Perverse fascinations. Quote-blogging what I'm reading over breakfast, with inquiry and commentary. 39-year old walking witch.

Two book pairings I have enjoyed recently:

Britney Spears, The Woman in Me, followed by the chapter on Hysterical (Histrionic) Psychologies in Nancy McWilliams's classic Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process, 2nd edition.

Two wildly different takes on consent, both life-changing: Betty Martin will teach you how to feel consent in your body with The Art of Receiving and Giving: The Wheel of Consent and Avgi Saketopoulou will fuck up all that you didn't want to know about consent with Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk, Race, Traumatophilia.

I will be quote-blogging these for my own pleasure, edification and future reference, and maybe yours as well!

For my thoughts on these and other subjects, look at the #mywriting tag.

its so scary to put yourself out there but a SINGLE message saying "hi i loved what you made it touched me in some way" makes it all worth it 10000%

daily reminder that if you like something someone made tell! them! tell them tell them tell them TELL THEM

I believe each era gets the drugs it needs to dissociate from the current horrors. Not much could stand up to the most sadistic thugs overturning the rule of law and indiscriminately beating and murdering people throughout the United States, except. Except. Except the pure homosexual cocaine that is heated rivals.

Personality characteristics are rooted in earlier memories that have left the client in "child" perspectives and affect states. Therefore, many dysfunctional characteristics are ego-syntonic to the client who lacks the appropriate adult development and perspective.… Although positive affects and behaviors automatically arise subsequent to memory processing, to optimize effects, processing should include the introduction of new, positive social and relationship behaviors. Therefore, any shortcoming of education and experience should be assessed for future remediation.

Francine Shapiro, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

I resisted EMDR for a decade. Now I am studying it and learning that the gossip and preconceived notions I had about it were wrong!

I still have many questions about how it is practiced. Francine actually sounds like a big supporter of more normal weekly psychotherapy, as a place to learn the kind of self-soothing and positive relationship skills needed to do EMDR.

Jimmy brought me in as an overpaid garde-manger man—120 smacks a night to plate salads and squirt whipped cream on desserts. But Jimmy was not, at that time, an organizational mastermind. I am. Jimmy spent much of his time roller-blading around the city, schmoozing; he had a second job, cooking for Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola; he was secretly working out a deal for his triumphant return to the Hamptons; and of course he was poking everything in a skirt.

I genuinely believe that the big thing that ruined geek culture, was that it suddenly had to become load-bearing for all of the other third-spaces and subculture spaces that no longer had meeting space.

Conventions and game stores were suddenly flooded with marginally-geeky people (especially sensitive young women) who previously were in other kinds of activities. I was in a lot of those same other types of activities and had to return to geek culture for a while because there was just nowhere left to go! There was a big public/non profit based arts culture in the 2000s-2010s that still existed in suburban and small city environments, such as one community arts thing I volunteered with that had been around since the 90s and then closed up shop in about 2015.

I didn't really notice the lack of culture between 2010-2014 that much because I had gone back to school, but when I was out of school, everywhere felt like a borderline ghost town.

There was already very little for adults to do past a certain point and then the pandemic finished killing it all. There isn't even the Small Business Development Center here anymore because they got rid of all of their workshops and in-person groups.

“The impression one has, at first, is that there is no conversation. We do not talk — we bludgeon one another with facts and theories gleaned from cursory readings of newspapers, magazines, and digests. Talk is personal and if of any value must be creative.”

— Henry Miller, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare
