about

After 7 demo albums and 2 spotty maxi-singles AT LONG LAST the debut full-length studio LP from local teenage loser Odd Austin was wrought upon an unsuspecting world. God help us all.

I was recording at Ted Wilson's place every Saturday. We finished this over a few months, one $100 recording session at a time. My poor Grandmother, no doubt delirious from the stress of her numerous hip-hop street beefs, paid for most of these. I suppose the financing was helped along by the fact that I was still using karaoke tracks for the parodies. The originals however were fully produced in studio. Finally my aimless 15-year-old flailing for self-worth could be heard in lossless high-definition audio.

The majority of these are revamped and re-amped versions of stuff that appeared on the demos, But in the pursuit of timely humor (as should be the goal of all good Weird Al wannabes) there is some completely new material. Besides Atari (see the single for the sordid details), there was Batman, Old People, and Filler Song.

Patrick and I used to end our shows with a rendition of Filler Song where we would pretend to be improvising the song as we went along because we didn't plan a long enough set for the performance. A cute enough schtick for two nerdy sophomores, I suppose. It earned us a standing ovation and the honor of Best Original Song at our high school's Battle of the Bands, so that's sorta cool.

Despite my inimitably ironic idea to parody My Chemical Romance's "Teenagers" as "Old People", impossibly, someone else managed to come up with it too. That person happened to be Needlejuice Records co-founder Jace McLain. That's how we met. We had the same lame idea and an impossibly pathetic rivalry ensued. How very sad it all seems in retrospect. Luckily, we quickly realized that we had far more in common than we didn't and became pals. And thus, low-tier music history was made.
