New interview: Netflix’s live-action ATLA is “a stunning spectacle” of “eye candy matched with impeccable storytelling” that “hasn’t been done on TV before”

In a new interview from Variety, Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Peter Friedlander gave us an exciting new update on ATLA!

They’re deep in the nitty gritty of post-production right now, so official updates are rare and that makes this all the more hypeworthy. Check out the full quote below!

Variety: I’m a big “Avatar: The Last Airbender” fan and I’ve been waiting years for your version. Are we getting close to seeing something from the Netflix adaptation soon? I just want a first look.

Peter Friedlander: I think it’s going to be what you want it to be. It’s pretty special, just as an IP, it’s very special, something like “The Sandman,” and we want to handle it with deft hands for fans and to also bring new life to it in a way that both honors the original and celebrates its new iteration. It’s a stunning spectacle.

These shows are very big productions and it takes a ton of time, both on the production side and in post, so you have to respect the long journey for some of these shows to deliver what hasn’t been done on television before. And that’s what we have for a lot of these types of shows when we’re working on them, whether it’s “Avatar” or “One Piece” or “Three-Body Problem,” these are big, visual spectacles that you have to honor the process and respect that, when you’re breaking ground in visual storytelling or you’re on the visual vanguard of storytelling, that takes R&D, that takes a lot of trial and error to get it right. But that’s the intent, that’s the hope, is that you’re bringing eye candy matched with impeccable storytelling into these worlds. The journeys are long, but hopefully fruitful. Being part of these spectacle shows, each one is bespoke, each one goes on its own journey and it’s a little bit in between film and television, so you have to break the mold every time you’re working on one of them and it’s rewarding across the board when we get it right.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season One premieres on Netflix globally in 2023.

Exclusive: Avatar Studios’ slate will consist of a new animated movie AND show debuting every year starting in 2025, including the adult Gaang movie and new earth Avatar show in 2025, and the now RE-CONFIRMED ZUKO MOVIE and KYOSHI MOVIE, both now UNDATED

Here’s the followup to yesterday’s big news that a new animated series following the next earth Avatar after Aang & Korra is coming in 2025.

Today, we can provide a more complete picture of the long-term animated slate and some specific updates to previous projects we reported on.

First: the big picture. Starting in 2025, Avatar Studios will release an animated movie to theaters AND an animated show on Paramount+ every year.

The current animated slate is concretely planned to cover the first three years (2025-2027) but there are more projects than slots in development so it will likely continue beyond that as well if the franchise is as successful as we all obviously hope it is, which we’ll get to.

Here’s an idea of what I’m talking about:

2025

  • Animated movie: adult Gaang - 10.10.2025
  • Animated show: next earth Avatar

2026

  • Animated movie
  • Animated show

2027

  • Animated movie
  • Animated show

This is the exact information I have right now from Paramount, what I don’t know is whether the shows will be cumulative, i.e. whether 2026 will have Season 2 of the earth Avatar show AND Season 1 of the 2026 show. I do know that the 2025 show and 2026 show are two different things, so either the 2025 earth Avatar show will be a one-year limited series, or 2026 will have both and 2027 will potentially have all three. (I will say the 2026 show is NOT a mainline entry in the franchise. Bryke said they were exploring different mediums, styles, audiences, and this one is more of a side thing, so I’m personally guessing the earth Avatar show will continue, but that’s just my guess. I haven’t been given permission to share any of the 2026 or 2027 shows/movies yet.)

Onto some more specific things I can share…

The Zuko movie still exists and is separate from the adult Gaang movie

So glad I could finally sort this one out. For a long time it’s been unclear whether the “project with a Zuko-focused story” and the adult Gaang movie were the same thing or not. I can now say that the newest info I’ve gotten from Paramount is that they’re two separate movies. It’s fairly safe to assume that the Zuko movie is still second in the slate, meaning 2026, but without 100% hard evidence I’m gonna call it undated for now, which in this case means maybe 2026, maybe 2027, maybe post-2027.

