Imagine Alastor, Tiana and Hazel all meeting each other.

Here me out, they are all from 1930s New Orleans, all alive at the same time, they all also happen to have ties to voodoo.

It would be so sweet to see them interacting - a famed radio host (and serial killer), a restaurant owner/chef and a kind little kid with a penchant of finding gems.

Alternatively: Hazel giving Alastor and Tiana a gem each, cuts to next day– Alastor dead and Tiana’s a frog.

An entry to writing competion from last year, now its over I can post it. The prompt was soulmates, with my piece being based on my experience of being asexual/aromantic in a society obsessed with soulmates.

The two colours show two things: the black represents what is chosen to be recorded by society; and the red is an anecdotal counterpart from somebody ‘scribbling in the margins’, a protest, a disturbance to this narrative. As such the black by itself is coherent unlike the red.

Soulmates Why?

Soulmates are a worldly concept, yet so very sacred. Grand and mystical like stories of the weather being controlled by ancient gods.

They say that humans started as strange beings – unrecognisable today, with double the limbs humans currently possess. These beings were said to be far too powerful, so they had to be split in two, creating soulmates.

Yet humans are truly futile and pathetic things, if a lack of love is so damaging to one’s reputation.

The two parts, a man and a woman, now and forever will spend their lives, every single life searching for their other half.

A man and a woman. Always a man and a woman. What of those who love the same as them? What does that mean for their souls? I do not love a man, nor a woman. What does that mean for my soul? Is it broken? Damaged?
