting version of the fight lives.

It'd be an interesting fight for sure. Fandom.com has a nice writeup on Seph's abilities. It IS possible since Cloud has defeated him repeatedly, including killing him initially. But he can be shot and his vessel killed and sent back to the Lifestream, too.

nightmaricwriter

Oo! See the thing with the aspect I withheld from my initial post is that Ayumu can create dream (and nightmare, but he defaults to dream) clones of himself. They are overall weaker than himself, being bound to whatever set of quirks is in whatever blood he gives them, but they also give him multiple “lives”. His main body dies, he wakes up in a clone if there is one (and there always is).

Where this aspect can come into play is, he can give different roles to each clone or clone set. One could defend him, one could mask themselves as him, one could provide healing, etc. I think this could give him a better chance when he’s playing within his rules.

Of course his nightmare clones would be stronger–he’s one of few who he’s seen stronger as a nightmare version than as a dream version simply because his quirk is so vast–and can handle more quirks at once. While his dream clones can handle two, his nightmare clones can handle five. If he uses nightmare clones, if he gives them all his ultimate combination, he could potentially create a situation similar to if he were to overcome Singularity.

It’s just the clones suck his energy when they are all fighting and his main body would fall asleep quite fast. Wouldn’t dispel the clones, but it would stop the creation of more. This is where the 10% sleep drawback happens, btw. He gets none of the energy from the clones putting people to sleep, they don’t get any quirks from doing such, and that is why he doesn’t use this aspect often.

I think if Seph could outlast the wave of clones, it wouldn’t matter much to affect the balance. Of course if this is post-Singularity Ayumu, the clones would only get in his way or slow him down and make it easier. Post-Singularity Ayumu wouldn’t need the clones to have his ultimate combination to replicate him having full access to it.

And post-Singularity Ayumu can’t just happen. He reaches more than ten quirks and he’s out for quite a while. Seph wouldn’t need to kill pre-Singularity Ayumu to win that fight. Even if Ayu’s main body is killed while the process of overcoming Quirk Singularity happens, the process would continue when he transfers to the clone.

(Dying over and over does affect him. He can’t do it infinitely. There’s a limit to that. It’s why he is so careful in his decisions, especially against AFO. Once in a while (like months between deaths) would affect him less than ten times in an hour.)

Go ahead, put me on the spot! Here's my list...

  1. A Good Samaritan Caretaker finding and taking in a stranger whumpee. This also applies to found family.
  2. Whumpee screaming in terror as caretaker holds them.
  3. Caretaker/friend is forced to hurt/fight whumpee.
  4. Whumpee limping/crawling to caretaker who is frantically trying to reach whumpee.
  5. The Whumpee weak or dazed and just fading away (bonus points for frantic caretaker).

Bonus (because I hate choosing)

6. The quite moment where Caretaker is holding Whumpee after all the crying/screaming/wound care is over.

Hard to pick but, off the top of my head:

1. Lab whump, sci fi, monster whump

2. Inexperienced, imperfect caretakers

3. Sickfics, especially with usually-stoic whumpees

4. Long recoveries, whump aftermath

5. Intimate whumpers, psychological whump

2. Long-term captivity whump, esp with multiple whumpees

3. Female whumpees

4. Trauma that is prevalent long after rescue/long recoveries in general + whumpees in recovery taking back their own autonomy/body

5. Multiples caretakers desperately working to save whumpee(s)

Ooooh it's so hard to pick!

  1. Whumpees who "deserve it". Whether they're criminals, villains, or non-human, there's something about them that made the world go "yes, this is an acceptable target. Everything we do is justified." (And then a caretaker who staunchly says, NO, none of this is okay.)
  2. Scar reveal! So many options for how it goes. Did the whumpee intend to reveal these scars, or were they planning to hide as long as possible? Are they embarrassed, or is this their normal? How does the caretaker react?
  3. Team whump! This could be for any role, but I'm gonna focus on team as whumpees. How does the whumper split them up? Does the whumper go for the leader, or do they go for the youngest and make the leader watch? (Or listen?) Does the whumper have a personal connection with one of the team members? Does the situation, and the team members' reactions to it, reveal something about their past that they hadn't shared yet?
  4. Whump with long term consequences. Mental or physical, make it last. Make it still hurt years down the line. How long does whumpee flinch from sounds that remind them of whumper approaching? How much do their old wounds ache every time it rains? Do they still have to fight the instinctive reaction to respond how they were conditioned?
  5. Nightmares. Enough said >:)

