I feel like it would be useful if people conceived of causing emotional harm to others more through the lens of being the emotional equivalent to stepping on someone’s foot. Like obviously you can step on someone’s foot deliberately and maliciously, but most of the time if someone tells you you stepped on their foot you’re going to go “oh sorry I didn’t realise!” and stop doing it and try not to do it again. Getting caught up in how it makes you feel to be Someone Capable of Stepping on Others’ Feet would be a transparently self indulgent distraction from the other person’s pain, but also like… that’s just a status you hold by virtue of being human. Never ever ever stepping on someone’s foot is not really achievable, and therefore is not necessary to being a Good Person: what matters is that you do not step on others’ feet deliberately, and – most importantly – that you react kindly and calmly to any inadvertent foot-stepping you have been doing being brought to your attention, so that you can make best use of it as something that will help you reduce the amount of foot-stepping you will do in the future.

crazy how you can get used to working around problems that have very easy fixes. for like 6 months we used a hand towel to jam a kitchen cabinet closed because the hinges were broken and it turns out fixing it took me like $5 and 20 minutes. bedroom door has been squeaky for years and all it needed was a lil wd40. im sure this can apply to mental health too but i wouldnt know about all that.

my kitty cat was wandering around going ‘mrrph?” so i was like “in here!” he goes “mrrph!” shoves open my bedroom door with his big round head and FLOPS on me. as in hard enough that he made a little “oof” noise when he did it. followed by a category five purring event. there’s good in this world mr frodo etc

A reminder for writers writing Deaf characters:

Your Deaf character does not have to lose their hearing in a horrificly traumatic way, like a car accident, explosion, etc.

Most Deaf people have lost their hearing due to genetic factors, infections, ear infections, medications, medication overdoses, head injuries, and birth complications. A lot of this happened early on in life.

Having your Deaf character be fluent in ASL for the sake of being fluent yet having no exposure to the Deaf community and no one to sign with or who taught them doesn't make sense.

Keep in mind that a Deaf person who lost their hearing later vs lost their hearing young will have differerent life experiences; Deaf experience varies greatly.

Finally, just because your Deaf character is Deaf, it doesn't mean their life is miserable, pointless, unfullfilling, depressing, and only traumatic.

Deaf people have a rich history, culture, language. Many Deaf people don't consider themselves disabled and often consider it a language barrier (though this varies from person to person).

When you write a Deaf character, please do research and not just make their life what you think the Deaf experience is. Don't make a Deaf character's life just miserable because you like writing traumatized characters.

MINOR EDIT: ASL is also NOT a universal language. Sign language is different around the world and it defuses differently than English (since sign isn't visual English). For my post, I said ASL since I'm not knowledgeable about Deaf culture or sign language in other countries!

Just something I really want to share on here because it’s important.

this is really important to remember, even if you said something stupid and don’t feel like repeating it- it can still feel isolating to folks with hearing and auditory processing problems!

Image Description: Twitter Post from @ saltysurvivors,

Image 1: Them: *says something that I can’t hear* Me: sorry, I’m partially deaf, can you repeat that? Them: Never mind, it didn’t matter. Me: [Reaction pic of a white dog with teary eyes edited onto them]
Image 2: Continuation of thread. Although no one intends it this way, when they say “never mind” it feels like they are saying you dont deserve to be in the conversation. When they say “it doesn’t matter” it feels like they’re saying that you don’t matter.
Dear hearing people, please be patient with us. I know it’s frustrating having to repeat what you said but imagine how much more frustrating it is for that deaf/ hoh person working 2x as hard and straining their ears for something you can do with ease.
Image 3: Continuation of thread. Hey everyone, this thread is inclusive of ppl with audio processing disorder, ADHD, ADD, autism, anything else that makes it hard to hear and tune into conversations.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

gonna show people my authentic self soon. just as soon as I get it perfect. soon. any day now I'll be good enough to open up to others

procedures

[ID: Three panel comic with crudely drawn stick people.

Panel 1: A grayscale stick person wearing an oversized t-shirt featuring a flag with red, green, blue and black stripes is looking down and talking.

Pseudoally: "I want you all to know that you are still valid in the confinement pit. You have my support. I will write strongly worded letters about the need for air conditioning in the pit."

From the pit: "There's a ladder right next to you!"

Panel 2: The view switches to showing the pit from above, ladder and all. The pit contains a variety of chromatic people, including a small one with a mint green propeller hat and one with animal ears.

Pseudoally: "Look, I know it looks simple for me to just take this ladder and pass it down into the pit. But there are procedures here."

An orange square-headed person: "It is simple!"

Pseudoally: "No because you see, ladder allocation has to be done through the system. Properly."

A dark blue person with lime green legs: "They dug the pit without even caring about the system!"

Panel 3: The pseudoally pontificates from on high while the orange person watches in the foreground. A moss green person wearing a bandana and a pink person with a light blue jacket and bright orange, triangular anime glasses are passing a ladder down into the pit.

Pseudoally: "Look, I really wish there was something I could do but- hey what are you doing?"

Moss Green: "Helping."

Pseudoally: "I don't think extreme methods like this are good for the movement!"

Anime Glasses: "We don't give a shit. Step aside."

End ID.]

“this post contains mature content” it’s picture of a classical nude. it’s a photorealistic painting of someone’s hands. it’s a gifset of a kpop idol smiling. it’s a moodboard featuring someone’s bare shoulder. it’s a film still of a non-graphic bloodstain. it’s a photograph of a non-white girl sitting on a counter wearing a short skirt. it’s a meta about how sexuality is depicted in a tv show. do you see what’s happening here. the vilification of the body. the sanitizing of violence. the whitewashing of presentation. i hate it i hate it so much
