I actually hate when people bring up the incest plot in season 6 because I feel 6/10 times my understanding is too far from theirs.

The therapist in charge of her recovery gaslighted Debra into thinking she was in love with Dexter. Period.

They did love each others fraternally, more than a lot of brother and sisters on tv. Their bond was stronger because not only they were (adult) orphans but also each other’s only family since there are no mention of grandparents or cousins in their lives. They barely had friends outside of work too.

During childhood, Harry was neglecting Debra in favor of Dexter. So actually, she didn’t have a big relationship with either her father or sibling growing up though they still cared for each other’s. Harry gave her daddy issues by making her feel less valued.

Literally as soon as she could, she got in an age-gap relationship with someone who reminded her of a father figure — I’m not going into the whole Lundy case but we can’t ignore how liberated she felt when Lundy an important and 20 years older officer was openly praising her.

Dexter as a big brother always felt protective of his baby sister. Because of typical family dynamics but even more with Harry expectations of what kind of person he should become. And with Harry’s death, Dexter knew he was the only person left in his sister life, the only one she could trust and be protected by.

So no, Dexter being the only man in Debra’s life who never left and who she didn’t shy away from doesn’t implicate she had romantic feelings for him. She had been struggling from so much trauma and the only one who was there for her during each events was her brother.

She knew how to open to him but he couldn’t. And it’s normal to feel weirded out when someone knows so much about you but they don’t reveal anything about themselves. It happens with friends too, when you start wondering if that person is going to use the information against you for example.

I will never forgive that therapist for doing one of the worst gaslighting I have ever seen on tv. I feel Debra and Dex’s bond was never the same again(mainly also because she found out of his double life but omg I hate her more than his killings)