The Kyoshi movie still exists and is now undated

So we arrive at the big confusion, which I will address in depth below. 😂 But first I wanted to say that based on new info shared with me, a Kyoshi movie definitely was one of the earlier projects in the works earlier this year. Based on the wider picture of the slate I have now, it seems that it has been delayed to outside of the first-three-years slate and is now undated, which in this case means actually undated and post-2027.

(Source for Kyoshi movie *update*: DanielRPK)

(I haven’t heard anything new about Korra stuff in a while so I don’t have an *update*, but I strongly assume she’ll still have movies and/or shows at some point post-2025.)

So there you have it! We now know the cadence of Avatar Studios’ slate is one movie and show per year, and we know both the movie and show for the first year. We also know some of the other projects without certain dates yet.

If you’re just here for the news, that’s what I got for you today. If you’re interested in a long, super nitty-gritty explanation of the whole “Kyoshi movie first” mistake from earlier this year, a mystery I mercifully FINALLY solved thanks to yesterday’s and today’s news, read on!

Dante Basco will return to voice Fire Lord Zuko as an adult in the untitled animated adult Gaang movie coming to theaters on 10.10.2025!

It’s so exciting to be making a casting post for a new project so soon and who it’s for is even more exciting!

Dante Basco, the voice of young Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008), is returning to voice adult Fire Lord Zuko in the upcoming untitled animated adult Gaang movie (say that 5 times fast) coming to theaters from Avatar Studios in 2025!

Dante also previously voiced Zuko’s grandson Iroh II in The Legend of Korra (2012-2014), and you may also know him from his iconic role of Rufio in the 1991 movie Hook.

Of course, we didn’t forget about the rest of the Gaang…

A global casting call for Asian & Indigenous voice actors in their 20s is going out to find the adult voices of the Gaang!

Specifically, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph are currently being sought out, with Zuko already being found as we mentioned above, and Dante is officially attached to the movie.

They’re looking for Asian actors for Aang and Toph and Indigenous actors for Katara and Sokka (that’s not an exact quote, just the idea relayed to me), matching the characters’ cultural inspirations and the live-action casting process from across 2021-2022. All the roles are for the 20s age range, which matches up with our exclusive report that the Gaang would be young adults in the movie, and the exact in-universe year the movie takes place in which we’re not allowed to reveal yet.

Speaking of live action, I want to specify again that this is VOICE casting for ANIMATION, separate from the live-action casting for the live-action series. There will be a lot of characters overlapping but as far as I know right now they should be different time periods, for example Dallas Liu was cast as YOUNG Zuko in live-action while Dante Basco was cast as the voice of ADULT Zuko in animation. (Also speaking of them, did you know Dante mentored Dallas on playing Zuko?)

I can already see this getting confusing, so I thought about doing black backgrounds for voice roles or something but I decided against differentiating them too much– at the end of the day it’s all acting and vital to the creation of the world of Avatar! I settled on putting that “voice role” label on the voice actor’s photo to hopefully avoid confusion because while Dante also visually looks like he could be Zuko, all the voice actors won’t necessarily physically look like their characters (I believe for example they just have to sound like they’re in their 20s, not strictly be in their 20s themselves). We actually already had two voice roles cast: George Takei as Koh and Randall Duk Kim as Wan Shi Tong, both voicing non-humanoid spirits in the live-action series.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that while these casting calls are specifically for the 2025 adult Gaang movie, I presume the actors will be the new voices for the characters at these ages across Avatar Studios’ whole animated universe. Specifically of relevance is the Zuko movie. Right now I have no idea what time period it’s set in, but if it’s also when Zuko and the Gaang are approx. in their 20s then it’s likely it would be the same voice cast!

But yeah, this definitely feels like deja vu. It feels like just yesterday I was posting the live-action casting calls for the young Gaang. 🥹 They grow up so fast… 😂 Jokes aside, I also want to mention ***I DON’T have insider connections for the casting process this time, so don’t ask me where/how to apply or anything like that because I don’t know.***

Today’s news comes from Avatar Studios’ closed casting process via DanielRPK, thank you for the major reveal dude!
