Call me Rocky. She/her, early 40s, cringe af. In the GO fandom and whatever else catches my eye. There Will Be Crafts. Avi is “Baroque Witch #2” by Heikala. I do reblog nudes so no minors please

New pinned

If you have followed me for the wastewater post, I am sorry that’s pretty much my only post on the topic

If you have followed me for the block-long pocket farm post, I do post about sustainability sometimes but also a lot of other stuff

If you have followed me because I reblog a lot of fiber arts content, prepare yourself for the random shitposts and queer content as well.

This blog does not tolerate TERFs. I will not debate you, I will not score woke points off of you, I will not give you chances to redeem yourself, I will simply and silently block you and continue my day unbothered, in my lane, and flourishing. Trans rights are human rights. Trans women’s rights are women’s rights. I, a cis woman, quite literally cannot have rights if you remove them from my trans sisters. Some of you know this and that’s why you’re radfems. The rest of you need to go to therapy until you learn to stop taking your trauma and bullying impulses out on random women in your vicinity. Learn to live with the idea that there are women out there who make you uncomfortable. As someone who often is one of those women, I’d certainly fucking appreciate it.

Yknow what I LOVE about the Star Trek fandom? It’s ANCIENT. I had a talk with a nice old lady at the old persons home that my great grandma is in and she noticed my Spock shirt and was like “oh I love that show I thought the premise was lovely” and you all know THE PREMISE is trekspeak for spirk and I was like “do you accept the premise because I do” and she looked at me with the eyes of someone who is reliving their otp moments and she said “the premise is all I wrote about, dear” and we just talked about spirk for a hella long time and I just love how age doesn’t matter in this fandom you can be ninety and still be the biggest spirk bitch ever how rad is that

I was today years old when I learned that particular euphemism

I was also today years old. Fandom codes man

Reblogging to spread knowledge about the Premise, because I absolutely love that bit of fandom, and I want to make sure that it survives. (and yay to everyone who is part of today’s 10,000!)

This makes me so happy

i love those gimmick blogs that go around translating shitposts into different languages. gotta be one of my favorite tumblr things. like heck yeah spread the shitposts around in all languages.

dwi wrth fy modd gyda'r blogiau gimig sy'n mynd rownd yn cyfieithu postiadau rwtsh i mewn i wahanol ieithoedd. siŵr o fod yn un o fy hoff bethau ar tumblr. fel ewch amdani rhannwch y postiadau rwtsh ym mhob iaith.

i dunno how to phrase this without sounding like a jerk but sometimes the conversation surrounding marginalised cultures in europe does take on this weird tone of "well, they're white, so it's not really erasure or genocide or imperialism" because to some people it's only Imperialism when it's The British Empire doing it to Those Stupid Brown (slur) (slur) (slur)

like, there's genuinely no way not to sound kind of like an arsehole about this, but: when i'm talking about marginalised languages which have been driven to the point of extinction in europe, i don't particularly want people to come along saying "oh, and let's also pay attention to these non-european languages which are even more likely to be forgotten!" because that is, for once, not true. in some european countries linguistic imperialism is, if anything, being talked about less than other continents. maybe it's just because i've mostly studied the histories of french and english, but how many people out there even know that scots is a language in its own right and not a dialect? we absolutely need more space to talk about indigenous languages across the world which have been wiped out, erased, or suppressed by colonialism; we absolutely need to work on centring and revitalising them. but, you know, the same is true worldwide. the state of linguistic diversity in europe is fucking dire.

I do really think a lot of this is because otherwise people have to consider stuff like, to take a local example I am familiar with, the involvement of Irish soldiers in the Waikato war, at a time when Ireland was being actively colonised and the Irish language suppressed by the English, and acknowledge that it is impossible to neatly divide the world into the Good Cultures (colonised) and the Bad Cultures (colonisers). And a lot of people don't want to think about that!

why is it able to instantly liquify a bay leaf but struggles with garlic 😭

it’s fine—I turned it off and started trying to fish out the bay leaf bits with a fork

okay actually though. How bad is it really to have bay leaf in there?? looking it up

Okay so it’s Not Ideal but I’m just gonna blend it more and Deal With It

I’m giving the swiffer a 4/10 rating for its ability to clean ceilings btw

So the laser cut box loom from this post is now sitting with glue on it.

I do not like glueing, we are hoping it has been done right, and now I get to do other things before going through and sanding/rasping edges to be what I would like them to be.

After that it is find a primer, paint it with acrylics, then sealer!

Loom design is from here.

Glued, sanded, ready for primer. Which is tomorrow's adventure, after tattoo.

Primer done! Time to design and paint.

All base coats are painted! Next are the embellishing designs.

Slowly but surely we get medieval marginalia decorations. It is going to be a mishmash and I am loving it in all the horrendous beauty.

Landscape Process

I got some request for my process with backgrounds after the Onsen, so this will be a step-by-step-ish doumentation for an American Southwest landscape.

  1. BIG. ASS. CANVAS. like at least one side should be 5000 pixels
  2. Get a shitload of references:

Yeah 42 is enough

3. Rifle through them and sort into ones that feel related to you, or have elements you want to collage together. Make a note of this part on the tumblr post to explain where the fuck you are for the next 6-10 hours.

