I Loathe a Parade

Damn when she got up cause she saw the little black girl waving at her I almost cried 😪💞💗

Okay this one hit me in my soul.

Alright, so in HS for my creative writing course I wrote and illustrated a children’s book and read it for our local kindergarten class. I made the main character a Black girl who was a magician and her name was a typically sounding Black name. The story was about her and her fantasy friends winning a race and the story was about the importance of communication. Ya know typical kiddie book stuff.

When I went to the class to read it. There was only one little Black girl in this class. A position I was in all my life as well, being the only Black girl in the room.

And when I read the story she LIT UP! At the end, I had them review me and draw their favorite character and ask me questions. She glued to my side and talked about how cool it was that the magician character.

“She is brown like me. Her name is big like mines. We never do story time and her name is big like mines!” And I still have her cute little stick figure rendition of my character and everytime I think me wanting to be an author one day is silly. I think of her.

This is the exact reason I want to become an animator and make more things for black kids
