Though I have been known to write it on occasion, DBDa AUs always feel a little Wrong when Charles doesn't instantaneously latch onto Edwin and pronounce his eternal intention to follow him around everywhere he goes like a dog with so much separation anxiety it won't let you pee without scratching holes in the door

And in most cases the reasoning is pretty clear: 'in this universe it doesn't make sense for Charles to ditch everything and start following Edwin around, he's got other shit to do and also that would not be Socially Acceptable'

But the thing is I cannot emphasize enough how completely it does not make sense for Charles to do that in canon. We're blind to it because that's the way they were presented to us so it feels like it's normal but this is INSANE BEHAVIOR to the degree that it's basically breaking the metaphysical laws of the universe - like even aside from that he's not supposed to do it he basically just declared himself to have indefinitely unfinished business (chilling with his new BFF) which is? Not a thing?? How did he get the ghost rules to accept that???

He HAS shit to do. (An entire Heaven's worth of it. Or even going and haunting people, if he feels like being a ghost.) This is NOT normal. This is NOT socially acceptable or, according to the laws of the afterlife, even legal. It's barely even possible.

Charles is acting absolutely batshit in canon when he declares his intention to ditch Absolutely Everything in order to follow Edwin around and he deserves to carry that same energy into AUs

Tiger found caged in abandoned home gets second chance at wildlife sanctuary: ‘He seems to be so happy’

The estimated 350-pound tiger was transported to the facility, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, on Wednesday afternoon, and is settling in well, Almrud said. There, he will have the chance to roam in enclosures of up to three acres.

Almrud, who estimates him to be about 2 years old, described the moment he first walked onto the grass at the sanctuary as remarkable.

“It was just amazing to see him walk out on grass and to see him explore and have that freedom of movement,” she said. “It was just such a reward and fulfilling to us.”

Now, he spends his days rolling around the grass in glee, Almrud said.

“He comes right up to the fence every time a staff member is present,” she said. “He seems very amenable to our presence.”

The tiger is eating well – a combination of chicken, humanely raised non-processed beef and whole prey complete with organs and bones. It appears that he was being fed chicken, which is what owners of exotic cats often feed them, but chicken alone does not provide the complete nutrition they need to thrive, Almrud said.

In addition, caregivers are tasked with keeping the tiger mentally stimulated by creating “pretend hunting” games and rotating him through different areas so he has access to new smells and environments to explore.

“He seems to happy and content,” Almrud said. “Our staff is just falling in love with him.”

The Candles Blew and Then Disappeared

Chapter three \ a year, a candle, a joint breath

The night Edwin Payne didn’t die, a candle burned.

Or,

A year after leaving behind her previous life of beautifully dangerous boys and disappointed distant parents, Crystal meets a boy digging up bones in the cemetery. As Halloween approaches, the veil between worlds draws thinner, and a mystery begins to unfold.

Crystal leaned in towards him. When she spoke, her voice was careful. “What are you saying?”

“There’s a reason I came here today without Charles,” Edwin told her.

“Because he’s at work?”

It wasn’t really funny. Edwin didn't even roll his eyes. “You have to sacrifice my soul. I think we’ve already concluded, as a group, that there is nothing else we can do.” He sighed, and looked between the two psychics with resignation. “This all started with me. It makes sense.”

“But it wasn’t your fault,” Crystal said.

“It still needs to be done,” Edwin responded. “We don’t have that long.”

This time they sat in silence until the music faded into nothingness. The noise that remained was the buzzing in the air that accompanied their breaths, suffocating and stale. Comforting, in a way, too.

“I came to apologise,” Edwin spoke again. “And to ask that… that you don’t tell Charles. He wouldn’t let me go through with it.”

Crystal couldn’t seem to settle on one emotion. In the end, it was something like disbelief. “You want me to sacrifice you to a demon behind his back?”

“I know it’s a lot to ask.”

“Yeah, no kidding.”

The thing is that the dynamic between John and James does sound genuinely fascinating from the glimpses we get of it.

John says that James was always better at (social) stuff. James did go out and become a police officer, marry Lucy, and just generally have more of a "normal" life, but it's clear that Lucy thinks John and James *aren't* as dissimilar as John believes. James may have been better at masking, but he clearly didn't have an easy ride either. Still, John is envious of his brother and feels like James is what he *could* have been if he'd been able to venture out into the world. The fact that both brothers had crushes on Lucy only serves to hammer that in.

On the other hand, John is an incredibly successful puzzle solver and spending most of his life in his house in no way detracts from that. The murders he solves appear to be beyond the capabilities of James going by the reactions of everyone else. There's an argument to be had about how much is difference in solving vs being tied in by procedure and social niceties, but either way, John gets accurate results much faster than James ever did. Even if John does very much ignore behavioural factors as he attempts to simplify each crime scene to a "puzzle to be solved".

There's also something to be said for how James' coworkers didn't clock he had been replaced. How none of them even knew he *had* a twin brother. Obviously, there's an element of it being down to the writing in that the game couldn't be given away too quickly, but it does speak of a more distant relationship with his coworkers (perhaps aside from his former partner). And there's the voicemail where James says (though given the context, this can't be taken as 100% true) that he was the one most like their father, in his choice to run away. It was a hint to John, but it only worked as such because they had so little that tied them together in the first place. They grew up together, shared their childhood, and yet, they hadn't spoken in years. Makes me wonder how much of it was neither wanting to be the first to reach out. On John's side that makes total sense (James is the "social successful" one, after all) but James' side is much more a mystery (though, "they're more alike than they seem" comes to mind).

Of course, both of them were impacted by their father leaving as he did. It's spelled out several times that John and James reacted differently. John turning inwards (only pushed further by his bullies and discovering his love of puzzles) whilst James focused outwards (to become more socially successful). But we find that John doesn't want to lose the social aspects once he's found a place for himself. That James is able to go almost entirely non-contact with his family despite knowing the impact his own father had on his family. The one stuck in his house ventures out as the one surrounded by family escapes it all.

All in all, John and James are pretty interesting characters even if we only know one of them secondhand.

*However*, when we actually *see* James in person, my main thought is "that's a second David Mitchell"

hey do you want to see something COOL?

this is ludwig (bbc). this is deaf actress and strictly winner 2021 rose ayling-ellis. this is a deaf character BEING GIVEN AN INTERPRETER RATHER THAN BEING EXPECTED TO LIPREAD IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING!!!! i particularly love the part at the end where she looks to the interpreter before answering the question - the name has to be spelled for her to know who he’s talking about. rose uses interpreters in real life, and it’s so cool to see a character she plays use one on tv!!!