Probably Top five would have to be (these will be absolutely no surprise for those who have read my Our Angel :P):

1. This may be a cop-out as it’s kinda like the premise of a lot of my answers underneath but, the paring of phycological and physical whump. Making whumpee feel safe NOWHERE, not in their mind, not in the real world, it’s devastating and totally hooks me in! To see how whumpee does or doesn’t recover and how that reshapes the entirety of their life and relationships EEEK! I love complicated characters you can just psychoanalyze for hours <3

2. Religious whump >:) I am probably extremely biased bc of religious trauma and growing up insanely religious lol but GOD religious whump is great

3. Creepy/intimate Whumpers. Ugh it just makes me squirm- but like it’s so good for bringing complicated emotions into whump and that’s so my thing ><

4. Anything to do with sleep/unconsiousness in whump! Blacking out in the middle of a whump situation- whumpee has no idea what happens when they aren’t conscious, and the mental and phonological toll that takes on whumper is so intense and interesting ><

5. I’m a big fan of Caretaker x Whumpee :) pretty basic but like I love it ><

Do I even write whump? I don’t even know-

And these probably aren’t tropes since I don’t write it specifically. Just things I’ve done.

but I have written stuff where a winged character has his wings ripped off.

Sleepless has a winged character’s wings being forcefully clipped, feathers ripped out, and feathers burned. Was a moment of tossing ice water on someone. Shock collar happened. And someone was forced to watch this wing stuff and the shock collar. Both the winged character and the watcher were restrained.

ACODAR had whipping, drugs (Amarantha drugs Hades with wine), restrained… Rayven was restrained and whipped in her ACOTAR appearance. (restrained in her canon story too… oh…)

I guess I do write whump?

  1. Wing stuff–ripping wings off, clipping them, burning them, ripping feathers out.
  2. Ice water–to a character not dressed for the temperature, especially restrained so they can’t avoid the chill.
  3. shock collar–Collars in general apparently, but this one for characters with animalistic traits.
  4. whipping–my default for ACOTAR fanfiction with Amarantha.
  5. restraints–My characters are usually strong and wouldn’t stand for going through things without fighting back, but keeping them still changes that, doesn’t it?

There the list is. Just the things that I’ve done in multiple stories because that’s how my mind works.

(These could be tropes I dunno I don’t poke around with these things even if I should.)

I want to rant about Chapter Eight of Sleepless and how I love and hate it but honestly I think the best part is I can say that and just... not say why.

Don't worry, @bardic-tales, your spoiler for Chapter Eight is that I expand on a certain someone who Ayumu is shipped with. And we get the whole reason for the "HPSC bashing" and "Corrupt HPSC" tags.

Chapter Three reveals who it is, to an extent. Chapter Four will confirm it. Chapter Five we meet an ollld ancestor. Chapter Six we see what happens when Ayumu sleeps. And I've already hinted at Chapter Seven's nonsense.

But man Chapter Eight has been fun! Totally isn't me messing with you! Totally not!

Kehehehehehahahahaha

:>

nightmaricwriter

MMMM I feel so baaadddddd! I feel so very bad and I haven't even started writing the actual story of MHA! Thirty thousand words in--tenth chapter being written as I type this (as though I have four arms, not ai)--and I feel soooo baaad for what I'm about to do to Ayu! I wish I could say why!

But at least it is a Hawks pov.

nightmaricwriter

@bardic-tales hope you enjoy the sporadic warnings I am giving you when I want to ramble about the story but can't say specifics without spoiling it.

(I hope this akin to poking the beast as much as my taunting/teasing of the Rayven in Demon Slayer ending was. Even more so because you have no clue when I will get to posting these chapters. Sleepless is sporadic. As sporadic as my little warnings.)

bardic-tales

You are absolutely succeeding at being a menace. The structure you’re hinting at across chapters sounds intentional and well-paced, and the fact that you’re enjoying both loving and hating Chapter Eight is usually a good sign. I’m genuinely curious about the reveals, the HPSC angle, and what you’re about to do to Ayumu—even if I know I’m being baited on purpose.

The sporadic warnings are working; consider me interested, teased, and mildly concerned (in the fun way).

nightmaricwriter

Let me retype my previous reblog because I couldn't get the emphasis on a word that I wanted.

