I love that the modern-day tumblr post equivalent of chain emails only requires me to reblog a relatively pleasant image instead of forward an email to a bunch of my friends and family members to quell my raging anxiety.
So, sometimes in fiction you'll come across a friendship dynamic something along the lines of Brilliant Protagonist x Loyal Companion, often in the same vein as Holmes and Watson.
And sometimes you'll have an interaction with a rival or villain that goes along the lines of (to borrow from the 2009 SH film as an example)
"Sherlock Holmes... and his loyal dog."
And I LOVE that, i love everything about it, but I would also give a lot to have THIS be the followup,
The Loyal Companion says, utterly seriously and with a stoic face, "Woof." And the Brilliant Protagonist laughs or smiles and says, "Down boy." and continues with the scene.
What attracts me so hard to this idea is that the loyal companion knows his place in the world, knows exactly what he is to the Brilliant Protagonist, and actively chooses that role. The mocking insult is met with the "Woof" response, which implicitly states
"I can think of no higher honor than to be this person's devoted guardian and companion."
And that sincere and open devotion makes me Feral.