4. Or, uh. Seventeen minutes. Kinda slapped and scaled them in approximately the size and location I want them.

5. Now I'm gonna spend an outrageous amount of time isolating the exact thing I want from these references and Paper-dolling theminto place

Side note: You want to keep all the references from as close to the same perspective as possible. This is a pretty flat front-on angle so that's not hard but something on a hill is a BITCH.

6. Okay, now I have everything in approximately the size and location I think I want it to be. All the pieces are on different layers, so I'm going to sketch the individual layers and tweak them into place and sorta quilt them together into a coherent Outline. These are totally real technical terms.

7. This outlining art Takes A While (TM). 3 hours in so far.

It's worth it tho, not because I'm using the outline as much in the final composition, but this intensely studied loutline helps me get REALLY familiar with the shapes of everything, which is REALLY important when I pick out my Light Source, because I'm going to have to wholesale invent the shading.

Six hours of Linework in!! Stopping for the night so my hand remains functional :)

Took most of the day off on my hand, but another 4 hours and the Linework is DONE. (you know, except for the zillion edits I'm going to make while I'm working on it but hey)

Since The Onsen piece used a lot of very cool, dark, and desaturated colors, I've decided to use a lot of warm, high-key and very saturated colors in this piece.

Now, those are THE most saturated versions of the hues I want to use, and they're there mostly for me to Eyedropper and pick tints/shades from on the color wheel, but a few notes:

The foliage is going to be orange in the foreground, then getting redder as it goes into the Background, and finally pink on the far mountains. this is because while this is some Bizarro Alien dreamscape, colors in the distance will be bluer because blue light gets scattered the least as it approached your eye.

Similarly, this will have the shadows done all in one color (A very dark blue-purple on low opacity) because this a day scene, and the sunlight is the same all over, so the shadows will be approximately the same color as well.

The Onsen had two different-colored lightsources, which was really fun, but for daylight, you tend to only have The One Bid Solar Light Source, and because it's full-spectrum, the highlights are more or less invisible and you see it through the shadows, if that sentence makes any sense at all.

Bonus Pro tip: Label all your layers.

Step IDK 9? 10?

Once you have a palette concept, go right ahead and slather that shit on as a Proof-Of-Concept:

So this is no where near the actual saturation or value the final piece will be, but its go for deciding what elements are going to be what colors, which I had a pretty good Idea of, but I actually ended up moving the plant colors around a whole bunch. The Fortress definitely needs to be broken up more, as well as making clearer distinctions on the cliff about what is a shaded surface vs a stained one. Once again, I'm going to let it rest overnight to give my hand a break and let mt subconscious make suggestions.

11. Next bit is to reduce the saturation on the rough and zoom in on one section to refine the colors. It's a bit like filling in a coloring book.

WELCOEM TO MY FUCK HOUSE

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

this post is still good even without the glitch that’s how good this post is

for those who forgot about the hellhole that was the 2015 tumblr glitch:

it’s been 10 years since WELCOEM TO MY FUCK HOUSE

String identified: C T C AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA t t t g tt t gtc tat’ g t t t gt at t tat a t t gtc: t’ a c C T C

Closest match: Lymnocryptes minimus genome assembly, chromosome: 21 Common name: Jack Snipe

there’s an elder leatherman and leather worker in my neighborhood who does alterations on some of my stuff for me and every time I call him on the telephone we have the exact same exchange

- I tell him what I need done

- “you know that’s going to be a really big project, it’s actually quite complicated”

- quotes me an exceedingly reasonable price

- tells me to think on it (regardless of me insisting it’s fine), but he “won’t be waiting by the phone for me to call” and hangs up on me

- I wait 1 hour and then call him back

- tells me he’s been thinking about the project since I called and actually has some other ideas for making it work

- “okay how’s about tomorrow at 4? you can walk over to my house and I can take a look at it”

to set the scene, the living room of his home is his workshop. along two sides of the room are all his different machines and tools, the other has open shelves packed to the ceiling with hides. a big workbench fills the center of the room.

- he inspects the thrifted piece I’ve brought for him to alter and tells me it’s terrible

- scolds me for not having him make me something from scratch

- the entire time he’s doing measurements and starting to trim/do the initial fittings, he reiterates (in a truly exasperated manner) what a big project this is

- I sit perched on a stool in the corner while he works

- sometimes while he works he mumbles things about the last 60 years of his career as a leather worker

- inevitably charges me less than he quoted me

- sends me on my way with a few scrap pieces of leather for projects that I’m toying with

I’m very fond of him, in many ways he reminds me of my grandpa, who was a master craftsman woodworker and made some of my furniture. there’s something comforting about his grumpiness.

he was absolutely BEAMING when I came to pick up my chaps. ugh I’m obsessed with his work it’s so seamless and beautiful

So when I was getting dressed today, I very quickly put on a lab coat and some cat ears, not even trying to have something coherent, just wanting to have some kind of costume, and then I used some eyeliner to draw some whiskers on my face, so, yeah, that's my costume, cat in a lab coat, does it make sense? no. who cares. Still wearing the same skirt and striped knee-high socks from yesterday, but that's just my work clothes.

But then when I got to my office in the physics department, one of my colleagues was immediately like, "Oh! Schrödinger's catgirl!"

It both was and was not a coherent costume until someone observed you and collapsed the wave form.
