25/ I gibber hotly into the cooling dawn.

A few Heated Rivalry fic recs on the theme of parasocialism and media overinvestment ruining lives.

  • Halt and Catch Fire by mashawisotsky In March 2019, gambling syndicates dump data from 7,500 hacked athletes online—the biggest breach in sports history. Shane and Ilya's years of private texts are buried somewhere in three million leaked files. A story about privacy, professional hockey, and what happens when the internet finds what you thought was hidden.
  • Initial Response by mashawisotsky Nothing good happened on a Friday. Someone tried to rob Ilya Rozanov’s house. Shane Hollander didn’t know the man in the kitchen, but he knew how to keep moving. How to take a blow. By the time he hit the ice, the story was already out. Hockey, fear, loyalty, and the things you didn’t say all collided at full speed.
  • Gold Rush Fever by This_Witch_Writes After settling his relationship with Shane and meeting his parents, Ilya faces a his last season with Boston while the fall out from the Sochi doping scandals and Russian exclusion from the Winter Olympics is tangled with the NHL banning players from participating. Facing moving to a new country for the second time, Ilya struggles with his own identity as a queer Russian athlete while accidentally stumbling across gay hockey players dealing with their own crises.

And some meta on the more-than-only-personal consequences to being openly queer (in Russia in the 2010s).

i think my primary critique of heated rivalry, which don't get me wrong i have very much enjoyed watching, is that they try to have it both ways with the homophobia. we see almost none and almost no characters are, but also it's a primary motivator for the plot and a major factor in the characters' behavior and internal struggles. i think it does a disservice to the characters and quite frankly, the discussion of homophobia in hockey culture and society it is inherently a part of, to not portray homophobia as it is.

i get the reasoning behind it, but i think the end result isn't something idealistic or positive but rather just ignores the elephant in the room and quite painfully makes it so that the characters' fears seem disconnected from or irrational in proportion to reality. the gay characters are still unhappy because of it (like media with gay characters is often criticized for) but for a reason that within the show's narrative seems to exist only in their minds. people will say that means its existence is implied, but clearly it's not implied strongly enough because i'm seeing heated rivalry fans absolutely shocked to learn about the actual degree of homophobia in hockey irl.

it's all disappointing from a character building/narrative perspective but frankly insulting as fuck to the very real people who are literally experiencing the situation of being closeted in professional sports right now. to not honestly portray the way homophobia pervades every aspect of life, and sports to a more extreme and much more complicated degree, leaves the implication that the thing stopping athletes from coming out is their own fear rather than the very tangible consequence of people seeing and treating them differently.

#i agree that a lot of heated rivalry is based on internal struggle as shane is largely the perspective character#and most characters are not explicitly homophobic#yes the focus is on internalised homophobia and homophobia on the individual level rather than institutional or societal#but wider homophobia isn't the focus of the story being told at its current point#and i don't think that makes the queer characters' worries seem disproportional#as regards the main couple there are very few non-queer characters who actually know they're queer#by episode 6 regarding shane/ilya#4 definitely know and 1 is implied to know and 1 may have known but is dead#scott/kip is a side pair#kip is not closeted and his friends are queer or queer-coded and his dad is supportive#but scott has no close personal relationships outside of kip because he's used largely as a plot device#and there are depictions of heteronormativity and microaggressions with shane's teammates#and hints at the toxicity of stan culture#i do agree that it would have been nice to have ilya expand a little more on “because it's russia” as a reason for remaining closeted#in his discussions with shane#and for there to be some public reactions to scott's coming-out#but from what i've seen the confrontations with wider homophobia are likely to appear in season 2/3#when we get more scott/kip and the consequences of ilya and shane actually trying to have a relationship#as well as specifically the homophobia of hockey culture#but that may include spoilers that i'm unsure about you wanting

Like. We can ignore that when Jason came back from the dead he was literally just batsh*t crazy and a huge d!ck and blame it on. Like. Pit madness... I guess...

Or we can accept that tentatodd was something he did. For some reason. And that he dressed up as Nightwing and tried to kill multiple children and in general was insanely. Unstable...

And I'd still f*ck him anyways. Pit madness waters down the appeal, actually.

He blew up a school and beat a young teenage boy up? Bark bark, I'll make him a Daddy anyways. Bet.

Became a horrible monster and ate people? At least I know he knew how to use his mouth.

Also. Like. Most of that stuff he did to his family is just. Like. Casual sibling stuff. His Cain instincts bled through and all that.

