There’s a character who’s a bully but later you find out they’re actually being abused by their family. Your sympathy for them will immediately grow. But if you introduce this character as someone who’s abused by their family, and later reveals that they’ve been bullying people, you will be the very least shocked and your sympathy for them might go down or even disappear. Even though ultimately they do the same things and go through the same character arc
This is why tsunderes have it figured out. If you let your good or tragic parts be the unexpected part of you, people will memorize your goodness more. But if you show yourself as a good person first and let your bad parts be the unexpected “hidden” parts of you people will remember that more clearly as well