Ayumu will definitely be fine. No blood has been spilled at all. He is prancing through a field of flowers in no emotional pain at all.

I hope that properly tells you what is needed to emotionally prepare you.

*villain cackle*

nightmaricwriter

I need to write something lighter. Chapter Ten is definitely heavy. Definitely something. It is the very equivalent of decapitating a character I was looking for! I love and hate it. Hopefully Chapter Eleven doesn't throw chaos in and lets me breathe. Because I need it.

nightmaricwriter

Ah Chapter Eleven... Why do you have a clone of Ayumu and Ayumu watching the clone? Yes this is related to an aspect of Ayumu's quirk that has yet to be fully introduced. It isn't even completely explained at this point, either. It's something that will come up again.

But Chapter Eleven isn't as soft as I want it to be (as though 600 words is enough to reach that softness-)

Not changing it I love it.

nightmaricwriter

Wrote Ayumu waking up to his clone leaning over him. Ayumu was laying on a couch and the clone was at the end of the couch above his head and so their heads were in opposite directions and Ayumu cups his clones cheeks and it was so sweet but then the clone dies. And yes, Ayumu slept because of his quirk.

Quirk drawback to 90% of his quirk: not sleeping. Drawback to the other 10%? Him being forced to sleep. Very fun.

@bardic-tales I'll let you have this chapter Eleven spoiler. I almost want to draw it but I can't be bothered right now.

bardic-tales

You know, I love this quick drawback. And if you ever feel like drawing it, you know where I am. Right here to be tagged. 😂

Chapter Eleven is half Ayumu watching himself on TV (working with his personal number one hero) and half him dealing with the aftermath of having an active clone and I love it for him.

Chapter Twelve is... how should I put it... Dark! Maybe.

I need to practice drawing quite a bit before drawing the scene. Hair, mostly, because Ayumu's clone retains his long hair and that is likely all a side view will show kehehehe.

I just had an idea that would curse me if I did it. A little comic of Ayumu waking up, reaching up, brushing hair aside from his clone's face, cupping his clone's cheek, the clone dying... It seems like a peaceful little scene. Mmmmmm how dare I come up with this-

Chapter Thirteen has some casual flirting not intended as flirting and I love it. (I don't write romance or flirt so I have no idea if the flirting is even flirting at all)

Maybe it's just Ayumu being a menace.

Sleepless is shaping up to be longer than Acodar. Remember that? The 59,000 word fanfiction? Yeah at the rate Sleepless is going, it will be over that word count. Even if I time skip a few years to reach the events of MHA (that we still haven’t reached, going by Hawks’ age), I’ll be writing thousands of words to encompass that timeline since AFO being beat is such an important thing to his character.

Today’s Randomness

@bardic-tales my brain just randomly asked who would win between Ayumu and Sephiroth. I wasn’t even doing anything related to Ayumu.

I think it would depend on quirk combinations on Ayumu’s part. Only his quirk to work with? He’s toast (unless he uses an aspect yet to be seen in the parts on Ao3). I doubt he could even reach Seph’s hand considering the massive sword Seph uses. Ayumu is quite durable and fast, and he might be able to take a few blows if they don’t hit any vital organs, but that wouldn’t guarantee his win. He’s strong, but I doubt he can muscle away Seph’s sword.

I don’t know if his ultimate combination of quirks would give him a chance. He can only use ten at most without pushing Quirk Singularity, as he notes many times in his narration, and six of those would be taken up by All Might’s quirk at the very least. If he had Edgeshot’s (Foldabody, fold his own body to small, flat sheets) he’d use that. Hawks’ wings for speed. So that’s eight. Some sort of defensive quirk or healing quirk would be the ninth. He doesn’t ever reach ten to avoid the risk of Quirk Singularity. If he doesn’t have Edgeshot’s, he’d use a regeneration quirk and a defensive quirk.

I don’t know enough about Seph’s abilities for this to be honest.

(I have no idea what quirks his ultimate combination holds beyond certain specific quirks. He doesn’t have Edgeshot’s even where I’m at in writing.)

:>

MMMM I feel so baaadddddd! I feel so very bad and I haven't even started writing the actual story of MHA! Thirty thousand words in--tenth chapter being written as I type this (as though I have four arms, not ai)--and I feel soooo baaad for what I'm about to do to Ayu! I wish I could say why!

But at least it is a Hawks pov.

Very fun.