Anyways.

thoughts on heated rivalry not really showing why the mtl vs bos of it all matters so much

i fear something that i am disappointed by with season one is that i think jacob tierney and co have not necessarily done a great job with is putting how much worse things are for them vs even other two hockey players who are fucking into context.

it's hard, i know, because this is a romance show before it is a hockey show but i think especially for american audiences, it would have been useful to show the depth of the habs vs bruins metros vs raiders of it all.

ilya and shane aren't two hockey players fucking who would cause a scandal because they're two hockey players fucking. they would cause a scandal because they're two hockey players, one from montreal and the other from boston who are fucking.

the rivalry is fucking insane. now i'm a montreal fan (the montreal canadiens aka the habs irl) so i've obviously got a mtl leaning approach on it, but even i can admit its been nasty going both ways. and it's been nasty since the actual literal inception of the league. montreal is the oldest team in the league and boston isn't far behind. they're the team who's played each other the most times in the history of the entire league.

every single fucking game they play is electric if not absolutely insanely chaotic. i gaurentee you that every time ilya and shane play each other there is at least 1 (one) fight and/or borderline problematic hit that will cause fans to debate if the player should be fined or suspended.

it is fucking nasty.

yes shane and ilya were made rivals because they are the top 2 players in the league and were drafted at the same time etc. etc. but the reason it remained so fucking big, so fucking vicious through everything, even more than a decade after they both came into the league is because the rivalry between montreal/boston will never die, therefore the rivalry between their best players never will.

that's why its so fucking insane and scary for shane that they'd be seen in public together. that's why despite ottawa being the same division as montreal, it was a safer bet for ilya to play there rather than montreal as they publicly tried to get friendlier

saw a post last night that was like “it’s ironic that shane is a neurotic little dork who just HAPPENS to play a violent masculine sport” and my head almost popped like a balloon. HES A JOCK!!! HES A FUCKING JOCK!!!!!!!!!! please i’m begging you shane hollander is a jock

ilya rozanov asks shane to be his boyfriend, attempt 1: bro I fucking love having sex with girls

ilya rozanov asks shane to be his boyfriend, attempt 2: might fuck around later and marry a woman lol. yeah i have one in mind. she's really hot :) her dad was a goalie :)

ilya rozanov asks shane to be his boyfriend, attempt 3: [to shane's parents] WE! ARE! LOVERS!

Coda:

ilya rosanov finally just tells shane that he is his boyfriend: i am your boyfriend. I think. probably. seems like it at this point, doesn't it.

What the Fuck Naruto Characters

Some Naruto characters are just crazy. It does not make sense. It can not make sense. Kishimoto did not try. There's something unexplainable wrong with them that clearly could not and can not be fixed:

  • Namikaze "i would rather die than be a single mum" Minato
  • Hatake "excuse me it's my UNemotional support rock" Kakashi
  • Uchiha "BLUE PILL BLUE PILL BLUE PILL BLUE PI" Obito
  • Nohara "have his eye doki doki have my heart doki do-" Rin
  • Uzumaki "treason is just how tsunderes play hard-to-get" Naruto
  • Haruno "the voice in my head told me to do it" Sakura
  • Sarutobi "leadership is fatherhood, so i must be a deadbeat dad to all my citizens" Hiruzen
  • Senju "nuclear proliferation will calm everything down" Hashirama
  • Senju "actually it's DR. Frankenstein, show some respect" Tobirama
  • Uchiha "brainwashing fixed me so it can fix you too" Itachi
  • Uchiha "it's not gay, i just want his face in my tits" Madara
  • Shimura "if i kill everyone then i can't lose the popular vote" Danzo
  • Uzumaki "if it's not my idea then it's a great idea" Nagato

Take note of who is not so What the Fuck. These are just normal, explainable crazy:

  • Uchiha Sasuke, who is as normal as a traumatised iconoclast gets in magic ninja land
  • The rest of the Rookie Nine
  • Jiraiya, who is a bad person with some competence and an amount of logical reasoning
  • Orochimaru, who is just a sociopathic enby who wants to live forever
  • Senju Tsunade, who is a fairly normal sledgehammer disguised as a human
  • Gaara, who grew up possessed but managed to emerge as buddha
  • Konan, who is somehow pretty emotionally healthy
  • Yamato/Tenzo, who went from child slave to the straightest man
  • Sai, who went from child slave to troll who fucks
  • Maito Gai, who had a dream to be a personal trainer and did the dream and there were no problems
  • The rest of Team Gai
  • Black Zetsu, who is just an alien plant with mummy issues
  • Uchiha Izuna, who is just a rage monster
  • All of the Bijuu
  • Yakushi Kabuto, who just has an identity disorder

I know it's a joke that Geto Suguru is anime Hitler, but the difference between the two is that Geto had a point. Even if it was a stupid point because he was in the middle of a psychotic break when he did all those murders, and then he had to double down because he is a person deeply obsessed with what is proper and moral. He actually reminds me of Light Yagami, which is a little funny since it's Gojo with the god complex. Together, Gojo and Geto make one whole Light Yagami, and what is that if not love?
